Design failures (and successes) of the PT
Time

I meant all non-human beings, aliens I guess would be a better term.
But even so the Banthas look like real creatures in a way that The Parrotizard didn’t.
Despite the wonky matte lines the Rancor looks more physically real than any of the AOTC arena creatures.
The burping frog thing in ROTJ looks more real than the farting camel thing in TPM.

Design failures (and successes) of the PT
Time

The technology is almost entirely perfectly designed. Some of the costumes are a bit odd but PT fails in two departments design wise.

 1. Creatures, they look too cartoonish and being rendered as CGI does make the the world seem less physically real than even the plastic fantastic of ROTJ.
 2. It doesn’t show the old used world of the OT as new and early new aging. We should have seen the precursors to R2 and Threepio as used and beat up and Artoo and Threepio as brand new. The X-Wings, Y-Wings etc should sparkle with gleaming panels and be the cutting edge of their day to be passed down and be the stripped down rusty hotrods of tomorrow. Padme’s world defended by gleaming chrome plated Y-wings would have sold the transition better. As for Vader’s first mask forget it. Also those spindly looking battle-droids look too sophisticated to be mass produced before Threepio. They should have been chunky IG-88 types so when we see one in ESB being used by bounty hunters we get a sense of them being the past that would be replaced.

Episode II has the best story of the prequels. Discuss.
Time

The idea of both sides of a war being worked by the same player is quite sophisticated for this sort of movie (though that’s really the basic story of the PT as a whole). It’s the bit of the trilogy where we see it most though.
All the plot notes could have worked but the script is a mess, the direction is dull, the performances are terrible, the effects are inconsistent, the mystery aspect makes as little sense as Luke’s rescue plans in ROTJ.
Also it makes more sense if Padme is chasing awkward chaste Anakin. The other way around just comes across as being really creepy especially after Anakin confesses to a brutal massacre including children FFS.

My point is that she isn’t some posh princess when we meet her in ANH.

And that is where we disagree.

No that’s where you are just plain wrong. She is a Senator who is captured in an act of espionage and is a leader in military resistance to the Empire. She can resist Vader’s powers and standard Imperial interrogation techniques and is really handy with a gun. So not just some posh Princess. She isn’t even that posh when she is talking to Han and Luke.

My suggestion for you would be to look through the various idea threads and find ideas you think are interesting and doable try them and compile a compendium of options that people can just pull out of your archives and edit with.

Some of the ideas threads are :
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-legendary-Starkiller-Ranch-Thread/id/3886
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-ANH-SE-Redux-Ideas-thread-Radical-Ideas-Welcome/id/10131
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/ESB-and-ROTJ-Wishlist/id/8826
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Prequel-Radical-Redux-Ideas-Thread/id/9911

At the moment most edits are reshuffling of currently existing material but if editors had an album of pre-rendered augmented shots that they could just drop in. It would really add to the diversity and interest of edits.
One little project that might interest you would be to finish some of the barely finished deleted scenes from ROTS. Some are more complete like the escape in the fuel tanks but some of them are little more than animatics with a bit of live action.

What if TFA is awful?
Time

Bad news everybody. I dropped a test tube downstairs and accidentally opened a portal to OT2 (the forum in the universe where the PT was a solid improvement over the first two crappy movies and Revenge of the Jedi is the best of the original films) and Earth2 Bingo still isn’t pumped for TFA
I look really weird without a beard BTW nice bewbz though.

I’m really not getting my little head around markdown.
I had a couple of images up and running and looking fine only to have them pop off after a few days (presumably de-cached).
I’m grateful for the site. I’m not going to stop using it or any such nonsense I’m not trying to be rude or mean-spirited but I loved the look and feel of posting images on the old style. I loved being able to set the image dimensions easily and I can’t do my fake quotes in the old style either so even I don’t get my old jokes anymore 😄
Quite a few previously posted images haven’t made the transition I notice despite still being actively hosted and we have some rather large signature images now the prior image sizing is gone boing.
How can I write sigh in asterisks without going bold and italic? 😄

Episode IV: A Ridiculous Hope
Time

You could probably cut in Cylons from the New Caprica episodes into Mos Eisley and replace the smackdown robot for one.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the original series had someone say “Cylons” with a older English accent so the place could become “a wretched hive of Cylons and Villainy”.
When the Stormtroopers start firing on the Falcon some old school Cylons could show up and fire on them.

It is funny the number of ideas here and in other Lucasfilm products that resemble ideas voiced in fanedit threads.
I suppose if enough people think about the same things long enough the same or noticeably similar ideas will manifest.
Part of me kind of hopes we have a few Lucasfilm lurkers and contributors here, it would be really cool.

Redoing each and every laser bolt in any Star Wars movie is proof of potential effort. It isn’t however proof of value.

It would be along the lines of effort of changing all the Fremen eyes in an extended cut of Dune (what with Anakin and Padme not being in every shot together) and that has been done a couple of times I think.

The old and long gone forum search facility never really worked well but I was always able to find something using browser search engines.
This doesn’t seem to be a doable with image searches since the results seem to link to the asset allocation on the old location.
It might be something that settles over time but is this current set up more friendly to an idea like a forum search engine?

Idea & Info Wanted: Introduction and edit idea
Time

Leia has already tried that.
The plans came from one group of rebels were transferred to her ship under the cover of diplomatic immunity and her crew paid the price and the plans were almost lost forever.
She has just seen the now complete station in action, destroying her home planet.
It makes sense she would run to the nearest practical help even if it is just to warn them to evacuate, luckily they find the weakness Tagge and Vader foresee.

Another idea for a change that might sound odd to start with but bear with me.
It would take a lot of work and the effect may seem superficial but I noticed that monochrome edits of the prequels work better for me. I was trying think this out and I remembered how in ROTJ:SE they changed Seb Shaw’s eye colour and removed his eyebrows to make him seem more like Hayden.
What I’m proposing is the opposite.
What if Hayden (Jake too) and Nat swapped their hair and eye colours.
That way Luke would look more like Vader’s wife and he would be able to more clearly make that match between her in pain and his son in pain (this might be compounded if he only used Force Lightning once on Padme, instead of choking her which only really made sense to me as an expression of Vader’s inability to breath unaided after the following battle).
Anakin under Vader’s mask would look more like Anakin in the PT without having to change the OT as much.
We would subconsciously see Leia as being more at risk of succumbing to the Dark Side because she was dark haired like her father, rather than being the same sort of diplomat that her mother was.
In the current films we’re are meant to make that connection between Luke and Anakin but the defining moment of Luke’s journey is snapping at his father and almost becoming him but pulling back.
That is sold to us by Leia being in jeopardy from her own parent so making her parent more like her than Luke is the sort of visual storytelling that the OT did well but the PT did terribly.
Still a lot of work for something probably only I can see but I’d be interested in hearing what other people think of this.
It might not even be something that can be done convincingly.

Star Wars Episode II: The Approaching Storm (Released)
Time

I’ve never had a problem with the unusual to most of us method of electing female children to be monarchs.
Plenty of cultures around the world have child rulers and elected monarchs so combining the two just informs us of how diverse the Republic was.
My problem is the flat delivery, the ‘tell don’t show’ writing and bland direction of the scenes in the PT.
Only so much of that can be fixed by editing alone.
