No need to say that.  I, for one, always welcome a good discussion.  I mean, this is a forum.  That's what we're supposed to do, right?

Don't get me wrong I love a good natter especially along these lines but this thread is about the Jabba plan as it currently stands, suggestions about how to change it in a fanedit (and other aspects of ROTJ) are for the ESB/ROTJ Wishlist thread.

And if you want chew the cud about these and other possible tinkerings please pop on over there, it's a lot of fun and creative too.

I just wanted to thank you for putting the video up here so I could add the points you raised there.

The depths of problems like this are beyond fixing via editing. This is reconceptualize and rewrite level stuff. The problem with this whole fanedit craze is we decide that everything wrong with a twenty year old film can and should be fixed, and the end result is a hacked up film. Just take a look at all the ROTJ fanedits who tried to "fix" the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi by removing them...

Sometimes good enough ought to just be left alone. Fanedits work when you take something crappy in hopes of making it into something bearable (though this begs the question: what is the point?). But fanedits of decent or good movies is something hard for me to get my head around.

There are a lot of creative approaches to the Ewoks than just cutting them out (giving them more realistic facial movements, fleshing out their culture making them more like real alien people than cuddly teddy bears who take down the Empire without prior experience etc).

My personal bag with them is that they never feel real enough to believe in.

The idea of a shorter than average tribal community fighting along side the Rebels being the deciding factor in a ground battle is perfect (it shows that the Empire like it's leader underestimates the power of individuals and over estimates the power of it's technology).

The execution currently doesn't work but that possibly is fixable.

It's certainly worthy of discussion.

But I conceed not on this thread so I'll scuttle back from my little vacation away from the topic.

Perhaps add the Dubai skyline? It's getting wackier by the day! Heh. (some of the buildings are quite nice and interesting, though)

I wasn't suggesting going that far ;-)

I meant something more along the lines of (but as always better than) but I take what Ady says about matching the scenes up as said:

Bespin Tarted up

For this mock-up I pinched from these two buildings and added more windows from the shot as it stands.

As always a dramatic improvement.

Removing the roof cage makes all the sense in the world but (switching on rod for your back mode) these buildings still look rather fake:

Bespin Towers

They might be improved a little by borrowing some detail inspiration from modern Arabic buildings like these (Bespin architects really don't like windows much which is weird seeing how nice the view is) :

Mosque 1

Well, I just can't ever let this thread die, can I?!  But I have a good reason for resurrecting it again.  I actually just finished editing together a video version of my original argument!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlx2ItNLeFM

It's a bit premature for me to be posting this since it hasn't processed yet as of this writing, but I'm just too excited to wait.

Ooh, wait!  It's ready!

Thanks for posting that link, I've posted it on the ESB/ROTJ Wishlist thread because some of the points he brings up might be fixable in a re-edit project and it would be great to hear any suggestions in that direction over there.

Other DVD suppliers are available (possibly some that don't charge such silly prices).

Sadly the other seven series have been blocked from release for a variety of reasons, some beyond the BBC's control.

As for Max Headroom :

right on the tick Shanerjedi, those where among the original ideas Lucas had, amomng the Death Star being Bespin instead of a moon-shapped station, Vader having a throne surrounded by fire, coruscant filled with piramids, wookies intead of ewoks (I would have gone with that one!), and the like.....the untold riches in the star wars that never was, hehe.

The Cloud City design was based on an Imperial prison design for ANH but the Death Star was always a metal moon.

I've been thinking about that youtube critique of Luke's plan to rescue Solo.

What if it's not exactly Luke's Plan.

Lando, (as the guy says) make's sense, he's the man on the inside, checking out the layout of the palace and to serve as backup if Leia doesn't succeed.

Chewie is a means to getting Leia into the palace by giving her disguise some validity.

So far this looks more like Leia's plan (something that Chewie and Lando would feel duty bound to go along with).

Artoo and Threepio seem to have wandered in from an entirely different plan (they carry Luke's message and Luke's hidden weapon).

What if Luke told Lando to use his charm and connections to check the place out and told the others to wait for him but when he turns up on Tatooine he finds his sister has the family trait of lack of patience when emotional attachment is involved.

Luke senses this while in Ben's Hut and has to figure out a rescue plan for the rescue plan.

I haven't a clue how to get this up on screen yet but I thought I'd just throw it out there in the hope that it would get the ball rolling.

Also I've never been convinced that Luke would fall for the old trap door routine, he isn't the farmboy of ANH anymore he's a Jedi Knight who managed to get away from being cornered by Vader so I just can't see him standing on the right spot to fall into a trap like that.

Dropping Oola down the trapdoor would be a good set up for twisting the expectations of the audience around.

It might be more fun if Luke avoided the trapdoor entirely (especially if it backfired on Jabba) but found some other way of getting into the Rancor Pit (perhaps while trying to get to the cells to free Han and Chewie).

Any other ideas and how to pull them off?

Are you referring to Dune? Still haven't watched/read it. :p

Yes I was and this weekend I managed to get a friend of mine to watch Blade Runner for the first time so who knows maybe you will enjoy that universe too (though I'd recommend it more as a read than a watch but I like the film and television versions too).

I just to point out we are not "Adywan's yes-men" contrary to some beliefs I think this is an open conversation about things that could be improved, when they are it's obvious to be happy about it. I bring this up because of some perceptions floating in the air of other threads. Carry on

Sometimes Ady does change his mind when faced with an arguement he sees as valid but ultimately it is his edit so when it's made perfectly clear he isn't going to do something it doesn't make sense to keep going on about it here when those ideas could be put elsewhere for other editors to pick up.

At the moment the ESB/ROTJ Wishlist thread is a good place for ideas Ady has clearly stated he isn't running with in this edit but other people might.

There are no yes or no men or women here (other than Ady himself who has to do the work on this project), we are all perhaps and maybe people.

^Yes, interesting idea. Perhaps a little too 20th century, though. (thinking about the fact that he wears a sealed helmet, after all, so it may be a bit superfluous)

Frank Herbert was sticking things up peoples noses in the year 10,981 so I can't see a problem with it a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

The inside of Vader's helmet already looks rather uncomfortable so sitting an icky tube up his nose could add to that besides it might not just be a breathing tube, it might give him bionic smell.

I thought I'd post this video here (thanks Gaffer Tape) to promote a bit of discussion about how to add a bit more logic into the Jabba rescue.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlx2ItNLeFM

There are some very valid points here which might be ironed out through discussion.

The ones I'm trying to find are mostly British.

BBC's The Changes (1973): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Changes_(TV_series)

The Devil's Crown (1978): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Devil's_Crown

The Shadow Of The Tower (1972) : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadow_of_the_Tower

All of which have been repeated requested to get a DVD release (none have ever been released on VHS and only The Changes was ever repeated, once on BBC years ago and once on UK Gold).

The Shadow Of The Tower is particuarly erksome as it forms a prequel to the award winning The Six Wives Of Henry VIII and Elizabeth R.

The Tudors (full of historical inaccuracies and tedious performances gets a full DVD release but those series covered the period so much better and with much greater accuracy).

How about a closer feel to OT with removing many of the "revealing" elements of PT and dirty up a bit the cockpits?

See the comparison.

I took obvious pieces from x-wing, and zoomed the camera to match with the OT.

I see that now looks less Star wars-y ( more like an other scifi movie). I could add a black screen instead but i think is good to keep a balance between the two sagas.

It might be nice to actually see the sun in this shot going by the amount of light it hasn't sunk yet.

Thats too green matey..

I like the idea of the sun, still the clouds should follow the proper light source.

It's a problem I have with this Skydrive thing I'm currently using.

I get something looking perfectly fine on Photoshop (where it looked in this case peach at the top and inky blue at the bottom)and when I upload it looks nothing like what I originally worked on.

So I have to go back and compensate for the the way it looks when it finally loads up.

I have no idea what setting of an alien sun on an alien planet looks like but I've seen some pretty strange and exciting ones here and light scattering can do some pretty weird stuff to cloud highlights.

I think the general rule should be if you like it go with it and let what ever Gods you follow figure out how it works.

Liking it or not however is a subjective thing.
