I enjoy Dagobah in the OT just fine, I was just trying to make a point and yes there are humans in Star Wars but not from Earth so you could argue the inclusion of snakes and lizards but to me its pulls me out of the movie. Why not add giraffees and elephants too?

I enjoy edits of movies I have very little issue with. Like extended editions of the prequel trilogy and the extended edition of the first Terminator.

I dont like the idea of making Dooku not a sith, its a bad idea.

The saber colors have no deep mystical meaning. Sith use artificial crystals which make the blade color red. end of story no deep philiosphical meaning behind blade color. And if a blade color is changed than it creates a continuity problem with all of the EU and the Clone Wars.

The explanation as to why the colours are that way is in the EU realm as are the continuity issues any changes like these make (unless they impact on the OT and there are threads for that too).

To some fans I can understand that would be important but to others it's not.

I love some of the EU (just as I love spin off stories in my other Sci-Fi and fantasy worlds like Doctor Who) and it would be interesting to see something radically different which still manages to ring true to the many novels, comics, games and the various animated series (though it would be much, much harder).

If you want to reconcile these edit flavours to the EU stick them in the Infinities folder (anything can go on there) there have also been many of the Star Wars Tales strips that play fast and loose with official canon.

This thread is specifically about edit ideas that go beyond extended cuts and tinkering around the edges so if that's not your bag on principle it doesn't make much sense complaining about it and possibly putting someone off posting an idea that other people might find useful or entertaining.

They do on my planet, I like the extended pod race for the actual race footage but I hate the wonky cartoon racers in the pods and the two headed announcer guy in any version they appear in. The extra Tusken/Jawa stuff is fine by me though.

The Dagobah set with it's huge tree roots and the unearthly mists was very fantasy inspired and I've never had a problem with the reptiles and lizards, Star Wars has human beings in it after all.

As for sabre colours it's a matter of personal taste.

Some people see varying degrees of symbolism in the colours (something Lucas started by giving red blades to only the bad guys).

It's in the nature of this thread to discuss these changes to a degree but only if the rationale behind the colour change radically impacts on the story.

Changing Dooku from a Sith Lord to a Jedi who no longer trusts the Senate or the Council is a story shift that can be underlined by a sabre colour change for example.

This thread is about making changes so if you are happy with the films as they are don't get upset by the contents of this thread (the original versions still exist and sit on your DVD shelf).

Any tips for getting near to isolating the dialogue elements from a film soundmix?
Time

I'm trying the impossible (I know what Yoda would say to that).

I know that there is no scoreless and sound effect free isolated dialogue tracks for the Star Wars films (other than what's sitting in the Lucasfilm vaults).

But I am attempting to edit the audio of a scene as close to scoreless and effects free as possible and I would really welcome any tips as it is a labour of Heracles.

I'm trying to construct a rough cut of the council scene from TPM with a mixture of dialogue from other scenes.

My first attempts flow quite well (for rough cuts).

I've attempted to strip away some of the intrusive elements via a mixture Audacity and Garage band filters but the results sound a bit like a telephone call down a long tube and even then I still get the odd blob of persistant LSO complaining in the background.

Help OT.COM boffins, you're my only hope.

Does VLC media player play in HD?
Time

I managed to get Ady's ANH AVCHD to play on Vlc through linux but it was a complicated procedure on a biggish tower and was still a bit choppy because of an issue with the linux version of Vlc which is being fixed (or so they say) so it should work well with other formats if you can get into stream folder (it's not really a job you can do on a laptop, you need quite a fast graphics card for it to cope with all that information rushing through the player at once). It was a head scratching afternoon, which the better half did most of the hard work on (but I made the tea).

Vlc doesn't have a frame by frame step option on any of the versions I've got access to.

What I do is to run the file as slowly as possible and be quick fingered on the mouse button to push pause where necessary it's a bit frustrating at times but it's a small price to pay (in terms of patience) for a player that does almost anything for no money at all.

The digital interence you posted screen captures of look rather like the player is trying to process the file while something else (or the file size) is slowing it down.

So if the file is huge and your playing it on a slow computer or you have process hungry programs running in the background you might get problems like that.

It might also be caused by the player trying to error correct a damaged file.

Haven't a clue about the error message.

It's possible that you were attempting to run the film from a folder with a readme file inside but on all the versions I've got it will ignore any file format that isn't something it can play (that might be down to the settings I have for error alerts).

Sorry about hijacking your thread, I'll move along now, thanks for creating it by the way, this thread has really helped motivate my edit.

It wasn't really a hijack, (cripes I've needed to be reminded to stay on topic on this thread too...and in other places) and I hope you keep posting and respond to the ideas here.

It's great that you have found it useful (which is down to everyone who contributes to it).

You do seem to be well on the way to making a distinct project so it just seemed to make more sense for posts about it to be in a thread dedicated to what you plan to do with that unique direction rather than posting those plans to a thread which deals with ideas in a more general sense.

This is really an ideas thread (with a bit of wiggle room for off topic buffoonery) so if you have a project well and truly on the cards it may make sense to make your own thread to promote it and ask for input.

Some editors have posted ideas from their projects which other people have found useful sounding boards (like JasonN talking about what he did with Dooku) and that's fine because it promotes discussion and people developing their own takes on the idea.

But it would be more in line with the aims of this thread to see a few less posts of a, "I'm doing this in my project" flavour and more of a "What do you think about?" or "I think it would be a good idea if...." nature.

Seb Shaw doesn't look that much different from a middle aged Hayden now that the eye colour has changed, (the only aspect of the make-up that does need a fix is the top of the head which is obviously built up and looks a little silly).

I wasn't suggesting reshooting all of Hayden's scenes (as much as I would love to) but replacing his voice which is a difficult task but if it could be pulled off would fix so much of what is wrong about the prequels (namely Hayden's often lamentably bad performance).

Hell, if I could I'd do the same for Lloyd too.

A good actor can give even the wonkiest script the necessary gravitas to propel a story (great actors like Derek Jacobi could turn the phone book into an emotional roller coaster ride).

The irony is that the much touted (and I'm not sure how apocryphal the story is) first choice of Leonardo DiCaprio looks more like a half way between Shaw and Lloyd than Hayden does and the must have been no shortage of DiCaprio lookalike, unknown actors with talent who could have done the job better.  Why they went for that plank is beyond me (not that I'm convinced that DiCaprio would have done much better either with Lucas pulling the strings and if the reports of DiCaprio turning the script down are true good on him, I'm not a big fan of his work but the script for AOTC reads like bad fan fiction). I suspect they only picked Lloyd because he had a DiCaprio shaped head, something Hayden clearly does not (going by the screen tests for TPM Lloyd was not the best actor of the bunch).

Though that is really an object of discussion for another place.

If Shaw stays (my prefered choice), his ghost should stay too, middle aged Anakin is the only father Luke can relate to and the only one he would want to see.

I can understand changing his clothes to match those he wore in pre-Sith life but the head swap is a bizarre choice aimed largely at people too stupid to follow the story and work out that the old guy in the suit is the same character as the younger guy in the same suit three films back.

If droids are programmed to obey, why do they need 'restraining bolts'?

Presumably because some droids (like R2 in ANH) are prone to follow the commands of who they are programmed to believe their master to be over that of their current owner.

It must be a rare but significant problem with second hand or stolen droids.

If Dooku had ordered them to try their best to kill Grevious they would do that politely too (just as the Clones do when ordered to kill their former Generals).

Neither army is evil as such as they lack free will.

The sequel saga (which George says will never happen) should have dealt with this issue.

Obi-Wan does postulate the interesting notion of, "Well, if droids could think, none of us would be here".

The saga has two droids as main characters who constantly use their own initiative, it's not a huge leap to imagine a nuGalactica style droid/clone epiphanic revolt.

Though this thread isn't really the place for talking about such things as none of this has much of a bearing on ROTJ or ESB (other than altering the stupid comedy droid torture scene).

ahem* i would like to point u out to the novels and read them. u will find that a clone is more of an individual then is shown in the movies. they don't lack free will. one of them had  sex with a jedi and had a little mando/jedi baby. i needn't go anyfurther

Seeing as none of the books are part of the film series, no you needn't go any further.

In the films as they stand the droids and clones are slaves created and programmed and no more responsible for what they do than my toaster (though the moments where R2 and Threepio seem to stretch beyond the limitations of blindly following orders as given are very interesting and something which flies in the face of George's claim that there is no more story to tell....on screen).

Seeing as this is a ROTJ and ESB thread it's the last I shall say on the subject here.

Unsure if this has been covered or not. If it has been, I apologise. I've skimmed through this thread as much as my patience will allow.

This isn't a suggestion but more an observation (as not only would it be impossible for anyone but lucasfilm to do, but few fans would desire the change) but it always seemed odd to me that Lucasfilm would change Anakin's ghost at the end of Return of the Jedi, yet keep Vader unmasked the same. Now I understand that he's aged, but still - it is obvious to anyone that this is not an aging Hayden Christensen.

I would have expected lucas to have changed unmasked vader to something along the lines of this publicity pic (only aged more with makeup):

This would have at least added continuity, whether it outraged the fans or not.

EDIT: I have no idea why the image has formatted itself to the right.

It would be easy to blurt out something like, "Don't give George any more ideas" but you do make a very valid point.

While I think Seb Shaw looks fine as he is now that his eye colour is changed and the bushy eyebrows are gone, I am surprised that George didn't go all the way and remove him from the DVD version altogether.

Perhaps he thought that a quick cut and paste of Hayden's head on his ghost was enough.

It's a bit hard to explain how the former jerk over the years developed a clear RP English accent for example.

My personal solution to this problem would be to re-dub all of Anakin's PT dialogue with a good RP English voice actor rather than the much easier reverse solution. Bogged down as I currently am with altering dialogue with the music and sound effects getting in the way, that may prove to be too hard a task without the source materials (which George has presumably).

How would you have done ROTJ?
Time

One way around the Vader being the father of Luke but also the murderer of Anakin would be to seperate the two characters.

Obi-wan had a friend called Anakin and a former pupil called Vader.

If Anakin killed Vader and took over his persona you could have both ideas reconciled.

Obi-Wan could have been lead to believe that his friend was killed by Vader when in fact his former pupil was killed by his friend.

It would make ROTJ a bit more complicated but it could have saved the prequels especially if Vader was already wearing a mask before Anakin killed him.

The volcanic confrontation between Vader and Obi-Wan in the prequels would still have the preserved surprise for people watching the series from 1 to 6.

Yoda is shown beginning to tune into the Qui-Gon Force frequency in ATOC (or is it the other way around?)

Qui-Gon does find and put his foot down about Anakin (and we all know how he turned out).

So while it doesn't completely fix the problem (only a trip in the TARDIS armed with a cricket bat could do that) it does ease the problem a bit if the Jedi ability to sense what the dark side is up to is clouded and they assume that one of their own made the necessary preparations.

They are stuck in a difficult place.

The Senate have rushed through a motion legitimising the creation of an army that already exists to counter a threat that already exists.

In a sense the clones are outside their control anyway.

It would be also help the situation if somehow a call for continued investigation and assessment of the army was made. Yoda seems to be the most sceptical while Mace and Obi-wan seem to see the army as a gift from the Force (they should have checked out the horse shaped parcel before pulling it into the city first however, such are the many perils of the postal system).

The easiest thing to do with Sydo-Dyas/Syfo-Dyas is to (with a bit of tinkering) make him into Qui-Gon (or at least the references to him).

So when the Geonosians claim to be working for a Jedi who died 10 years before it fits with what we already know.

In reality it could be Sidious using Qui-Gon's good name to get up to some nasty work behind the scenes which would leave the Jedi scratching there heads.

Was Qui-Gon going rogue like his former master?

Did he know what his former master was up to and prepare for the coming storm?

Is Dooku the Sith Master and Qui-Gon was trying to counter his moves from behind the scenes because he knew how far up the conspiracy went?

With all this talk of changing the fighter craft and the like it might be useful to look at some of the strange aircraft designs of yesteryear (as any attempt to do this would need new models).

Here is a nice web site with some very bizarre and often Star Warsian looking real life aircraft.

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now
Time

Having a bit of a problem here chaps and chapettes.

I downloaded the iso hoping just to take screen captures to build a higher Rez version of the PS mosaic of the interior of Ben's Hut I made for doing mockups (still and later video) of the Ben's ghost at his old house idea I posted over on the ESB/ROTJ thread.

Like this one which I made with the DVD version of ANH (only hopefully better when armed with something of higher definition) :

Empty Hut

I can't find anything that can open the iso image in linux at all, even with the select team of the better half armed with several cups of tea (+++UPDATE Isobuster seems to be able to see the contents I'll post what happens just incase anyone else is in the same desert skiff+++).

If any kind soul out there armed with the HD version could PM me with enough screen captures to do the necessary I would greatly appreciate it.

The above image has worked out fine for small mockups but if I were to move into something a bit more ambitious the extra detail from a HD image could make all the difference.

+++BREAKING NEWS+++ The tea worked it now plays in VLC like a dream and the picture is top notch. So assistance is no longer required, Now I have to get down to doing the hard work again+++

When I was a kid I used to think it was a good joke to have this scary looking mysterious character turn up but when he finally speaks he sounds like mouse breaking wind, now it's like a warning of the sort of flight of fancy that would become Jar-Jar and the battledroids.

I suppose he was born out of the same background as Boba Fett (that Vader was at one point going to be a bounty hunter hired to track down the Rebels).

He looks a bit like some early drawings of what finally became Vader.

The most godawful sequel?
Time

I was forced by a great friend of mine to sit through all the Austin Powers films.

I've never found Mike Myers funny but I found them all awful movies as revenge I made him sit through the spoof Casino Royale and What's New Pussycat? and he later agreed that they did everything those films set out to do but a million times better.

I could have dug out the Doctor Goldfoot films too but the point was made.
