Now that Ady has announced that Lando will not die in ROTJ:R could all talk of him being killed off be moved to here because the SAVE LANDO!! thread no longer has a purpose.

This isn't an exclusively Adywan thread so like all those ESB ideas that will not be in ESB:R it still has a home here for those who want to see it done (like me).

Any tips for getting near to isolating the dialogue elements from a film soundmix?
Time

As I posted on the other thread I've had limited success by going back and working on it from a word to word basis (which is very very time consuming).

There will be instances where it may be necessary to go further and break into longer words and strip the sounds at either end and then apply a gate to the remaining sound componants and then reassemble them (and even then it will not be perfection).

If we has a team of people with no friends and no social life who could do this for each character we might get a workable dialogue bank by 2017, it really is a labour intensive job with no quick fix solution that I can see (other than breaking into Fort Skywalker and liberating the data tapes).

Are there any key scenes you need attempting?

would they have things with legs walking around a dense forest of trees?  Really?

It's like people say 'why don't they just fly above the trees?' in the speeder bike scene. Doesn't always make sense. Wouldn't be nearly exciting otherwise. In the case of the walkers, I would think the AT-AT would do better than the AT-ST, but still a tad cramped in the middle of a forest. :p

Is it really an issue in a universe with lightsabres?

The AT-ATs could clear a path through a forest in a rather short space of time, especially if they had TIE Bombers burning the trees out of the way too (or if they were fitted with foot blades as I suggested a few pages back).

If you think about it the AT-AT isn't a very practical war machine in any environment (even ice-fields) it's more a techno-fantasy element than a Science Fiction one (though it would scare the crap out of me to see a number of those things crashing towards my house).

I've started on my own Attack Of The Clones edit. I'm still getting the hang of coordinating my visual cuts with the background music. I've split the ac3 into 6 wav files as per adigitalman's editing guide. I'm just wondering, how do the other editers here get around the problem of the voice channel also having music in it (which after cuts doesn't always sync up with the audio in the other channels).

I think I'm going to redo the music in the other 5 channels anyway. I'm just wondering if anyone knows off the top of their heads the best way to minimize the music in the voice track (I'm assuming it's impossible to remove it entirely)

Edit: Sorry. Just realised I should have posted this in the how to section, and also have just found Bingowings' thread asking exactly this.

I've had a limited amount of success by taking a word by word appoach but boy is it hard work (and time consuming).

The only way I can imagine doing it would be to start an order of Star Wars nerd audio monks who sit in their cells isolating each and every word uttered and stripping as much off the sides.

Does anyone remember when BT got Tom Baker to record almost every word (with multiple inflections) for their voice message system and you could get Tom Baker to say almost anything you wanted to?

If someone from Lucascorps is reading this I'm sure money could be made by doing something like this if it could be cleared through the actor's agents.

Those trees shouldn't even be there behind them.

Here's hoping for a new model or/and new backgrounds for those scenes (and the gentle distant rumble of a waterfall).

I love the way that all the other Rebels are giving it the briefing that, "just another day blowing up stuff" look and Nien Numb is clearly thinking "We're screwed".

The AT-AT looks so much more realistic in that over contrasty low rez picture than it does in the actual shot with it's washed out non-colours.

Great job at trying to get the exterior of the barge to look even approaching convincing at look Leia has realistic skin tones.

The original looks like Jabba has been rubbing her with beetroot for kicks.

Hoh boy!

There was a short interview with him on a BBC Radio 4 Documentary about The Doctor Who Target Books for which he did a large number of covers (I think my first ever self bought book had cover art by him).

Anyone in the UK (I don't know if it can be played elsewhere) can listen again to it for a while here :

don't talk to me about belly dancers! that fat chick was freak'n nasty and not to mention a sucky dancer. I think something should be done with the twilek dancer

That dancer made sense because Jabba is an alien so he and his court would have an alien idea of what is exotic and beautiful.

However by belly dancing I meant something more like this :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6CvPakc2s8

Which is a centuries old tradition and very beautiful from almost anyone's point of view.

The ideal situation would be to find a burlesque or belly dancing group and film them with make up and contact lenses to get a more alien look and drop them into the scene.

...you might be able to remove some objects from the film...but what do you add and how?

...I like the idea of the burlesque show thing...it definantly depends on how it's handled...

I've wanted to make an edit with some sort of strip-show/dance, but I haven't really found any footage that's usable (footage wise, and content-wise).

Anyone got suggestions on something naughty, yet clean enough to be used in Jedi?

I'd say go over to Youtube and look up The Three Leias (pun intended) but be warned there is no Gaffertape just tassels ;-)

On the slightly less naughty side there are plenty of belly dancers on there which could fit the bill with a bit of colour adjustment.

It might be possible to digitally remove the offending elements (either puppet or CGI) Angel has managed it on some mockups and I manage to do it on a few too (it's no easy task).

If that fails building models and set segments are possibly the only other way.

Clearing the slate is one thing but then you have to decide on what to replace the elements with, my preference is more dancers like Oola and possibly a few more courtiers.

The problem is Jabba is meant to be the Star Wars version of the sort of character Frank Thring and Charles Laughton once cornered (Scheherazadian debanched obese royal grotesques) crossed with the sort of mafioso that Brando's Corleone was a caricature of.

The funk, disco dance routine just doesn't fit into that environment which is why I suggested the exaggerated alien burlesque dance some pages back (pg 87 to be precise).

If you replace the song and have the band as a backing for exotic dancers (like Oola) it fits better in the scene than a sudden reminder of 1983 (with funky puppets) or 1997 (with CGI cartoon characters).

The music should do for belly dancing what the Cantina group did for the Tommy Dorsey sound.

I was rather impressed with the majority of the clone trooper shots (at the time I thought they were men in suits in close ups).

Perhaps it was the less convincing backgrounds that made them seem more real than the rest of the elements.

I really liked it when the dust kicked up from the fallen Trade Federation sphere because it made even the battle droids look more real by removing the garish looking landscape.

The Wookiee battle in ROTS look more realistic largely because the backgrounds were based on photographic plates which gave the light renders a more naturalistic palette.

I know these are alien worlds but just dropping a terracotta tint over everything is a bit lazy.

I'll have a go with the gate types on the programs I already have first, thanks for the pointer Satanika.

vbangle, I followed that thread (largely because I knew I would be attempting this mini project) so I wasn't ever convinced, it's never a good idea to make wild claims unless you can back them up with extraordinary results.

Still the kid at school who told us he was Superman really could fly (for a few seconds when we craned our necks 90 degrees).

I like the general idea of Castle Dooku but the background is a bit too cyan for my taste (a crumbling dank grey with a hint of blueish green would carry the idea a bit better).

It would be great if the lights flickered on and off like flame torches or candles and were a bit more amber than deep red.

If you added another one on the top you would get a trianglular formation which could translate subsonsciously as resembling a flame while still being a piece of technology.

Episode I: The Phantom Strikes - TPM Edit by tehwallaby (* unfinished project *)
Time

Back in 1963 when the Daleks first turned up on Doctor Who they had to figure out a way of showing which Dalek was speaking, they already had the lights on the top so their elegant solution was to have them flash on and off in time with the dialogue.

You could do this with the battledroids, add one colour light for recieving orders from the central computer (maybe with a tiny computer chat sound like the probe droids have) and another colour light flash on in the rare occation that they actually speak (hopefully in a more menacing voice).

The little aerial on their backs may be a good location for this or in the case of the Super-Battledroids on their chest.

They certainly don't need to chat to each other if they are all getting their orders from the same source.

The saber colors have no deep mystical meaning. Sith use artificial crystals which make the blade color red. end of story no deep philiosphical meaning behind blade color.

I don't really see how you can use an in-universe explanation to debunk filmic symbolism.

There is no filmic symbolism to the lightsaber colors beyond the fact that Sith have red.

And Bingo Im not against more radical edits that enhance movies like Ady's ANH:R. But Ive never seen or seen an edit of a prequel discussed where enhancements were discussed or done, only subtractions or impossible to pull off complete rewrites, thats what Im against.

Sure but those who wish to alter the colours are doing so because they wish to extend the symbolism to the Jedi blades too (in various ways).

And this thread is an ideas thread for people who want to attempt the sort enhancements that Adywan wishes to attempt for the PT and ROTJ and perhaps go quite a bit further.

You've seen how long it's taken Ady to do his versions and they seemed on the onset to be less ambitious than they eventually turned out to be.

There haven't yet been many projects that even approach the level of reworking that Ady has done so really you are being critical of something people haven't had much of a chance to show you yet.

If you are so against such an enterprise it does seem a bit of a waste of your time being in vocal opposition to something that doesn't appeal to you or effect those things that do.

Paint his ass out. Angel paints jar jar out very well. Ady was able to remove rontos so it shouldnt be too hard.

Even of you could paint out Jar-Jar in CG, who on earth are Qui Gon, Obi-Wan, Padme and Anakin meant to be talking to in numerous scenes, the invisible man, you can't just remove a character who's in most of the major plot scenes !!

Sorry for moving this point over here Serji but what is a cry of desperation on one thread can be a call to arms on another.

If someone did have the time and patience to paint out Jar-Jar (and bear in mind that would mean having to remove his dialogue too, something I'm having related problems with at the moment) what would you replace him with?

See Threepio?
