Personally, I can go either way.  JEDI is just so damn goofy I don't know what you can do with it.

If you wanted it to be more serious, you would have to do a HELL of a lot more than just wack Lando, of which we've talked about:

(1) more native-esque, VC-ish Ewoks, with some storm trooper limbs getting tossed into the air during the dogpile scenes, as well as showing the Ewoks ability for digging tunnels with claws or tools; have more pit-related traps that the Imps wouldn't see coming (like logs on top of a cleared hill in an otherwise dense forest)

(2) a stronger voice for Vader with maybe some lines from EMPIRE to help him come across as a stronger character (or at least as the SAME character as what we saw in EMPIRE)

(3) if we have the whole corelation between Luke's mech arm and Vader's mech arm, I would still like to see Luke tearing off peices of machinery and throwing them at Vader during the final fight ala what Vader did at Bespin to show just how close Luke is to turning to the Dark Side, much less give a reason as to Vader taking a dive like he does.  I have NEVER bought that whole bit where Prowse damn near "knees the ball for a safety" and allows Mark to whack away at his arm and that is somehow supposed to convince me that Luke had the powa to overthrow Vader.

(4) being that the original intention before Lucas "prequelized" JEDI was to kill a main character, I know these edits are primarily for Ady, being that he is doing all the hard work, but it would still be nice to see what Kurtz and those others who seemed to take all of this more seriously than Lucas had in mind.

Regardless, if you wanted to keep it more or less the same, that would mean less editing and altering.. but then what is the point?  Ady can redo the space battle to make it more exciting and a little more serious, but if the ewoks are still a joke and Darth Vader is still a lame lackie, it's still going to be the same "prequel before the prequels" JEDI.

Even more regardless, this is a good 3 to 5 years off, so we'll have plenty of time to banter until then....

It would make sense keep posting the radical changes here seeing as there have been so many suggested here already.

And move the more basic stuff over to the inevitable ROTJ:R thread when it eventually pops up.

It would seem from Ady's post that his edit won't be going down the sort of route that the fan-o-matic suggested either.

So it looks like we will have to look elsewhere for a major story re-jig but it does mean somewhere down the line when Ady has finished his version their will be a better looking version to re-shuffle and who knows what talent and technology will be around in that exciting space year.

There again this latest update might be yet another joke at our expense and his final version might more out there than even our most bizarre suggestions.

for the cloaking device debate, the sith infiltrator, maul's ship, was a craft developed by the sith and since it was created by the sith, it has a cloaking device. the sith aren't retards and they needed to keep a low profile. i'm sure someone would've noticed a sith infilitrator taking off out of couruscant traffic. its a bit noticeable.

and ady, no offense to u, but u can't take everyline in a movie, in this case ESB, seriously.

Isn't the whole "Sith infiltrator having a cloak" having a cloak an EU thing anyway? because it certainly isn't in TPM.  If the sith created cloaking devises for their ships then why the hell when a sith is ruling the galaxy doesn't any of their ships have a cloak? Another useless EU addition. The amount of ships flying around Coruscant, with many different types coming and going, do you really think one little ship would stick out? no.

And it has nothing to do with taking every line in ESB seriously at all. It has to do with continuity. The EU and especially  the PT for that matter, should have taken what was said in the OT seriously then we wouldn't have the amount of fuck ups between the 2 trilogies and having the EU trying to explain it all.

As much as I really try to avoid conversations of this type my pedantry gland is over active today.

If the Sith did develop secret stealth technology it would make sense not putting in every ship of the Imperial fleet because then their cutting edge top secret technology would become common place. If the Rebels got hold of one Imperial ship they'd have mini cloaking devices too, their advantage would be lost and the Star Wars saga would be a visually exciting as Invisible War And Peace.

The technology could be sitting in a secret vault somewhere just in case the Sith order had to go back undercover for another thousand years but frankly it's a silly idea, cloaking devices belong in Star Trek, not Star Wars and certainly not Doctor Who.

Now that Ady has announced that Lando will not die in ROTJ:R could all talk of him being killed off be moved to here because the SAVE LANDO!! thread no longer has a purpose.

This isn't an exclusively Adywan thread so like all those ESB ideas that will not be in ESB:R it still has a home here for those who want to see it done (like me).

Any tips for getting near to isolating the dialogue elements from a film soundmix?
Time

As I posted on the other thread I've had limited success by going back and working on it from a word to word basis (which is very very time consuming).

There will be instances where it may be necessary to go further and break into longer words and strip the sounds at either end and then apply a gate to the remaining sound componants and then reassemble them (and even then it will not be perfection).

If we has a team of people with no friends and no social life who could do this for each character we might get a workable dialogue bank by 2017, it really is a labour intensive job with no quick fix solution that I can see (other than breaking into Fort Skywalker and liberating the data tapes).

Are there any key scenes you need attempting?

would they have things with legs walking around a dense forest of trees?  Really?

It's like people say 'why don't they just fly above the trees?' in the speeder bike scene. Doesn't always make sense. Wouldn't be nearly exciting otherwise. In the case of the walkers, I would think the AT-AT would do better than the AT-ST, but still a tad cramped in the middle of a forest. :p

Is it really an issue in a universe with lightsabres?

The AT-ATs could clear a path through a forest in a rather short space of time, especially if they had TIE Bombers burning the trees out of the way too (or if they were fitted with foot blades as I suggested a few pages back).

If you think about it the AT-AT isn't a very practical war machine in any environment (even ice-fields) it's more a techno-fantasy element than a Science Fiction one (though it would scare the crap out of me to see a number of those things crashing towards my house).

I've started on my own Attack Of The Clones edit. I'm still getting the hang of coordinating my visual cuts with the background music. I've split the ac3 into 6 wav files as per adigitalman's editing guide. I'm just wondering, how do the other editers here get around the problem of the voice channel also having music in it (which after cuts doesn't always sync up with the audio in the other channels).

I think I'm going to redo the music in the other 5 channels anyway. I'm just wondering if anyone knows off the top of their heads the best way to minimize the music in the voice track (I'm assuming it's impossible to remove it entirely)

Edit: Sorry. Just realised I should have posted this in the how to section, and also have just found Bingowings' thread asking exactly this.

I've had a limited amount of success by taking a word by word appoach but boy is it hard work (and time consuming).

The only way I can imagine doing it would be to start an order of Star Wars nerd audio monks who sit in their cells isolating each and every word uttered and stripping as much off the sides.

Does anyone remember when BT got Tom Baker to record almost every word (with multiple inflections) for their voice message system and you could get Tom Baker to say almost anything you wanted to?

If someone from Lucascorps is reading this I'm sure money could be made by doing something like this if it could be cleared through the actor's agents.

Those trees shouldn't even be there behind them.

Here's hoping for a new model or/and new backgrounds for those scenes (and the gentle distant rumble of a waterfall).

I love the way that all the other Rebels are giving it the briefing that, "just another day blowing up stuff" look and Nien Numb is clearly thinking "We're screwed".

The AT-AT looks so much more realistic in that over contrasty low rez picture than it does in the actual shot with it's washed out non-colours.

Great job at trying to get the exterior of the barge to look even approaching convincing at look Leia has realistic skin tones.

The original looks like Jabba has been rubbing her with beetroot for kicks.

Now these weren't just simple designs but full blown paintings similar to the works of Chris Achilleos ( who i had the great pleasure of meeting)

You met Chris Achilleos?

Hoh boy!

Greece is killing me sometimes....

-Angel

There was a short interview with him on a BBC Radio 4 Documentary about The Doctor Who Target Books for which he did a large number of covers (I think my first ever self bought book had cover art by him).

Anyone in the UK (I don't know if it can be played elsewhere) can listen again to it for a while here :

don't talk to me about belly dancers! that fat chick was freak'n nasty and not to mention a sucky dancer. I think something should be done with the twilek dancer

That dancer made sense because Jabba is an alien so he and his court would have an alien idea of what is exotic and beautiful.

However by belly dancing I meant something more like this :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6CvPakc2s8

Which is a centuries old tradition and very beautiful from almost anyone's point of view.

The ideal situation would be to find a burlesque or belly dancing group and film them with make up and contact lenses to get a more alien look and drop them into the scene.

...you might be able to remove some objects from the film...but what do you add and how?

...I like the idea of the burlesque show thing...it definantly depends on how it's handled...

I've wanted to make an edit with some sort of strip-show/dance, but I haven't really found any footage that's usable (footage wise, and content-wise).

Anyone got suggestions on something naughty, yet clean enough to be used in Jedi?

I'd say go over to Youtube and look up The Three Leias (pun intended) but be warned there is no Gaffertape just tassels ;-)

On the slightly less naughty side there are plenty of belly dancers on there which could fit the bill with a bit of colour adjustment.

It might be possible to digitally remove the offending elements (either puppet or CGI) Angel has managed it on some mockups and I manage to do it on a few too (it's no easy task).

If that fails building models and set segments are possibly the only other way.

Clearing the slate is one thing but then you have to decide on what to replace the elements with, my preference is more dancers like Oola and possibly a few more courtiers.

The problem is Jabba is meant to be the Star Wars version of the sort of character Frank Thring and Charles Laughton once cornered (Scheherazadian debanched obese royal grotesques) crossed with the sort of mafioso that Brando's Corleone was a caricature of.

The funk, disco dance routine just doesn't fit into that environment which is why I suggested the exaggerated alien burlesque dance some pages back (pg 87 to be precise).

If you replace the song and have the band as a backing for exotic dancers (like Oola) it fits better in the scene than a sudden reminder of 1983 (with funky puppets) or 1997 (with CGI cartoon characters).

The music should do for belly dancing what the Cantina group did for the Tommy Dorsey sound.

I was rather impressed with the majority of the clone trooper shots (at the time I thought they were men in suits in close ups).

Perhaps it was the less convincing backgrounds that made them seem more real than the rest of the elements.

I really liked it when the dust kicked up from the fallen Trade Federation sphere because it made even the battle droids look more real by removing the garish looking landscape.

The Wookiee battle in ROTS look more realistic largely because the backgrounds were based on photographic plates which gave the light renders a more naturalistic palette.

I know these are alien worlds but just dropping a terracotta tint over everything is a bit lazy.
