Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time

It might add to the already high realism of the matte to add just a tad of haze infront of the palace to blend it in with with the background and further the illusion of depth.

It would be a useful not just as a establishing matte but if it could be extended out you could even use it to show the barge party leaving for the Dune Sea.

This is a general ESB and ROTJ thread (not a Revisted one) though it has become more ROTJ recently with people posting most of their ESB ideas on Ady's thread at the moment.

There is a lot of great stuff to look at here so it's well worth a read.

The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome).
Time

As I said on the other thread, lovely work.

If only you could restore the actual footage, the monochrome cracked silent stuff with Mark looking up at the battle could be partially reconstructed in this manner, the treadwell could be replaced with a model and that would leave only a hazy odd looking Mark to colourise and have his lines redubbed (Sir Alec and Peter O'Toole redubbed deleted material for the Lawrence Of Arabia restoration so why not Mark?).

There were plenty of production stills taken for colour reference.

I don't think they would ever be good enough to be put back into even a DVD quality cut of the film but it might make it to VHS quality and make an interesting curio.

Return of the Jedi Jabba's Palace Musical Number Recut
Time

I was thinking something along the lines of Salome's Dance from Blade Runner (only not that because it's too immediately recognisable).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHxWBt8JtEQ

If anyone knows of a piece of music that's similar but obscure enough to go un-noticed or maybe there is a composer/musician/band out there that can run up something like it, that would be grand.

MCBarkingSpoon a general tip, try posting your comments outside the quote box and familiarise yourself with a thread before posting to it.

People have been posting mockups (and the occational Photoshop joke) here from the very beginning (something that dates back to when Ady was doing ANH:R) so it's not only something that is encouraged by Ady it's also as old as tea.

Surely in a snowstorm it would be snowing a great deal with a lot of wind.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqYdRsZbipM&feature=related

A realistic long distance shot in those conditions would be virtually redundant (a few blobs in a screen awash with greyish white)?

Possibly worse than this (not very cinematographic) :

Could we have a translator droid? Make sure it speaks Bitchy :-p

The originator of the thread has spoken he likes to see mockups and finds them helpful.

Nice mock-ups Angel. I haven't started the windows yet but i always liked the more minimalistic look of the originals and the look that they are very high up, so the buildings aren't going to be as prominent.

Is it ever clearly established how high up we are in that room?

Sure Leia and later the rest of the gang are on the top floor (thanks to the new matte matching the set) as they leave but it's not the tallest building and they may have gone down a few levels to get to the dining room.

As I said before that blue circle is far more distracting to me than the right kind of cityscape though I acknowledged how much work would be necessary to pull it off convincingly.

TheBoost idea that I like a lot is to make it clear that Luke spent a long time with Yoda for the last year or so. If he never saw Yoda since empire that means he was only trained by him for few days. Even with the best skills Luke could not became so powerful with so few training from a master IMO. I like the idea that Yoda never wanted to tell him the truth, but once he feel that he's dying, the truth needs to be told. Problem is it needs dubbing Yoda or finding a workable line from Hamill from another movie. (like "I need to ask you again" or something like that)

SSWR and the gang have been working on the idea for many moons, their basic take is to have Luke's part of the story start on Dagobah (with Yoda's death) so he's finished the training in the time between ESB and ROTJ, he then goes to Tatooine to assist in saving Han.

There are many variations of that basic but ingenious idea.

The Ewoks have been apparently waging a guerrilla war against the Imperials the whole time. Moff Jerjerod keeps denying that there is any problem with 'the natives,' clearly indicating that there is a problem

Now this is an idea I've wanted to see for a long time. You have the idea of a war. You combine it with the idea that the ewoks have scored victories, but are slowly losing. Their numbers are dwindling. Then you have them forging an agreement with the rebel strike force to launch an all out attack before they're wiped out for good.

This sort of thing has been brought up before too:

Head on a stick

What can be done from this brilliant list of ideas.

I already suggested a way for Leia to rush into saving Han after becoming impatient with Luke finishing his training on Dagobah (as in the fan-o-matic), so that part can be adapted.

Chewie throwing a guard into the Sarlacc might be doable by taking footage from the Endor battle and replacing a stormy for a skiff guard.

Yoda's new line could be added into the beginning of a fan-o-matic style cut or where it is in it's current form (suggesting he has been going back and forth but it might be a bit more vague that way).

It may be possible to replace conference members with a more diverse band (I've already voiced my dislike of the set as it currently exists).

Dropping the other generals in may be possible.

Alderaanians are already implied with the lone blockade runner but more could be added.

Making the Tydirium an Imperial transport rather than a shuttle would make more room for troops and equipment.

Chewie on the bike must be doable with a good model (but it might be difficult getting him to sneak past the troops).

I already did a mockup of the dish on a mountain ridge (all be it on the other side).

Rock Dish

Landing platform

The blowdarts and Ewok deaths can be adapted from elements from the Ewok movies (there have already been posts about how to make their culture more complex and convincing as fighters).

Blowdart

More ships are certainly doable going by what Ady has in mind.

More pilots might be doable too (there are plenty of people with spot on costumes who would love to be in a cut of one of the films).

And I love your idea of the audience jumping to hyperspace at the end (nice touch).

So there's plenty that can be done there.

I think that window should be the least distracting possible. Its an important shot, you dont want to be amazed by the background while big things are going on.

Agreed but in Angel's mockup the view not only shows a bit more of the majesty of the locale but keeps Vader and Fett firmly in the foreground (in fact they look clearer set against the sun bleached cityscape than they do against the big distracting and largely empty pale blue circle in the original).

I disagree with you there Prog5000, everyone wants to see the original, original ROTJ available to buy in the best format available but for a special edition (something the 97 and 2004 versions claimed to be) something should be done to try and lift the final part of the story to something approaching the standard set by ANH and ESB, which at the moment it doesn't (even if the effects were fixed).

That doesn't mean the basic story has to change that much but the execution of that story needs a real clean up.

It sounds mundane provincial and domestic (no grand political schemes or adventurous ambitions from Beru which is possibly why Owen loves her), therefore A) nice background info, we learn a bit more about the sort of woman who will raise Luke and B) it's adds a bit of grounding realism to a film with arena monsters and battledroids.

 Or it's similar to...

ANAKIN: I hate sand.

I don't have that much of a problem with those lines, just the delivery.

A different actor (and a different director) might have managed to pull it off without coming across as just some pervy teen trying to get into an older girls knickers.

The performances on both sides of the conversation, the direction, the score all came together to make a rather odd bit of cinema which is dances around every possible reaction, romantic, comedic, edgy and still manages to stick it foot in the bear trap of wooden and dull.

It deserves a special award for that.
