Technically he is the next in line or so he assumes. He is a person of importance.

Drunk is possessed.
Most of Hal Hartley’s films are from the eighties and early nineties. I discovered them late but I enjoy them but if Miracle Mile is your idea of torture you probably won’t like them. Sort of like David Lynch but with all the dream inspired weirdness turned down to barely registerable.
How would Luke know who it was? Does the Force tag force ghost posed shots on Forcebook?
I seem to remember Marcia suggesting the idea, George being nervous about telling Alec. Alec being initially a bit miffed and then was relieved that he wouldn’t have to stretch his acting abilities with the dialogue which he hated and then sat back and watched all the money roll in while moaning about the film whenever someone was brave enough to mention it. He did suggest Seb Shaw for Anakin though which was nice because he exuded a similar spirit in those few scenes his eyebrows were allowed to attend.
It’s interesting that black and white tones are largely in reverse of the first film.
The main antagonist is dressed in white and Jyn’s highest authority (someone she will have friction with presumably) also wears white, The opposite of Vader and the Emperor.
The bulk of the rebels and some troopers are dressed in black (the Han, Luke, Leia and most of the troopers were dressed in white).
Part of me wishes we saw this struggle from an Imperial perspective (like the Tie-Fighter games) where the Rebels are the dangerous terrorists and the Empire is merely the successor to the heroism that won the Clone Wars.
If you watch the making of documentaries Mr Best would perform in a particular way and Mr Lucas would ask him to exaggerate his movements to be more floppy and slack. He also wrote the dialogue, directed it and the ADR sessions and edited the film. If the Stepin Fechitness was accidental there were a lot of times and people to point it out and correct it. Nobody did. From this he earns a living?
Yes sir they can Google all night long
Ady fixed it on his version.
Nobody spill salt it’s officially Sluggo week. Huzzah!
…Miracle Mile (1989)…
*shudder*
It’s a great film. (Sounds better with a comedy Italian accent)
You can add Static (1985), Miracle Mile (1989), After Hours (1985), The Quiet Earth (1985), Night of the Comet (1985), Strange Invaders (1983), The Hidden (1987), Monster in the Closet (1986) to my pile
- there is no jewish race (nazis believed that, sionists still believe that, but this is bullshit), so Watto can’t be a jewish racial stereotype ;
Being a non-proselytising faith being Jewish is an ethnic descriptor. They are semitic people and a few rare examples aside share signifying genetic markers with other semitic people like Arabs (this is true of even Jewish people of African origin).
- Israel is a country with jewish people, muslims people, North African immigrants of jewish religion and of semitic ancestry, and European immigrants of jewish religion but not of semitic ancestry; so I don’t quite see the point of talking about Israel here since this is not a “full” jewish country nor a “full” semitic country, and which does not represent any race or stereotype that could be found in TPM ;
The mix in Israel and the occupied Palestinian states are practically semitic in background.
- so Watto is, AT MOST, a semitic racial stereotype. Watto is a slaver and a bad guy, and he looks like a bad guy you could find in North Africa/Middle East (or in the Steptoe/Sanford reference provided by yotsuya). It’s not subtle (Jabba is a bad guy who looks like a bad guy) but I fail to see why this would be racist/antisemite.
The performance is essentially a cartoon of Alec Guiness doing Fagin. Anakin is Oliver already.
America was having trouble
what a sad, sad story
needed a new leader to restore
Its former glory
Where, oh where was he?
Where could that man be?
We looked around and then we found
the man for you and me
And now its
Springtime for Trump and America
Happy US.A is gay!
We’re racing now on a faster horse
look out here comes a golfing course!
Springtime for Trump and America
Fall for Mexican Arabs
Springtime for Trump and America
come on Americans,
go into your dance!
I was born in New York, Queens
and that is why I’m wearing jeans.
Don’t be stupid, be like Ivanka,
be empowered by a wanker!
Springtime for Trump and America!
Finance is the dance today
Bombs falling from the skies again
USA is on the rise again
Springtime for Trump and America
U2s are flying once more
Springtime for Trump and America
means that soon we’ll be going
We’ve got to be going
You know we’ll be going to war!
I will start using the internet at some point, probably in your past.
Maybe they are developing naughty photos.

Padme’s main action was to wear makeup and clothes (she shoots a bit in two sequences in two movies and kicks a spidercat in the nuts).
Leia is arguably the only reasonably explored female character in the series (even more than the Mos Eisley pea-strainer or the little old lady that doesn’'t sell much in Mos Espa).
Weren’t UK comedians doing blackface long after it was taboo in the U.S.? I swear I saw a Benny Hill sketch where he was made up that way, although I can’t recall if it’s was the 70’s syndicated version here or the “unexpurgated” versions that ran on cable tv for a time in the early 90’s.
When I was growing up there was the very popular Black and White Minstrel Show it played in the same sort of strand as The Good Old Days which was partially the inspiration for The Muppet Show.
By the late seventies it was becoming clear that what was genuinely innocent entertainment from a culture reflecting on ethnic situations it had no real experience of to being rather sinister. Les Want was one of the performers on the show and he was doing his usual very popular routine at a Royal variety performance and then spotted his musical heroine Diana Ross and approached her to say hello. It was the way she recoiled from him that was a contributing factor to it being taken off air in 1978.
The Benny Hill sketch might have been a reference to the outcry from older viewers who still wanted the show to exist because of the songs and the feelings of nostalgia for seaside entertainers who had been putting on face make-up of all kinds since long before the UK had a diverse ethnic mix. The Goodies did a similar skit. The intention being to mock the use of black face not endorse it. It still feels weird watching it though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5olIvNVQKA
^I’m still not convinced it’s as blatantly (and truly) racist as it’s made out to be.
I don’t think it’s intentional. But I think George is fired up by nostalgia for the sorts of things he liked as a child and we know that some of that was serials from 1940s where depictions of ethnic groups and women were more broad.
What he seems to have tried to do here is keep the ethnic stereotype but reflect it onto an alien species or character. Jar-Jar is Stepin Fetchit but with a weird frog/rabbit body. The Trade Federation are cowardly, sneak attacking, robot obsessed, slit-eyed Japs, Watto is Alec Guinness being a Jew, not a Jew being a Jew. Women wear makeup and clothes and have babies (without sex) at a push they work in libraries. Alien women can twirl swords but only if the wear less clothes or say nothing.
I suspect this to be more because George has a very unsophisticated world view which if tempered by a team of advisers prepared to say no can lead to movie magic. If not can lead to disasters. Compare Brody and Sallah in Raiders to the same characters in The Last Crusade. In the first film of that series those characters were characters, realistically feeling people. In the third film they are broad cultural stereotypes played for laughs. Certainly not the same people.
The one problem I have with the final cut is the changes it makes to the Tyrell-Roy scene particularly what he says to Tyrell and later J F.
In the earlier versions of the scene he is fired up, barely repressing his rage until the final resolution where it explodes.
In the final cut what he does to J F doesn’t fit what he is saying to him and the F-bomb is sorely missed.
I can see why it was done, to foreshadow the final scenes, but it mucked up a pivotal scene for me.
I still would prefer more general chat sections.
If there was a totally un-moderated silly fun section and a serious discussion zone (with light moderation, total ban on profanity, insults etc) I think most of the flare ups we see here wouldn’t happen.
The personal problems sections are really useful and for the most part people are respectful there.
No moderation on highly contentious topics is inviting tension. I never said I would stop reading off topic. I started posting here again because people were posting about very deep depression and suicidal thoughts etc and it felt wrong not to add my sympathy to the rest of the people posting here. Once I did that it seemed a bit daft not to voice my opinions of the rating of Terminator movies etc. But I was very nervous about doing so because when I read certain opinions that goad me I respond and get very emotionally engaged in my responses and which generates similarly emotionally charged responses with people that my responses have upset. Life it too short.Off-Topic as it currently exists doesn’t really work well anymore and hasn’t for years.
It seems daft to me to have a whole forum category devoted to General Chat with only one section called “Off Topic” in it. Surely general chat is off topic??
Yes it was a continuation of the Daryl Hannah joke. Keep up 😄
As you are a Austin Powers fan when Vader asks about Padme you could have Palpatine exclaim that he shagged her.
He didn’t say they did.
Larry and Daryl are two guys from Newhart.
Sort of new canon Mara Jade?
