Jurassic Park III is the second best film in the franchise, behind only the first one. This film is aware that it’s meant to not be taken as seriously, and is a fun ride from start to finish.

I’m pretty sure that after the Jurassic World trilogy, this opinion has been getting more popular. Which is nice, because it’s also my opinion!

So the whole Silence of the Lambs/serial killer schtick has lost a lot of social context, and probably comes off as inexplicable to many viewers.

Absolutely. Without that context, the serial killer shtick just comes across as tasteless. Also, that kind of humor that prioritized shock over wit has really fallen by the wayside. It’s why shows like Drawn Together have become “nonmedy” (another word poached from RLM).

Anyone else think Empire Strikes Back's Special Edition is actually better than the Theatrical Cut?

Except he looks nothing like he did in ROTJ, upsetting visual continuity. And the altered dialogue is a hackjob.

The Adywan version of that scene is still the best. It gets as close to the original dialogue as possible, maintains the original shot list, and has more ROTJ continuity with the appearance of The Emperor.

I definitely prefer the look of the 1997 35mm prints, as we’ve seen with 4K97_V. The more consistent color timing (which was still respectful to the source material) was an improvement. It sucks that ESB came out in one of the worst years for film stock, when Eastmancolor was your only mainstream option with minimal alternatives (Fujicolor and Agfacolor, IIRC).

Just don’t give obvious A-holes the attention they clamor for…it’s that simple. Keep the conversations to the intelligent minded.

Yeah, you’re right. I just don’t like when people pretend that the A-holes don’t exist, and that the claims of A-holes existing are corporate proaganda or something. They’re real, and they’re a problem.

Anybody who tries to argue that the Fandom Menace doesn’t exist is a member of the Fandom Menace, whether they know it or not.

Also, go watch the Sarah Z video “Sacrificial Trash” about the phenomenon of mediocre-to-subpar media made by or featuring marginalized groups getting intense right-wing backlash and said backlash coloring the popular opinion of said media. I’m oversimplifying, but it’s a fascinating concept that arguably applies to this franchise.

The Birds (1963) is a seriously overrated film. There are many other classic Hitchcock pictures from both before and after this film that are better than this film.

Speaking of Hitchcock, the only Mel Brooks movie that couldn’t be made today is High Anxiety, because Hitchcock isn’t as big a part of the cultural zeitgeist as he was in the ‘70s.

So how about that Mandalorian show guys?

awwwwwww cutie baby

I have joked about recreating the legendary Rainbow Dash jar with a Grogu toy, but I thought that’d be a bit much. There aren’t nearly enough creepy men in the Star Wars fandom for the joke to land as much as it did with Rainbow Dash.

but it’s unnecessary to talk down to them by telling them to “just don’t watch it” and other childish retorts.

It’s not childish, it’s common sense. Why go back the ones who hurt you? It should be easy, as it’s an inanimate franchise and not an abusive partner. Quitting a franchise puts you in no physical or emotional danger, it’s healthy and often necessary.

I hated both Discovery and Picard because of how grimdark and edgy they were, so I stopped watching them after Picard season 1. But I heard Strange New World was a sort of return to form for the franchise, so I checked it out, and I ended up really enjoying it.

Funny enough, Picard season 3 seems like a course-correction that largely tosses the first two seasons in the garbage.

Basically, as someone else on here (I don’t remember who) once said, “Star Wars is a buffet. Enjoy the stuff you like, and leave the rest. Seek out stuff like Andor, and avoid stuff like Mando season 3.

Yup - that goes for all franchises. This motto has come in handy for me for most of my media experiences, especially as somebody who has always been more of a TV than movie guy.

The absolute meltdown that some people on this site have been having is really overblown.

My post was more or less telling those posters to quit wasting their time with the franchise if they’re just going to get angry about it. Then I injected my occasional “‘77 purist” stance because I had an analogy cooked up for it.

I’m still disappointed that nobody picked up on my “bricks and screws” reference. Ah well, I thought it was funny.

The “Disney has ruined Star Wars forever” crowd weirds me out because like, most ya’ll agree Lucas wasn’t doing the greatest with it either, with the special editions and the prequels.

Exactly. Hell, TCW did a fine job trampling all over some very good Legends material. I miss Karen Traviss’ Mandalorians. One-dimensional, but still fun.

Me, a borderline '77 purist:

The way I see it, the franchise has been coasting off of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back for over 40 years now and almost nothing since has lived up to that standard of quality. Andor, ROTJ, TLJ, and the original Battlefront games are all that come close to me (and they don’t come all that close).

It’s like being a New York Jets fan. You had one amazing moment, and then the next fifty years were filled with mostly garbage. Star Wars is the New York Jets of media franchises.

Sometimes it’s better to leave things behind than to dwell on them and project hatred. You’ve seen the body, and you’re ready to move on with your life.

I know it’s difficult to move on from the franchises you used to love, but giving them that power over your personality and your limited time isn’t all that productive.* It applies to sports, and it applies to the devil that is media franchise production.

*Unless you’re making money off of talking about said media online. Then, by all means, go ahead. Just be prepared for when people call you a clown for complaining about bricks and screws.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

So i had to go through each shot, frame by frame, and manually align the two sources, then mask out the areas i didn’t want, keeping only the detail in the dark areas. And i’m pleased to say that it turned out pretty good.

That’s some really impressive stuff, Ady! The added shadow detail really improves these shots. It’s making the best of the two (unfortunately) best sources we have.

But there is still a lot of the hard work left to do, which mainly involves lengthy rotoscoping.
It isn’t a lot left to do, but these are very time consuming ones to do. So please don’t think that a release is imminent.

That is entirely understandable. Take as much time as you need and never feel the need to rush shots.

So this scene is either going to be different to how it is now after i have been able to film some ANH style sandtroopers, or it will just go back to how it was in 1977 ( which i think actually works better). I’m also going to replace the mirrored troopers in this shot thanks to the newly filmed troopers.

I’d say to just go back to the 1977 version of the droid discovery scene. It works better pacing-wise and mostly preserving the 1977 pacing is an admirable goal. HAL9000 already did that in his edit (which included removing one of the CGI dewbacks) and it looked good.

Oh my, that’s some impressive stuff! It’s the perfect way to tie in R1 with the AOTC plans.

All in all, fantastic update Ady! I’m excited for the final project.

It looks amazing and I hope it’s not going to become an Ivan Ortega situation.

Whenever there are faneditors outside of this community and the IFDB forums, I worry about them going the Ivan Ortega way.

The Ivan Ortega ordeal escapes me.

He was breaking the “selling fanedits” rule, IIRC.
