Adywan are you fixing shots like these as well to look like the one on the top.

That’s a problem with the 2020 version , i’m using the 2011 mainly. Although that shot is a little softer in detail than the previous shot, it is nowhere near how badly scrubbed the 2020 blu-ray version is. I did give it a tweak to restore the detail though

2011 Blu-Ray

2020 Blu-Ray

ANH:RHD

I really don’t know why so many rave about the 2020 blu-rays. ANH & ESB are worse than the 2011 blu-rays in many respects. ESB is horizontally stretched and cropped, The static grain on all 3 is horrendous, the grading is flat and dull, the terribly executed use of power windows to brighten areas of a shot without bothering to move the masked area to track with the section as it moves in frame is mind blowingly amateurish, especially for someone that is supposed to be a professional, plagued with bed DNR smearing, the films have been scrubbed of so much detail and more. Why we can’t have a decent copy of these films in 2023 is beyond me.

I’m having to combine the two versions. For ANH:RHD, certain shots or sections from the 2011 version are being replaced with the 2020 version, but only in the places where the 2020 has a better image, which surprisingly, isn’t as much as you might think. For ROTJ:R though i’m having to use mainly the 2020 version as this is actually better quality than the 2011 version, for the most part, but there are some parts that are going to have to use the 2011

I’m half-surprised that you haven’t needed to use 4K77 or 4K83 to restore shots that are too far gone to DNR or poor color grading.

Rifftrax doesn’t help much, either. It’s one of those early ones, with Matt Sloan as Chad Vader on it instead of Bill Corbett. Pre-“trio reunion” Rifftrax is a strange beast indeed.

Speaking of Chad Vader, it really got weird after its first season. It wasn’t so much cringe-inducing as it was just bizarre. The production values were leagues above anything else on YouTube at the time (glares at Channel Awesome), but the content itself was fairly strange.

They have a huge TV catalog, and the very limited amount of HD restorations prove the rule (X-Files, Simpsons, can you even name a third?).

A 16:9 restoration so successful that the unrestored 4:3 versions had to be added due to fan outcry.

But… hold onto your DVDs. For the long haul.

Exactly - those commentaries and special features aren’t getting ported to streaming services, while also being subject to the current whims of the production team. Take James L. Brooks’ decision to delist “Stark Raving Dad,” for instance.

Funny you say that when Paul did re-record several Beatles tracks in his Give My Regards to Broad Street (1984), which got pretty bad reviews and even amongst Beatles and Paul fans is seen as a pretty bad entry in his canon.

Ringo (who was in the movie) refused to play on the re-recordings, because:

  1. If they were worse than the originals, he’d feel upset with himself.
  2. If they were better than the originals, then he’d never be able to listen to the original recordings.

Elliot Roberts did a good video on the project.

I’ve had a surprising idea for a radical restructuring of ROTJ - end it with TLJ’s Broom Kid finale. Give it a subtitle like “30 years later” or something like that, and show Luke’s story to be a myth inspiring people around the galaxy to find The Force. It wouldn’t work in a more faithful fan edit, but in something that tries to reinterpret the OT/saga, it could work.

This kinda rips off the idea of Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor (legends of Luke vs. reality of Luke), but that’s a good legends novel to emulate.

At least they only have 1/3 of the word count that Stardust1138 had.

Oh God, don’t remind me. 😉

But it’s interesting you brought him up, because I remember he was a massive Rick Worley fan too. Why does that guy have so many loyal followers? Why do 4 hour apologia sessions for some of the most hated creators in history seem appealing to anyone?

They’re natural contrarians, no matter the morality involved. A lot of prequel fans feel resentment for years of abuse those movies took in pop culture, so it’s natural that it sometimes comes out in bitter ways. Worley takes it a step further by adding in Woody Allen and JKR.

Similarly, I do remember Stardust giving the “but she (the victim) forgave him” excuse when talking about Polanski. But that’s a whole separate can of worms.

Yeah, “Yub Nub” with the Williams orchestral backing (like Neverar suggested) is looking a lot more appealing. It’s in-keeping with the original intent, albeit with a bit more gravitas.

The music debate almost makes me wish the movie ended with the pyre scene. In a radical reinterpretation of the movie that could work, but the focus should be on better executing the OG ending.

I’ve got one idea, that uses the end credits version of “Parade of the Ewoks” (appropriately upbeat/triumphant for the party - and has Yub Nub vibes sans lyrics), that segues into “Luke and Leia” from the end credits once Luke shows up.

I really dislike “Yub Nub” and “500 Nations Ripoff,” so finding something from the 1983 OST that “works” is my goal.

EDIT: yikes this is also the Woody Allen is innocent guy too

EDIT: I take back my faint praise of Polanski.

Woody Allen truly is scum and the more people who dismiss him and his work the better. Also, Worley is a TERF.

So no response to the points made in the video?

Concession accepted.

Some points aren’t worth engaging, especially coming from the mouth of somebody who defends the reprehensible, like Allen and Rowling.

Also, if you’re so against the preservation of the OT, why the hell are you even here? Are you simply a troll? Well, given that your join date was 2007 and you waited 15 years to post something, I’m not entirely sure.

I still maintain that the best Tom Cruise performance ever is his Lestat in Interview with a Vampire, as it’s the only time he disappears into the character. Heck, he elevates that movie into “pretty decent” territory.

IMO Tom Cruise excells in villanous/asshole roles. Collateral and Tropic Thunder Thunder are proof of that. I’d love to see him play bad guys more often.

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting him in Tropic Thunder - the guy really does villain/dickbag roles so well.

Any chance on ending on something other than Yub Nub? Another Williams track perhaps?

Someone did a mockup of the “Luke and Leia” theme from the soundtrack album inserted into the Ewok celebration, and I remember it worked really well. Of course, you’d have to cut out the shots of the Ewoks playing instruments, but I think it’s a great track to end the trilogy on. Melancholy, yet somehow incredibly cathartic.

That was me! I’ve revised it now, replacing the instrument shots with both party establishing shots used in the SE (which were 1983 B-roll, so it’s still visually cohesive).

It’s a rough idea, but I like it as a less cartoon-y ending to the movie while not ripping off a temp track.

Also he actually had the balls to say Jedi Rocks isn’t any more cheesy then Lapti Nek. pukes

Lapti Nek’s only real issue is that the Sy Snootles marionette puppet looks unconvincing within the context of the other 1983 puppets. A stop-motion puppet or even a suitmation puppet (obviously with a different design) would’ve been feasible and better.
