The Unpopular Film, TV, Music, Art, Books, Comics, Games, & Technology Opinion Thread (for all you contrarians!)

Nothing But Trouble is under appreciated in terms of set design, world building, and effects work. It’s not funny and is proof of why Dan Ackroyd needs people to filter and condense his scripts, but it’s a visual treat for the most part. Give it another set of eyes on the script or another director, it could be a surrealist classic.

We could try EbSynthing Hayden’s face onto Shaw’s. God knows that never goes horrifyingly wrong. For better results, we could try a Deepfake.

Well, your Yoda EBSynth tests looked pretty dang good. Heck, the TPM puppet one is useful for the ketamine/2001 Honda Civic/offensive memes.

These tools seem very useful for these fixes to bad makeup, making characters’ appearances consistent, and just doing weird stuff. Heck, EBSynth and Deepfakes could give us Lego Star Wars: The Weirdest Trip Ever! 🤤

But back to the idea at hand, Frankenstein-ing footage and making it work through VFX (perhaps with sade1212’s age-up) would be a good way to go about it, along with a few other tricks (EBSynth, Deepfake, etc.). Like I said, “just bring back Shaw” is too limiting. We have Adywan’s ESB Emperor and people using Battlefront II clips to improve Morrison’s Fett, so it’d be nice to have the “improved 2004 changes” hat trick.

<strong>Star Wars (1977)</strong> - a general <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> thread
Time

I was thinking about a moment from the Obi-Wan vs. Vader duel when Vader says “You should not have come back” and Obi-Wan flashes a very concerned look.

Obi

My thought was when considering a prequel rewrite, to make this bit the time when Obi-Wan realizes that it’s Anakin who is Vader, not the “other pupil.” He thought that there could be a chance (i.e., saw Anakin using the dark side more and more), but never truly realized it until this moment. Obi-Wan remains resolute despite the revelation, with his smirk towards Vader now meaning something like, “Anakin, that’s your son out there. I’m making damn sure he’s getting away from you now and I’ve got a guy who’ll help him kill you. Your obsession with me hasn’t changed since the Clone Wars, so you probably can’t sense him at this moment.”

I like the idea of Obi-Wan being in the dark about Vader’s true identity all these years, as it adds a little bit of dramatic weight to each time Obi-Wan tries to tell Luke about Vader. Heck, it even gives his final conference with Luke in ESB a bit more weight. He can’t tell Luke the truth he just found out (and probably told Yoda), so as not to give him that same disconcertion he had during the ANH duel. Obi-Wan knows that Luke won’t be able to take this revelation well, as unlike him, he hasn’t had the many years to ponder it.

Weird Idea but maybe it will work - Anakin and Darth were two separate people
Time

I do like the idea, but I’d give it a bit of a twist. The Anakin and Darth Vader (both apprentices of Obi-Wan, with Vader having fallen in Episode II) characters fight each other in the third prequel and we don’t see the outcome. Obi-Wan would fight who we think is Vader, not knowing that it’s a fallen Anakin posing as Vader (perhaps to avoid detection by Palpatine). The duel takes place as normal, with Anakin-as-Vader sustaining critical injuries and Palpatine manipulating his memories to remember Anakin as “another person.”

However, the events of Star Wars trigger memories within Anakin-as-Vader and Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan would sense something of Anakin within Vader when he says “you should not have come back” (look at the expression on Sir Alec’s face), while Anakin-as-Vader would feel the “Skywalker connection” during the tench run. This eliminates Obi-Wan lying to Luke (as he didn’t know Vader’s true identity - Yoda did, but Yoda’s abilities are more fine-tuned than Obi-Wan’s) while giving Anakin-as-Vader a revelation that might steer him towards the light.

I’m kind of disappointed in nobody here picking up the Ajan Kloss = Naboo torch. To me, it’d be an excellent way for the series to go “full circle.”

I don’t know, it seems from the supplementary material that the FO is straight up burning down places that have shown to have any ties whatsoever to the resistance and also Leia is changing bases like socks, even more often than the rebellion. Moreover, the bases seem to be almost exclusively on planets without civilised governments. Naboo is the sort of world that they would be found on immediately. Of course, you could ignore that and imply a different power dynamic, where the war is less one-sided

I’d trend towards ignoring the supplementary material (like, hard ignore), but that’s just me.

I can see you’re responding resoundingly in the negative. Who can blame you? The video never goes into detail on that incentive.

sigh I’ll show myself out.

I still have flashbacks to Doug’s video on The Wall, where he misses the point of the album/movie so severely that it’s depressing (because holy crap, that album/movie’s themes apply to him so well).

After jonh’s awesome upgrade, I’m even more inclined to remove “I’m all the Jedi.” He has made it so we can show instead of tell. And as Dom and SWOTFAN25 have now convinced me, the boss battle with lightsabers is the antithesis of Jedi ideals, and her terrible, parroted line back to Palpatine compounds this error.

Agreed. Cut the “I am all the Sith!” and “I am all the Jedi!” exchange.

Okay, so here’s the clip from when I was working on “Last of the Jedi” many years ago. I may get back to the project eventually, if I do it would hopefully be better, I had done a lot of the editing of the film before I had Vegas so it wasn’t great. So I’m not actually proud of it. 😕

Also I was running out of harddrive space before I finally upgraded, and I exported the whole film to 480p mpeg to to cut the file size…

But as it is, it does show that making Luke kill Fett can work.

It’s a decent solution, but I’m more a fan of just cutting Fett completely out of the movie. Unless the blast from the barge kills him (or is deflected by Luke at him), I just think it looks kinda ham-fisted.

I don’t know if anybody can mock it up, but when Fett hits the ground, could it look like he’s been fatally injured (e.g., blaster damage, just his helmet falling down, etc.?)?

Fett’s silly death is pretty in keeping with the tone of the ST, actually.

Eh, I’d rather not less the ST’s tone detract from one of the OT’s better action scenes. Besides, eliminating Fett in Jedi adds to his mystery in Empire. He’s a cool guy who now doesn’t get exposed for being a dummy!

The side benefit is that the force kick is now also gone unless you want to paint Fett out of the shot.

I’ve been playing around on the sail barge fight scene, trying to cut Boba Fett from the whole affair. I’ve found that the most difficult part has been getting the right coverage to maintain a decent pace.

The first take has more of the fight intact, albeit with one slowed shot and one wide shot with Fett in it (he’d be roto’ed out). The second take cuts from Lando falling off to the other skiff firing on the heroes’ craft.

Here’s the video. Password: fett

It’s sloppy, but I think it’s possible.

what do you want to fix in ROTJ?

Well, what I’d like to see is a version of the Hayden ghost in ROTJ that looks more content and proud of Luke and less…creepy. Just more appropriate to the moment than the take George chose.

And I’d be curious to see what it would look like with the aging-up you’ve given him for TROS.

Indeed! I’ve wanted that for some time now. Maybe it’s because I grew up with the LEGO Star Wars games, IDK.

Ghost

It also gives us an alternative to “just bring back Shaw,” which I find kind of limiting.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

I will also definitely try to set up some collaboration with oohteedee, because it seems he’s already done a lot of the work and maybe I could just provide him with despecialized shots for his version to replace shots that in his version are just cleaned up scans but could be put together in higher quality by despecializing.

Indeed. You two working together would be a dream come true! The work done by oohteedee (and Skydude, for some shots) is fantastic and will really add to a proper “Despecialized” version of the movie.

We’ve come a long way since upscaled Laserdisc footage, and thanks to work like yours and oohteedee’s, we may soon have near-seamless OOT reconstructions.
