STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time

It’s best to do what CatBus does with conforming Special Edition dubs to Despecialized - just make edits to replicate the media it’s synching to and present it like that.

On that dub note, I do hope Adywan keeps all the mono mix bits he added in for the SD version. There’s a new mono mix restoration in beta testing at the 4K77/80/83 forums (MaestroDavros’ production) which might be useful.

I regret to report that certain people are being racist knobs towards a black actor in Star Wars. Again.

Yep Disney’s doing that thing where they call fans a bunch of “-ism’s” and “-phobe’s” because they criticize one of their characters or movies. All so tiring. Singling out a few trolls that are saying racist things to get a reaction, while the overwhelming response from fans has been about her terrible acting. Has absolutely nothing to do with skin color. The fact they put those articles out beforehand warning Moses Ingram of “racist” comments from fans, tells me they knew the character was bad and going to cause issues, and are now going to use race to shield it from any criticism.

It’d be great if Disney and Lucasfilm would stop intentionally causing riffs in this fandom. I felt the fandom was starting to come together again after the sequel trilogy debacle. But here we go again.

That is a disgusting and wrong-headed take that downplays the amount of terrible comments about Ingram.

It’s not “deflection,” it’s the truth.

The conspiracy nut who believes that Shakespeare didn’t write Shakespeare and whitewashed the Stonewall Riots? No thank you.

Just because people are good at one thing doesn’t mean that they are good at all things. You think Deborah Chow did a good job? I’ve seen better television in unaired pilots from the 1940’s.

I think you’re being a tad bit hyperbolic, but that’s just me.

What we see on screen in the Special edition sequence are ROTJ stormtroopers with sandtrooper bits added. The helmets are slightly squashed, same as the ROTJ ones and they have the solid black mouth.

Whelp, I guess I’m never unseeing that!

Anyway, I’m glad things are coming along well and I’m pleased that the overall pace of the movie is more akin to the OOT. Hal’s method of shortening the “Look sir, droids!” scene has long been a favorite change of mine and I’m glad you’re doing something similar (along with fewer CGI dewbacks/riders - even the classic Battlefront games had better character models for stormtroopers).

The Topaz AI stuff sounds like an excellent method to ameliorate the grain issues present in the HD and 4K masters of the movies, while also bringing the HD branch up to snuff in 1080p.

But as noted, Filoni isn’t great at translating that broad simplistic emotionality into adult drama, which is one reason why his other shows suffer.

Definitely in that regard.

Bringing the thread back around, I would’ve liked to have seen Tagge’s full bit at the briefing table restored to ANH (i.e., Death Star is Tarkin’s vanity project and Vader is a Sith) during the SE. The same thought goes for “OK, hotshot!” during the Han-Leia kissing scene.

If it weren’t for 2000s nostalgia being in right now, ATLA would be seen as just kind of above average.

Eh, I’d beg to differ. It was probably the most successful attempt at a shonen anime among western studios, tackling plenty of mature topics and providing a satisfying narrative. If we want a Nickelodeon show that falls apart under any scrutiny, the numerous Dan Schneider sitcoms fit the bill.

With the excellent work on Anakin and Ben’s Ghosts for Ascendant I am kind of surprised we haven’t seen a similar attempt at making a new version of Anakin’s RotJ Ghost.

Unless we have and I’m missing it somewhere. I prefer seeing Hayden at the end, but with the look he gives, I understand folks usually using Sebastian. Has this been corrected?

I’ve written about several methods for it.

Option 1: Stock footage of full-body Hayden, tweaked to fit the shot (most difficult, since there’s not enough footage).

Option 2: Use a double with appropriate Jedi robes and a wig (akin to Adywan’s 3rd unit stuff), with a Hayden deepfake atop the double (less difficult, but it would require several attempts to nail - it might require outside help).

Option 3: Deepfake Hayden’s face onto Shaw, carrying over Shaw’s facial expressions (likely the easiest and fits with “canon age” argument - the hair won’t line up with Ascendant, though).

Option 4: Use better Hayden footage from ROTS to paste onto Shaw’s body (difficult and still has the “Shaw body” issue).

I think Option 2 is the best option, but I’d be open to any of them if they looked good. A good Hayden ghost has been my biggest wish for ROTJ fanedits.

That’s easily it’s weakest season.

Yeah, but that’s not saying much. It’s still a great season, and I remember his episodes being very well directed. He did the premiere ones and the finale ones with some in between IIRC

Indeed. Being the weakest ATLA season is like being the least talented member of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Carl Palmer is still a legendary percussionist, much like how ATLA’s first season is still wonderful.

But back to the point, Filoni is hit-or-miss with Star Wars IMHO. When he does well, it’s really good. When he’s off his game, it’s intolerable.

All of Dave Filoni’s shows are decent but overrated at best (ATLA/TCW) but mostly kinda bad. The Mandalorian is his best show, but it seems that it was good in spite of him. The two episodes he directed were the worst two.

You did NOT just say ATLA is overrated.

(TCW might be a little overrated though. I think it’s great and I love it but it irritates me that so many fans just cherry pick the good parts and ignore the bad)

Also, Filoni only touched Season One of ATLA. That’s easily it’s weakest season.
