I guess it's encouraging that he's got a little marketing-speak name for it at least ("classic versions"). All the more important stuff that gets manufactured, like the toys, video games and the Sebulba jockstrap, starts out that way.
The guy in the hoffman forum said something about having "2k scans of everything including unused/alternate" takes (maybe that's where they got that alternate shot of old Ben for the Episode III trailer) I don't know if that includes the shots that were removed in 97 or if that's even considered good enough, preservation-wise. (Also, Gary Kurtz said separation masters were done for Empire too.)

I'll go with the trench run, but the whole first movie is freakishly iconic, scene after scene. (Even publicity stills have become that way, how many movies can say that?)
I saw the Spartacus reconstruction in a theater and you'd never know it was that far removed from the negative. And that was years ago, Harris probably can do some amazing things now.
Ok that makes sense. I know he did exactly that for Spartacus with the separations because the negative was useless.

Yup, except for maybe 7 of the most obvious lightsaber shots, the whole thing looks exactly like they want it to. (At this point, I've kind of given up on them doing anything from the negative, just holding out hope they'll do the '82 Blade Runner thing and use one of the other sources.)

The OOT is a niche thing only compared to a handful of other huge titles. Not compared to the vast majority of movies that still warrant a release every week. Studios would murder their grandmas to have that level of sales for the other catalog titles, especially now. Besides being the right thing to do, it cannot lose money.

What can they be putting on 3 BD-50s? That's a lot of room. If they're gonna have 3 bonus discs anyway, all they had to do was present the 77/80/83 versions on each one, with a popup option to watch alternate/deleted/b-roll where appropriate ( ala the T2 disc that has a mode like that).

This is encouraging. It's great that the legislation specifies "the version as first published". An important distinction to all the people (and there are many) who consider the changes merely cosmetic and insignificant. (also, thanks for taking the time to write the guy, zombie)

All told, I probably laughed most at the Anakin strike buzzer in the Clones review, but this new review was still pretty good. The section about the endless scenes of people walking unnaturally slow while talking/or sitting and talking is the whole thing in a nutshell to me. (well, that and the old standby of not giving a shit emotionally about any of these characters or this clone vs. robot war)
Fox distributed the 97 version too, that's no guarantee they donated the 1980 version from their archive. (or that they even had anything to donate that wasn't totally pink by now)
