Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

It is kind of impressive and Inception-y how Lucas was able to plant the seeds of this general idea and make it grow out there, becoming normal. Whether it's remakes or special editions or 3D, the idea is everywhere now: keeping Star Wars "up-to-date" in one way or another (every few years for the rest of our lives I guess) is something that just needs to happen. Something that would have sounded really stupid in 1994 became inevitable by 2004.

George Lucas on Special effects and filmaking during making of ROTJ
Time

I think young Lucas was just talking about how the effects wouldn't mean jack if people didn't like Ford, Hamill and the gang, not the necessity of FX scenes, or lack thereof. This topic would come up a lot in that period, usually in the context of getting Lucas to distinguish Star Wars from Black Hole, Galactica, Star Trek I, Krull, Dragonslayer,  and everything else that came out in its wake.

Hey come on now, he's not an asshole. This situation with the original versions is more of a dick move. Anyway the reality is that he just doesn't have the same job he had in 1983 so his m.o. is different now. He quit making movies to sell trinkets and give ponderous interviews. Did you know that Joseph Campbell Mythology Genre Limitations of Technology?

Adventures in Raising the Next Generation of Original Star Wars Fans

Yikes, forget the kids, I was just reading how fewer and fewer adults even bother with anything slightly "old", even though access to that stuff is easier than ever. The Godfather/Citizen Kane/etc. aren't just boring and overrated to kids and teenagers now, apparently most 30 year olds can't sit still for that stuff and never will. (edit-on the plus side, our kids will have a pretty badass president!)

Did Lucasfilm advertise the 2004 DVD boxset as...
Time

I guess all the pan/scan/editing disclaimers etc. is something the industry agreed to do as self-regulating, but Lucas is above that. A situation like this is just too retarded to get the law involved, you can't make it illegal to be douchey. (The press for the blu-ray box is just the latest example. "Hey, nerds! Pre-order this thing without even knowing what's on it!")

I'm saying those who unconditionally see the OT as perfection and the PT as pure dribble have their opinions distorted by nostalgia -

Nostalgia can't make a person involuntarily giggle or yawn at the prequels. And this isn't like grading a math test. Nobody goes down a list picking out the number of flaws in one movie vs. another and arriving at a score. If people give a shit about Han being frozen temporarily but not Padme dying permanently, that's all she wrote, there's no nostalgia involved.
