Info Wanted: the bare minimum - what would you want put back?
Time
Damn, is there really footage cut out of that scene? What a pisser.
Maybe a better question would be, if for some weird reason Lucas decided that the last, Final Cut version should actually be CLOSER to the original, what would you most want in there? (hey, you never know, it sort of happened with Spielberg's 3rd version of Close Encounters)

People like to make lists. Let’s say Lucasfilm makes a compromised “original-ish” dvd of Star Wars, and said “this is the best you’re gonna get nerds, you can have a handful of 1977 shots back in the movie”. Basically they use the audio from the 2006 dvd and the image from the 2004 set. Color issues aside, and with the “extra” shots simply cut out (the Jabba scene, Greedo’s gunshot etc.) I counted 11 of the 1977 shots that I considered “must haves” to be reintegrated. These aren’t to make the movie cooler or better, these are just to eliminate the stuff that screamed 1997 the most to me. These are the shots I just gotta have:
1.Ben’s hut
2. Mos Eisley-the shot that had a dinosaur and a falling jawa pasted over
3. “How long have you had these droids?”-without the dinosaur walking in front of everything
4.Mos Eisley-entering the cantina, without roaring dewback
5. wolfman drinking
6.Death Star-Han turns corner, runs into 5 stormtroopers instead of hundreds.
7.X-wings take off from the jungle
8.x-wings approach death star rearview
9. X-wings approach, front view
10. S-foils lock into attack position
11. death star blows up
What am i missing? What are your must-haves? Remember this isn’t to make the coolest ideal version, just the most 1977-ish.

Would you give up ESB in exchange for...?
Time
No way. Look, at some point in the future, there will be an official release of Star Wars 77, or a really good bootleg. It will then be possible to watch the movie as it was. All the other stuff that's happened since will melt away as you watch the dusty, empty Mos Eisley in full natural clarity, without the distraction of the finest Roger Rabbit cartoon shit 1996 had to offer. As for the mainstream perception of Star Wars, it doesn't really matter, because if we're in here talking about one movie or six, we're still just dorks.

"Lucas can't find home for Star Wars spin-off"

The problem with Coppola's quote about Star Wars robbing us of a great director, is that he seems to forget that Lucas hates directing! After 1977, he probably would have just disappeared like Terence Malick or something. So I don't think we were really robbed of anything, we got 5 more movies as gravy. And I bet it would be surprisingly easy to ignore one or all of them if he ever puts out a disc of SW 77 that looks equal to motherfucking Delta Force 2. I can watch Godfather I and never think about III, or the Godfather videogame, or the new spinoff novels. Star Wars will be no different if the movie is ever treated right. But, if the only way I could watch Godfather I was on a cruddy streched laserdisc from 1993 OR a new version with Andy Garcia and Sofia Coppola pasted into it, that would be a lot harder.

Uh, Oh yeah, this TV show will suck harder than Cop Rock.

I wouldn't give up Empire (or even Jedi or Revenge, really) but I can understand that view. You can't underestimate the simple "purity" of that first movie, for a lot of people, that's THE reason to be into Star Wars, that is the essence of its charm and a larger "saga" with everything explained and resolved is almost a complete 180 from that. A scifi/fantasy "franchise" is a more ordinary thing, we have lots of those.

Lucas seems to be forgetting his truly terrible track record in television. "It's Star Wars", well so was Ewok Adventure. And Young Indy had a great, amazing roster of talent and still bombed in the ratings. He should understand why the networks would be a little gun shy.
It really is hard to say how Star Wars is perceived these days. I don't think the general population flat out hates the prequels, but I do think they are just getting indifferent to Star Wars in general. I only say that because the same thing happened in the 80s, people move on.
