Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I wonder what it would have been like if he had done the changes back during 78-82, since the movie was being re-released every year anyway, it must have crossed his mind. Especially since Spielberg did exactly that with Close Encounters, right down to the "special edition" tag. He even had access to the still age-appropriate actors (Spielberg brought back Dreyfuss and Bob Balaban 3 years later) and was apparently so tortured and emo about the shots that didn't work, he might have done something interesting.

I wish he really was twirling his mustache and being "sadistic". At least that would be kooky and interesting. This whole dumb thing is just about keeping it an attractive franchise for kids. Does anybody remember that hacky phrase  "It's time to bring____into the 90s!" Basically, the special edition is Poochie.

How many of you watch the Clone Wars series regularly and what do you think of it?
Time

I've missed several episodes, do we have an idea how close to Episode III they are now? I thought the one with Tarkin was pretty cool, that kind of OT connection interests me more than a Chewie cameo since it relates to Anakin, and how cartoon Anakin is sort of a do-over for movie Anakin. They've even told the guy who does the voice not to do a Hayden impression, yet Ben and Padme etc. are meant to sound very similar to those actors. (That might be awkward if they ever meet at conventions or whatever. "Hi, they told me to make sure I don't talk like you")

What is your favorite versions of the following movies: Apocalypse Now, Alien, Aliens, Blade Runner and Terminator 2?
Time

All theatrical except Blade Runner. As Paul Hirsch just said in an interview, things are cut for a reason. My only real beef with the Blade Runner final-cut is it's so dark now I can't see all the little tchotchkes and shit they spent so much time on with the set design, it looks very modern. And I've tried to be open-minded about the whole Deckard-replicant thing but there's still one big hurdle I just can't get over. Watch the last scene when Ford finds the unicorn. THAT'S his reaction? "Well, I guess I'm a robot."  I'm sure we'd all react that way when realizing all our memories are fake and we're probably gonna die soon.

Are the restored elements for the 1997 special edition still intact ?

That's where 90% of the negative is?

What's unfortunate about this is that it's really sounding like it's not even about any kind of artistic pride or whatever. It's just a mundane management decision that says even though it wouldn't lose money, it wouldn't make enough to be worth the effort. The original Star Wars trilogy, subject to the same policy as a flavor of Cheetos.  (or, remember that supermodel who said "I don't get out of bed for less than 10,000 a day." )

Here comes "The Making Of The Empire Strikes Back" book!
Time

To me, the most interesting thing about "midichlorians" of any kind existing in '77 is the fact that they were relegated to the trashcan along with the Kaibur crystal. And that young Lucas makes a point of saying that the force concept got better the less he explained it. And anything physical just made it mundane. It's impressive how all his instincts were so right on the money back then, even though he was fairly young and had only directed 3 movies. The Raiders story transcripts illustrate this very well.

George Lucas Quotables - Currently : "When 'Star Wars' first came out, I didn't know where it was going either. "

I can't find the source in the link, so just a question to throw out there... is the source reliable? Because from the sounds of it, it sounds way too much like some duck a jokester or GL hater could've written.. you know... it's just way too convenient.

It's legit. It was even read aloud to the audience by Lost's producer. Lucas gives the "always planned" spiel only about half the time, depending on the audience. Sometimes the homey, flying by the seat-of-the-pants, making it up as we go- version suits the situation better.

New Blu Ray Special Editions
Time

Honestly, I think perfecting them is not possible. The special edition stuff isn't jarring solely because the texture mapping or whatever isn't up to snuff by 2011 levels. The movie is just this scrappy, medium-budget thing from the 70s and that's a really big part of its personality. Your brain will always register this flash of weirdness if some amazing, perfect creature suddenly appears in that kind of a movie.

Making of Return of the Jedi (the book) Thread
Time

The director thing is tricky since warsies love to say george directed it, but I just dunno. If Marquand had lived, he'd be doing conventions and talking about all the daily decisions involved shooting Luke vs. The Emperor, Admiral Ackbar and Jabba and we'd probably have a different picture. There actually seems to be a lot more anecdotal stuff out there for Spielberg directing Poltergeist than there is for Jedi. (also, Nicky was one of the ewoks)

the reasons why episodes 7 8 and 9 will/should be made
Time

He's not some greedy megalomaniac, nothing that cartoony. We have these expectations that a director will have a passion for directing, and he's just not that guy. (Which is fine, except it can make him seem cunty when he acts like he's doing everyone a favor by releasing dvds or various products, or that it's this huge imposition that people have affection for his early work.)

I can't see it happening, not while the merchandising is doing so well. They make more dough from that than from the movie tickets, so why bother. GL hates making the movies anyway (and he really hates making prints and the cost and hassles of distribution). A season of the cartoon gets you close enough without the effort, the only part you miss out on is theater tickets, which gets divvied up too much anyway.(Plus, you don't have to make up a whole new phoney baloney reason the new "story" is just too important not to tell.)
