The scripts for aligning and combining the clips also worked!

Oh, I assumed you had already done that in that clip, and was surprised at how well it had turned out.

I'm sure there must be some tuts out there for combining HDR together (I've never actually done it myself), you'd just have to figure out how to apply that to video.

Do you have Windows 7?  I think that only the version of WMP under Windows 7 will play dimensions larger than 1080.

I tried both WMP 11 and mplayer2.exe (6.4) and they both ran it just fine on Windows XP.

how are people playing this in windows media player?

Install the DivX Plus codecs: http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus

^ It'll try to install the DivX Player and a bunch of other stuff too, just tell it not to.

Holy smokes.

It's 1280x480, so you'll need VLC or similar to play it.

I had no problems whatsoever watching it in WMP.

Also, as for the corners, I'd suggest leaving them as-is; I didn't even notice them until I remembered to check.

Maybe it's just the way the film shakes around, but the pulldown looks jerkier than usual to my eyes? Or maybe I'm just imagining it.

Are Arnie.d's any better than the Dark/Sega ones? Maybe a repost would be in order for those of us who don't have access to 600+ day old posts...

I was going to upload a torrent, but I started running out of HD space and ended up deleting it.

I still have a DVDshrink version of it I haven't burned yet if anyone's interested in that.

Info Wanted: Pre-'93 Japanese Special Collection LD transfers?

Screen captures from the 1992 Special Letterbox Collector's Edition VHSes:

Ep IV: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Smear-free-93/post/481961/#TopicPost481961

Ep V:

^ Somewhere between that last shot and this one, there was a bit of a drop in quality. It's getting harder to seperate the edges of the picture from the "black bars". Seems like this quality loss persists through the rest of the movie (and gets slightly worse).

Ep VI:

^ Example of framing and subs. The quality is a bit worse than ESB had been getting.

^ The quality improves! I can find the borders again!

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

You mean like the GOUT then ;)

Technically the GOUT was cleaned up, and that's why we hates it (we does) =(

My god, i can't believe the negativity here. It's only at a very early stage and people are saying how crap it's going to look.

I'm pretty excited. I figure if anyone can make it look pristine, we've got the best guys to do it right here on this board.

And judging by your example shots, I'd say my assumptions were pretty spot on.

Stunning.

I for one would like to see the raw scan released, so that we aren't locked into one interpretation of dirt cleanup and colour correction, but maybe that is asking too much right now.

I'm sure it'll happen, in the interest of preservation.

Film has a much larger spread than video cameras of being able to reproduce detail in bright areas and dark areas, and so one is always balancing whether to favor the details in the dark areas or the bright areas. The blowout of some of the whites in PG had nothing to do with white balance, and was more due to my trying to get people's faces to look as good as I could.

I finally got to watch the Puggo Grande and the whites do blow out a little bit, but I got some of the detail back when I dialed down the brightness in the program.

I might be way off the mark here, or you might already have considered this, but is there a way you could do like they do with HDR photography?Get one capture very bright, one very dark, one in the middle and layer them together?

I know you said you're already capturing at different settings, I didn't know if that's what you meant or not. But then again, trying to get them all to line up perfectly would probably take too long to do =/

In my current line of thinking (wild-ass educated guess) this Technidisc pressing LD and Asaki's 1992 widescreen VHS are likely the same transfer/master, and I'd suspect they're missing the same frames at reel changeovers, same 2:3 pulldown cadence, same cropping, etc...

I can do some screencaps if you like. My capture card's quality isn't the best, but I'll see what I can do.

The smear-free '93 colouring is making me think of the '92 vhs tape that I grew up watching; it seems very familiar in that way.

Did you read Asaki a few days ago, when he noticed the 2 burn marks in the Tantive corridor on his recently acquired VHS? Wasn't that a '92 too?

Yeah, I assumed he meant the '92 letterbox set (the one I have with burn marks).

What other set has the burn marks? When you first mentioned them, you referred to them as "our old friends".
