Info & Info Wanted: What are the BEST sources for EACH version of EACH movie ?
Time

Adywan did a color corrected reconstruction of the theatrical Phantom Menace using the UK DVD (less sharpening artifacts) and I believe the widescreen theatrical Laserdisc.

Hmm...maybe I was off a little. Don't remember him sourcing HD broadcasts.

Info Wanted: Is Netflix streaming a legitimate source for preservations?
Time

Moth3r said:

It should be possible (so long as the "analogue hole" hasn't been plugged), but obviously there are losses involved in re-digitising. A direct stream capture or a pure digital (screen capture) solution would be preferable.

Right, but as I said in another thread, with the low bitrates that Netflix streams at (especially a lot of the unpopular movies, and most TV shows), I can't imagine the quality loss would be noticeable at all.

Especially considering that the alternative is not being able to capture anything.

Look at the blurry edges around Han...

I assumed that was because they had to "snip" him out of the scene and composite him back in so he could step on Jabba's tail.

Or at least, that's the only reason that makes any sense...it doesn't look like that in the "Han deftly avoids Greedo's laser blasts" scene, does it?

OBITUARY - Star Wars Fullscreen/Pan and Scan versions. R.I.P.
Time

SilverWook said:

When DVD first hit the market, one of the features touted was the ability to pan and scan a widescreen movie on the fly. I've never encountered a disc that actually offered this though.

One of my friends had a DVD player that would automatically zoom and crop the picture to fill the whole 4:3 screen.

Unfortunately, we couldn't figure out how to turn it off =|

Info & Offer: Laserdisc, I have an X9 for use... if anyone wants to use it?

...wasn't it proven in the X0 thread that SW-on-LD sucks compared to the Gout? It was a while ago, but I remember some pretty disappointing-looking clips.

Yes and no.

The GOUT does have more horizontal detail, but every single LD (and even the VHS sets) has more vertical detail.

Not to mention there are DVNR-free pre-THX LDs, but I guess a lot of people find the GOUT to be perfectly watchable.

TV Shows on DVD ruined by music replacement or cuts/edits: Restoring them back to original state (a project) (Update: The Andy Griffith Show: Season 3 DONE)
Time

Unfortunately, Netflix has this thing where they don't let you stream every episode of a television series. At least a couple of episodes from each season will be grayed out and tell you you have to rent the actual DVD discs (in the mail) to watch them.

So unless they shuffle them around, or just happen to have only withheld episodes that were untouched on the DVDs, we've still got a few missing episodes.

Unless there are VHS/LD alternatives?

I've heard that the PAL DVDs are supposed to be unaltered too, but I've only read it on Wikipedia, so...

I have seasons 3 and 4, and I also noticed something else. I only checked episode 301, so I don't know if they're all like this, but it had this really weird sounding echo effect, like they held a microphone up to a TV to record it. I don't know if it had anything to do with the fake surround sound or what (was listening to it in stereo).

Hopefully if it is just a fake surround thing, there's a way to fix it with hardware or software, as opposed to reencoding the whole thing.

The Technidisc does look good, but I think it has a little too much yellow/red in it?

Sometimes, but the color fluctuates quite a bit from frame to frame, it's hard to capture it in a still.

You_Too said:

That technidisc version is oversaturated too.

It is, but in a good way...it's got this very "old 70s Technicolor film" feel to it.

...and the idea that future generations will not be able to see these essential films of american cinema just scares me.

You are obviously unaware of the fine preservation efforts we offer.

Not to mention, any old shmoe can get a used copy of pre or post THX in their favorite flavor on both VHS and Laserdisc (and post on DVD).
