I never understood why people do that.
Surely it's not some sort of secret magical legal loophole.

Looks like an awesome restoration project, though.
I thought I'd seen this one (on MST3K), but I must've been confusing it with something else. The movie I'm thinking of had Raul Julia in it, apparently it was "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank", which doesn't appear to be on IMDB??
You can get the "Stab" filter by itself: http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Stab

Now if there was only a way to completely remove smearing!
That's what I hate about projects like this: the screen caps always look so amazing, but then I remember that seeing it in motion is where the problem lies =/

We'll see if I do the Technidisc sometime, I still haven't downloaded that version yet.
Do it, I dare you.
Though, keep in mind, it does have a very Technicolor feel to it; personally, I wouldn't try to stray too far from it. The color also fluctuates from frame to frame quite a bit, I don't know if there's any "cure-all" fix for that sort of thing.

Ah man, I forgot this was Rar'ed. I don't know if I'll be able to help.
Yeah, same here, I seem to have misplaced the RAR file(s).

Yep.
There's still a surprising amount of people who don't notice, or don't think it looks that bad =|
I was showing a few people those stills from The Phantom Menace BD, and I got quite a few people who needed an explanation as to what was wrong with it >_<
I meant the GOUT.
Edit: Nevermind, you mean "the waxy look", right?

I'll never understand why the movie studios think they improve the picture with DNR and EE. It's horrible.
Believe it or not, the majority of the population does not notice how bad it looks.
Case in point, look at how long it took for anybody to notice it in Star Wars.
It took me a while before I realized the version they were playing in "From Star Wars to Jedi" was in English @_@

The HDTV Goldeneye has print marks that aren't on the UE and more grain but still has the tight framing.
Yeah, I was hoping, but then I compared the screen grabs. Odd that the print marks are different...does it still have the pan-and-scan intro credits?

Now you know what it's like to be a Jawa! ;)
Nice one.
So we were driving past the dumpsters the other day, and someone had left a mattress, a baby stroller, some other misc. baby things, and an R2-D2 sitting next to them. We hesitated for a bit, wondering exactly what the droid was, and then circled back around and quickly smuggled him into the trunk. Didn’t get a chance to look at him until last night.
Apparently he’s one of these, but in better condition: http://theswca.com/index.php?action=disp_item&item_id=23240
One of his “feet” is broken off (but most of it is included, could possibly be glued back together), but I’m not sure how many wheels are supposed to be there. I found one picture showing three wheels, but it looks like there are supposed to be four. This one only has two.
Can’t believe the things people throw away, sometimes =) Best part is, he still has that vintage toy chest smell.

There was "Metropolis: Morodered", and I believe that one is an LD transfer of the original Moroder version. I don't have that one.
I have an LD preservation of the Moroder version, but that wasn't the name of it. Looks like the BluRay is prettymuch the same, but also looks like a bit of restoration went on, judging from these screenshots: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Giorgio-Moroder-Presents-Metropolis-Blu-ray/28183/#Screenshots
There aren't any shots of the "creation", but you can see from this one shot that they did retain the multicolored segments: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=28183&position=7

...I'd be curious to see if the colour could be lifted and applied to the high-resolution blu-ray transfer with minimal effort.
I still don't understand why you guys want to do this. To me, it makes as much sense as using a perfectly transferred BluRay version of the OUT (hypothetically) to reconstruct Harmy's Despecialized.
Hmm. Judging by those screenshots, the unavailability of the Zion Hybrid, and the complete lack of answers to my question, I guess I'll just go with the Google Videos version (which appears to be the WMAR?).
Couldn't hurt, I'm sure someone would snatch it up.

The KCCI version is too dark and over-smoothed IMO - although it was the best quality available at one point.
So which one available today has the best quality?
GF and I talked about watching this last year, but never got around to it. Would love/dread to watch it this year (never seen it before).
Or maybe we'll just be lazy and watch whatever one is on Google Videos.

The original Moroder seems to be just colored in one color per scene (like the colorized Version of Murneaus Nosferatu) while the "Redux" seem to have some multi colored scenes.
The original has some multi-colored scenes too (like during the creation of Hel). From what I've seen, the Redux is supposed to be exactly like the original (only sourced from the remastered Kino version), but of course it isn't 100% perfect.
What's wrong with the BluRay?
From what I've seen I kind of prefer the SE colors. The UE is kind of soft and warm.
But then, I never saw the movie in theatres, so I wouldn't know. All I know is it's weird that they would crop it in the first place.
And the "accidentally released the pan-and-scan version" theory, I don't know how well that holds up...I was watching it in PowerDVD with the pan-and-scan turned on, and while it's true that the intro credits did fit perfectly onto a 4:3 screen, some of the subtitles elsewhere went off the edges of the frame...
But then I did read somewhere recently that a lot of 4:3 stuff was squished a bit horizontally to be able to fit more. But then why would they crop off the top and the bottom? Usually fullscreen stuff tries to get as much vertical picture as possible, so you see more.
I should probably not post so early in the morning, I know I'm just rambling now =)

Goldeneye and Tomorrow never dies would be welcome preservation the new dts mixes on the ultimate edition DVD's are not the theatrical mixes obviously.
What about the old Special Edition (of Goldeneye)? I've been thinking about picking that up, what with all the cropping going on in the UE, especially since I can't find a torrent of it anywhere >_<
I found one for the R2, but there's no hardburned subtitles, and the soft ones are really, really awful:

At the moment, I am trying to get a telecine transfer for the 8mm film, however I am exploring my options as I know of a business that could make a 1080p scan from the film but I would have negotiate with them since this isn't a 'home movie' and the price is very high. Any recommendations and help would be appreciated.
Did you ask Puggo?
I don't know if it would even be an improvement over his current ESB. I think a better print of ANH would be a bigger priority. Or any print at all, since IIRC, he said there are lots of good prints of the 81 version, but he wanted to preserve the 77.
...but one step at a time ;)
I always liked Empire a lot more when I was a kid (though I remember having seen Jedi more times), but I think I mostly loved it because of Hoth.
