Star Wars vs. A New Hope - Which do you say and why?

Or simply call it Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of The Jedi and so on. What’s so hard about that?

My point is that it should be A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of The Jedi and so on. Of course I’m not gonna say Star Wars before every title. What I’m trying to say is that Star Wars should be the all-encompassing title of the series, and each movie should have its own title.

Hayden as Anakin’s ghost. It doesn’t make sense for him to appear as an unscarred Shaw because he never looked like that.

Doesn’t make sense for Jacob Marley to appear in chains because he never looked like that.

Doesn’t make sense for Johnny Bartlett to appear as Death because he never looked like that.

Doesn’t make sense for whoever-the-hell-she-was to appear as whatever-the-hell-this-is because she never looked like that.

Doesn’t make sense for the Maitlands to appear as stretch-faced monsters because they never looked like that.

They’re ghosts. Ghosts can appear however the hell they want to appear.

Those are from other movies. Different rules apply. Both Yoda and Obi-Wan appear identical in ghost as they did upon their deaths, by this logic we should get a scarred quadruple amputee Anakin ghost like in the HISHE.

Anakin Starkiller - please refrain from creating new unnecessary multiple threads in the Star Wars Fan Edit section - especially as some of these threads could easily fit into your ‘My list of potential changes for my edits’ thread.

Thank you.

Sorry. I’m used to Reddit, where threads don’t stay in use longterm, and every topic gets a new post. It’s not just that, though. I find it more intuitive to have threads dedicated to ideas than those dedicated to edits. When a thread is dedicated to an edit, you have no way of knowing in advance what kind of changes will be discussed, whereas if we dedicate threads to ideas, you know exactly what you’re getting into, making it easier to find threads that interest you. All in all, adding completely new ideas to an old thread is just a foreign concept to me.

I’ll try to remember to do it this way in the future, if that’s what’s prefered. I get where you’re coming from. I won’t deny I make much more individual threads this way. That said, I haven’t noticed anyone else complaining…but you’re a mod, so I assume you know what you’re talking about.

the fact that we don’t end with Lando clapping has got to be worth something

Get on your knees and beg for forgiveness.

The idea that Lando clapping and the overall family photo look was too happy and perfect end on is actually one I got from here. Is it not popular? Anyway, I don’t have strong feelings towards it.

My thoughts on various changes

The Good:
-Hayden as Anakin’s ghost. It doesn’t make sense for him to appear as an unscarred Shaw because he never looked like that.
-Cloud City windows. They put the city in Cloud City, making it feel more big and open.
-Victory Celebration. As much as I love Yub Nub, Victory Celebration is better. It’s more melancholic and subtle than the unhinged upbeat attitude of Yub Nub, but I guess that’s not relevant.
-Other planets celebrating. It makes the victory feel truly significant.
-Ewoks blinking. While not exactly something we desperately needed, it’s still a welcome improvement.
-The Sarlaac’s extra tentacles. Being CGI allows them to move much more, giving the creature a much needed sense of being alive.

The Bad:
-Greedo shooting. Now I don’t care about the intricacies of what this does to Han’s character. My problem with it is how ridiculous it is that Greedo could miss his target from a meter away.
-Jedi Rocks. Not only is it awful, but I love Lapti Nek.
-Not keeping the original versions around. They have historical value.
-The Sarlaac’s beak. Turns what was a unique creature into a generic one that looks too much like the space slug.

The Weird:
-McDiarmid as the Emperor in TESB. It’s way better than the original, who looks and sounds nothing like Palpatine, but he is wearing his RotS makeup rather than his RotJ makeup. More importantly, though, the way his hood is arranged isn’t mysterious enough. Adywan did a much better version.
-The extra rock in front of R2 when he’s hiding from the Jawas. I guess Lucas thought he wasn’t well hidden, but adding the rock just makes us wonder how he even got there.
-Jabba in ANH. While it’s nice seeing this deleted scene restored, but given that it was, you know, deleted, it’s role in the story is already fulfilled by Han’s encounter with Greedo.
-Luke reunites with Biggs. While I do think this scene should be in the movie, it doesn’t work unless you also include Luke’s goodbye to Biggs, which is already a good scene in its own right. Should’ve restored that instead of the Jabba scene.
-Pointless line changes. Why? But really, why?

Star Wars vs. A New Hope - Which do you say and why?

To me, calling the first installment by the same name as the series as a whole is something that should always be avoided (I even call the original Legend of Zelda by its japanese name The Hyrule Fantasy). Given that we have been provided with an official title, I don’t see any reason not to use it. Not only is calling it Star Wars confusing (though admittedly only to non-fans), it’s awkward. You have Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and then just Star Wars? Or would you prefer Star Wars: Star Wars? Every entry in the saga has a subtitle. It seems counterintuitive for this one not to.

Idea: New Plotline - Luke's Sister
Time

I’ve kept the Dagobah scene, and just cut out the bit about Leia.

I don’t see why Luke would sense Vader when he’s already dead.

Moving the funeral pyre to the end is a good idea. I’ve heard the idea before (and for TPM) but was always indifferent to it. In this case, however, since the movie wouldn’t be ending with the celebration anyway, it might as well end with this.

As for Kylo, I have taken him into account, and came to the conclusion that he can just be a Vader fanboy without being his descendant. Sure, it might weaken his character a bit, but not by much. He’s still Han and Leia’s son, so there’s that.

Idea: New Plotline - Luke's Sister
Time

There’s an idea I have for my edits, but I’m starting to wonder if strays too far. I’m already removing Leia being Luke’s sister from my cuts. I could just remove all references to Luke having a sister (basically just her birth and the scene on Dagobah in RotJ). I could keep the other, and make it Vader, as one draft of RotJ (or so I’ve heard) did.

However, there is another option that would add a whole new plotline to the saga: Luke has a sister (not Leia), and he wants to find her. This was what was originally planned for the ST before Lucas decided to ditch it and wrap things up in RotJ (although I don’t see why he felt the need to make Leia Luke’s sister). Here’s how I’d do it.

The scene between Luke and Leia on Endor would be moved to the end, after the celebration, and be reworked into Luke telling Leia that he has a sister, and he’s gonna leave to look for her. Then Han shows up and hugs Leia and we cut to credits (while we’re at it, the fact that we don’t end with Lando clapping has got to be worth something). This way, the movie would still give closure, but leave the door more open for the ST to continue the saga.

Now for the ST. MAybe in TFA, Luke is off looking for her instead of in exile? Idk. Anyway, Rey turns out to be his niece, as her mother was his sister. Of course, we’d have to wait 'till Episode IX, by which point we’ll probably know everything we ever will about her canonical parentage, before working the details. While the changes to RotJ provide an excellent buildup, I worry about delivering a good payoff.

So what do you think? Does this stray too far? Does it add to the story in a meaningful way? Do you like chicken nuggets?

P.S.: Any ideas for what Luke’s sister’s name could be?

Yoda is a puppet, yoda is a cartoon. Ben Kenobi sounds like a fucking boss, Ben Kenobi sounds like a fucking synthesizer. The Emperor is a monkey, the Emperor is a human. Cloud City has no windows, Cloud City has windows. Lando says ‘attention’ once, Lando says ‘attention’ twice. . . .

I don’t get what you’re saying about Obi-Wan. Is it about changing the krayt dragon call? That, along with all the other changes you mentioned afterwards don’t count. The Emperor was only a monkey because they hadn’t cast him yet. Cloud City having windows is the result of better effects technology. The only thing in here that maybe counts is Yoda being CG in the Prequels. The thing is, all these things are changes to presentation, not narrative.

I don’t really care. All it really does is prove that George was wrong about Star Wars being some super big planned out epic. Turns out its just a serial, always more of the same. Beat one bad guy, move onto the next.

I don’t think it was ever a secret that he was making it up as he goes. Vader is Luke’s father? Leia is Luke’s sister? A second Death Star? Yoda wasn’t Obi-Wan’s master? Count Dooku is our villain now? I could go on and on.

STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

Most of the character problems are directly the result of kids show

Sabine not getting killed by Vader(in that cool sudden way)

Ezra not joining the dark side(thus making his character interesting).

Ezra was screwed either way. If goes dark, he’s too much like Anakin, but if he stays with the light, he’s too much like Luke. Honestly, he’s just a very bland character. Turning him to the dark side wouldn’t change that. He might have been a bit more memorable if they’d made him an alien like Ahsoka, but they couldn’t even do that. Of course, it wouldn’t fix the problem, but it would have been nice.

Might’ve mentioned but can’t search for own posts, maybe I can on this weirdly coded forum, but:
Should’ve been 2:35:1/2.4:1 i.e. OG OOT & The Clone Wars, don’t mind the Ralph McQuarrie inspiration for character and other designs, more multi-part episodes, less aimed to the kiddos, and I dunno what else.
Would’ve thought they might’ve had at least 6 or more seasons but they chickened out at 4.

They didn’t chicken out. They planned it this way from the start.

That immediately brings to mind how Marvel decided to skip Spiderman’s origin story this time around (not sure how true that is, since I haven’t seen Homecoming). We’ve the Jedi get wiped out and the villains rise before. Not saying we shouldn’t see it again, or that this was Disney’s reason for continuing the saga in the way they did. Just something it reminded me of.

Idea: A Fun Little Experiment: RotJ's Crawl in Green
Time

https://youtu.be/531GpUB2q2Q

I think we can all agree that recoloring the opening crawls of SW is a silly, superficial, and unnecessary change. That said, since it’s easy to do, I decided to give it a shot, just out of curiosity. I always associated this movie with the color green (my favorite color, actually), so I went with that. If there’s enough interest, I could do others, like RotS in red.
