How starwars went from great to garbage

I wish I could agree with you that the PT is not garbage, but I can't. I don't even feel remotely entertained when watching them.

I respect your opinion, I'm not forcing you to like them.

I was ready for a rational discussion about the merits of the prequel trilogy, and look what I find...

You won't find that on the internet. Every topic turns into a whambulance.

In this case, it was a whambulance from the very beginning.

The OT did get   mostly positive reviews when they all came out. I know cause I was there.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe in you.

The prequels are not garbage. Some parts of it are, as some parts of the OT are too, although they are much fewer. IIRC, TESB didn't received much praise at the time. At least it was not universally acclaimed as it is now. Not to speak of RotJ.

Anyway, as was said, this discussions have grown tiring. Specially with those RLM reviews, which are even more garbage than the movies they nitpick about.

I noticed that the TPM space battle scene shown in the documentary didn't received any kind of treatment. It was like the DVD version.

Yes, it has received the same treatment. The pink tint is gone and it also looks like Lowry have done the clean up because the colour of the engine glows have been almost lost, the same thing that happens in the 2004 OT set

What I meant was that scene was not sharp enough like the Mos Espa screenshot comparison you posted before.

I was just watching the ILM: Creating the impossible documentary and they showed a few scenes from TPM. Now this was presented in HD and this was definitely the new TPM transfer that will be on the Blu-Ray. The difference between the existing HD transfer (which is the same as the DVD transfer) and the new one is astounding.

They did a new transfer to add the CG Yoda. This was unveiled at the Star Wars concert tour. The colours are great, cleaned up picture without overdoing it and none of the edge enhancement (that i could see) that plagued the old transfer. It looked amazing and really showed just how little GL cares about the OT. Seeing a star wars episode looking so great and then switching to shots of the messed up versions of the OT was depressing

Yes, I was impressed too with TPM footage at Star Wars: In Concert. If there is a Blu-Ray movie worth buying, is that one.

Stop making fun of GL Adywan and stop saying the prequels are bad films they are not just episode 1 is.

Episode I is the best of the prequels. How can you say to people to stop saying the prequels are bad, when you did the same yourself about the best of them?

Stop milking the cash cow, Lucas. It's been bleeding for the past five years...

Has it? People keep drinking their milk. I never understood that problem. Let a new generation have Star Wars too.

Why does there have to be new Star Wars for a new generation to have it?  There's already plenty of Star Wars for this, the next, and every subsequent generation to be satisfied.

And who decides there's plenty? The movies are there for everybody, yes. But what's so wrong to give people (old or new) more Star Wars? I'm not talking about more movies, but everything else. If people buy it, it's because they like it. I still don't understand the "stop milking the cash cow" argument...

Seeing the Saga in order - a review by a first-time viewer....

However, for someone who's never before seen Star Wars, I'd have to say that there is only one way to show it to them:
  1. Star Wars (1977 or 1981 version)
  2. Empire (1980 version)
  3. Jedi (1983 version)
  4. Whatever the hell you want to watch after that, if any at all.

And my #4 means that, if after watching those three, they want to watch the prequels, great, go for it.  If they want to watch the 1997 or 2004 SE's, go for it.  If they want to watch the Clone Wars cartoon series (either one), go for it.

My point is, the originals should be seen first by anyone who's never seen the films.  That's how I watched them, and that's the only way they could be watched for 14 years.

Saying you should watch them in any other order is like saying you should read Brian Herbert's Dune prequels before you read Frank Herbert's original novel.  It just doesn't work.

Well said.

[Article] "It's Time to Forgive George Lucas"

Puggo - Jar Jar's Yoda said:

The reason for preserving the original movies is not because they were "better" than the more recent versions (either George's or Ady's).  The reason is because they are a part of film history, and represent the state-of-the-art for special effects (and other things such as editing) that won the relevent Academy Awards in 1977.

Also, as much as I enjoy Adywan's edit, I still prefer the original.

I understand that, and it’s why I refer not only to the Revisited edits but also to Ady’s Theatrical Reconstruction of ESB, which is an almost-exact reproduction of the original film.  It’s also why I ask whether there’s a Theatrical Reconstruction of ANH.

There should be a proper release of the originals, ideally in hi-def.  We are in agreement that there’s no legitimate excuse for not doing it and Lucas is being an asshole.  But the TR comes pretty darn close to recreating what Lucas chooses to keep from us, at least in the case of ESB.

I don't think so. As the guy who wrote the article, you are hitting a strawman. People may like the GL Special Editions better than the originals, or Adywan's edits better than both, but that's not the problem. And Adywan's edit is way more different than the original than the Special Edition of TESB. Don't get me wrong, I love Adywan's work so far.

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!
Time

skyjedi2005 said:

I say he has destroyed star wars.

The oot is all i want.  I will be stuck with a bad 1993 laserdisc port for my favorite film series. Even more insane he spent 30 million to covert episode1 for jar jar in 3-D, but he cannot afford to restore the real films that made star wars a classic of modern sci fi.

Converting episode one cost 5-10 million more than what fox spent to restore the entire trilogy from the negatives for the 1997 special edition.

Suppose a modern state of the art restoration costs a hundred million, even he could afford that being a billionaire.  I don't think it would cost 50, or sixty million.  For what it will cost to convert the special edition trilogy to 3-D 90 million, i think george could more than well afford it.

He can afford it, but doesn't want to because he is still the one who decides what to do with his money. He has other plans, and some people actually like TPM and Jar Jar, be it 2D or 3D. Deal with it.
