A.D. Anno Domini (1985) (* unfinished project *)
Time

While I’m working out this sync issue, here’s a clip from Anno Domini I just uploaded. One of my favorite scenes of all time. The Holy Spirit descends on Mary and the Apostles, giving them the word of God, while the Jewish holiday of Pentecost is celebrated outside. All of this is crosscut with a Roman crucifixion procession, accompanied by Lalo Schifrin’s rousing score.

Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, this is such a fantastic scene because of the way it was shot and edited. Honestly, this might be the best blocking I’ve ever seen, based on the massive scale alone. I love the way Mary lingers in the Upper Room, and the camera just holds onto her for a few extra seconds. Then the symbolic long shots down the dark corridors and into the light. Then the sweeping shots of masses of people spontaneously moving through arches and down stairs and the across the square.

This is one of the special moments in this miniseries that makes it more than worth preserving.

Happy Easter everyone!

For me, Rogue One is the installment that best fits with Star Wars77.

I think you just broke Alderaan’s brain.

Anchorhead doesn’t bother me. He doesn’t try to pretend the films are anything other than what they are, and he just likes one kind and doesn’t like the other. Anyone is free to like what they like, how can I argue with that? I also have no beef with people who readily admit the prequels are bad movies but they still like them anyway.

But if you come in here and want to debate that a poorly made, flawed film was actually well made or didn’t have plot holes or whatever, then sure we will have a lively discussion.

You’re right actually. If you dislike TFA and Rogue One because of reasons XYZ that’s fine but there are people who hate those films because because of reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the films themselves. It stands the reason that someone who is grown should be able to not let outside shit influence their opinions but I just don’t know anymore.

I can only speak for myself. I dislike the Disney movies and think they are bad movies for legitimate filmmaking and screenwriting reasons. But if that were it, they would just be bad movies and who cares.

The problem is Disney bought Star Wars, and is turning it into the dancing Vader disco nonsense, giving us the finger when we ask for the OOT, and instead pulling these bait and switches.

You want the OOT? What’s that? Don’t you mean you really want to watch a trailer for our new movie? Yeah! Ok 😃

To add to what crissrudd is saying, I feel like waiting another three years has other advantages for Lucasfilm aside from just the rights issue.

Some people are only just now getting around to buying the 2011 set. I honestly feel like we weren’t going to see a major reissue with actual new content until the time came to put the movies out on the next format. We’re only a year into 4k discs being a thing, and Star Wars has taken a long while to hit each new format.

To me, this is yet another sign pointing to 2020.

Mmm, this sounds awfully familiar. Before celebration the 40th anniversary was the most logical time for a release. Now that it doesn’t seem to pan out, things are pointing to 2020.

I don’t want to pessimistic, but from what we know from Mike Verta’s interactions with Disney, info from Disney’s restoration people, and Pablo Hidalgo, releasing the OOT is not a priority. So, there certainly seem to be no plans for a release in 2020, or otherwise. It appears to simply not be on the agenda, at all.

Hopefully, Mike Verta’s pitch has happened, and has set things in motion. However, I very much doubt Disney and Lucasfilm will have their own plans. There’s a new 4K restoration for ANH for sure, conformed to the SE. So, a new 4K mastered SE release may be pending, with some additional material, such as the Tarkin footage shown at celebration, but an OOT release seems unlikely, unless Mike Verta can convince them of the merits of his restoration.

I have not seen the original versions in almost seven years. There is no way in hell I am waiting another three years AT LEAST to see them again. I would take back everything bad I have said about TFA and RO if Disney releases the originals this year. Otherwise I can’t tolerate this carrot and stick approach any longer.

I’m not going to lie…like a year ago this post would have gotten me mad but now I revel in the fact that someone…anyone who hates the new K-Canon films admits that they have an irrational hatred of them that their opinion is not based on the quality of the movies themselves. Yeah, knowing this is a fact prematurely is nice but confirmation is better. Thank you.

Dislike of **** movies and hatred for them are different things. Regardless of what Disney does or doesn’t do with the OOT, some of us, maybe many of us, are still going to think their **** movies are **** and not any good. That doesn’t mean we would necessarily hate them, because in a vaccuum, there is no need to hate bad movies. They are merely bad.

The animosity comes from two things, however:

  1. Disney continues to stiff us on the OOT, while continuing to shill for their **** films that aren’t any good. Without a doubt, if they simply released the OOT, the criticism would die down. The Disney movies would no longer be movies that are standing in between us and the OOT, or movies they are offering us instead of the OOT–they would just be bad movies we no longer care about either way.

  2. The exception to that rule is when they start fucking with Star Wars. The original characters, the spirit of the original trilogy, that kind of stuff is not to be tainted with. Give us new characters, give us new stories that keep in spirit with the original. That’s all good. Just don’t fuck with the originals, which is even more egregious now, because they don’t even have a set story anymore. They are diverting the series from the archetypal to the episodic. It’s just a bunch of TV writers sitting around and coming up with the next idea out of their ass and passing it off to the next guy. At that point, it’s no longer a story with a meaningful message to tell, it’s just situational melodrama, meant to distract the bored.

While Lucasfilm was once again letting us down at celebration, we were on family vacation hitting up a couple national parks. One of our stops was Death Valley. While it wasn’t the thrust of our trip there, I did take advantage of the chance to see a few of the locations used as parts of Tatooine. Kinda cool that it coincided with the 40th anniversary.

I tried to make it look like we were sand people, rather than just doing black blobs over our faces. But I’m working with the iPad photo markup tool… so…

Below is Golden Canyon, one of the locations used to film the Jawas capturing R2.

Great post humdinger. Thanks for sharing.

I find it quite amusing that the more you talk, the more you reveal your true motivations for stirring up the pot. You think the prequels are some of the worst films ever made and that the op is just a ‘prequel troll’, simply because he enjoys the films, so he’s lower than you because that’s wrong.

He’s a prequel troll because look at his user name. Look at his brief posting history. When someone signs up on a forum called Original Trilogy and their posts are all about prequels, and nothing to do with the original trilogy or preserving the original trilogy, I think it’s fair to believe they are posting in bad faith.

Even then, I simply laughed at Fang’s ironic comment. And when the troll got hostile, you saw his comment as a cue. Like a dog hearing the food pour into its bowl, it didn’t matter who was posting or what the topic was about, an attack on a user you don’t like was your cue to bandwagon and further attack a user you don’t like. A few of you do it over and over again, jumping from thread to thread.

If you don’t like someone criticizing a movie you like, then ignore it. Stop crying like a baby and grow some thicker skin.

Most especially, stop making up paranoid comments and insinuations out of thin air.

Re-work the site so it's main focus is not about fan editing or preservations entirely.
Time

I can only speak for myself, but I don’t think this is a Star Wars forum. It’s not a Star Wars fan site. Many of us came here out of a desire to see the original films preserved and restored. Apparently, some people are only here because it’s yet another place they can discuss STAR WARS. Originals, prequels, sequels, SEs, EU, they don’t care…they just love STAR WARS and want to talk about more STAR WARS. The goal of preserving and restoring the original films is either unimportant to them, or it would merely be nice because it’s more STAR WARS.

Of course that stuff is going to get talked about in the appropriate places, but I think you’re off-base OP if you think this is supposed to be a Star Wars fan forum. Some of us don’t even like Star Wars anymore, outside of preserving the original films.

The only reason you found the OP “ironic” is because they held a view contrary to yours, and you picked on them.

Your imaginary conversation skills are on display once again. I quoted Fang Zei and laughed at his comment. I didn’t even address the OP before you started in. In fact, I presume you are supposedly on this site out of an interest in preserving the original trilogy, and yet the moment a prequel troll made an aggressive comment towards me, you saw that as your cue to jump into another thread and try and take another shot at a person you dislike.

This is something that 4 or 5 of you do on a regular basis to several posters.

Otherwise, you just look childish, going from one thread to the next, complaining about me.

Well, nobody complains 'till you show up, take a big, fat, steaming shit in the middle of the thread, then expect everyone to respect and applaud you for it. You came here specifically because the thread was about a prequel and wanted to bully people like the OP who likes the prequels. In every new thread you don’t suddenly become a blank-slate entity that has absolutely no previous history or reputation on this site, so screaming “LOOK AT MY POSTS IN THIS THREAD, I DINDU NUFFIN” does absolutely nothing.

Wrong. You need to read the thread again apparently. I made one post, laughing at another user’s ironic comment. Then you did what the same 4 or 5 of you always do, you followed someone you dislike into a thread, and tried to pick a fight with me for no other reason than you dislike me. It’s childish.

After you improve your reading comprehension, and stop attributing things to people they never said, you should work on growing up.

Are you inferring imaginary things in your head again?

The post history in this thread is very short, so it should be easy enough for you to reread and see that … once again … as has happened in many threads now … I never said the things you have attributed to me.

The Empire Strikes Back along with other Star Wars material have shown that Star Wars can be far far more than what it was originally conceived to be. I refuse to adopt that mindset but it’s fine if you do.

You’re confusing different with good.

There are several posters here who complain every time they see the word “rehash”, and then when they see criticism of something “not Star Wars”, they are quick to follow with accusations of “make up your damn mind!”

Something can be different and try new things and still be in the same spirit as the original. The Empire Strikes Back fits that category. It was Star Wars, but it was more Star Wars, and the spirit of the story was still the same as the spirit of the original, even if it explored more complex emotions and conceits.

On the other hand, something can be different from the original, and can be conceived in a spirit that is entirely counter to the original. Midichlorians in the prequels is an example of this latter category. It took a conceit from the original movies, went in another direction with it, but that direction was against the very spirit of what the originals stood for.

It is not good to do a rehash. It is good to give us a new story. However, it would be extremely not good to give us a story that spits in the face of everything the original trilogy stood for.
