Thinking of Fantasy Movies that came out during the OT
Time
True. But myself, I think Jar Jar and threeepio are needed for fun comic relief. since the story gets much more serious and depressing later on, I think it's best to have some fun wqtih these characters. I think that's what Lucas had in mind as well. I highly doubt that the's the money hungry guy somw paint him as. He's just out to tell his story thre way he wants it told. Jar Jar just sounds like something he thought was a cool idea for comic relief and he went with it. I don't see why he gets so much hatred just for that. And I mean, come on, didn't Lucas meet you half way when he reduced Jar Jar's role significantly, and made Jar Jar the idiot to help Palpatine be Chancellor?

It's the same thing with the Ewoks in ROTJ. Lucas used ewoks because he thought it would be good for the story. He needed a primitive race. He knew he couldn't use wookiees, so what was he to do? If he made a species similar to wookiees, everyone would say it was a copy of his idea of wookiees. So... to paraphrase Lucas "he chopped the wookiees in half, and they became ewoks." I don't think it was for marketing purposes. Yeah, I know kids loved them, but I just can't see Lucas sacrificing his "vision" for cash.

The Wookiee planet scenes are there to further enforce the fact that there is a war going on. Plus, it acts as a plot point to have Yoda away from Coruscant, just as the Utapau scenes were partly a plot point to have Obi-Wan away from Coruscant as well.

Like Lucas has said, "you can't please everyone." For example, there are some who have complained because so little of the Clone Wars are shown in the films as it is.

Changes you want (or don't want) to the 2007 archival editions

No. Everyone who sees that scene reallizes that there is an explosion taking place. My point was that, although I fully reallize an explosion is taking place, it takes me out of the movie because it looks rather fake. Plus, in the Alderaan explosion, there is a jump cut in the original version which doesn't help anything IMO.

Now we all have our opinions, but don't be insulting me because I prefer the SE version of the scene. You don't insult me, I don't insult you, I think it's a fair trade.

That whole fuel room scene, to me, is useless, and makes things more complicated than they should be at the beginning of ROTS, and it makes that entire opening sequence too long. And, I really don't think the Yoda scene on Dagobah would work, since it would confuse a lot of people with Kashyyyk. Plus, I think that only the first of the three rebel alliance scenes should be put back in, so that you are given a hint of what is to come, without throwing in the entire subplot of the petition of the 2000.

That first Rebel Alliance scene is important because it sets up two major plot points for ANH:

1. Bail Organa and Mon Mothma have set up the Rebel Alliance
2. Palpatine has set up regional governors

and "Revenge of the Sith" had a small one, but it was very minor: one scene transition was a wipe theatrically and it's just a straight cut on the DVD.

I'm still wondering why? Why change such an insignificant thing? Was Lucas so happy with the entire film (hard to believe) as is, but this lone transition stuck in his craw that it had to be changed for home video?

I still don't think he's happy with it. I'm sure he'll make some changes as Rick McCallum hinted for the 2007 archival editions.

rotj sucks now because of the PT?

I actually took a look at this scene a while back for the guys over in the SW preservation forum doing the "saga" edit.

The best bet for Lucas, if he wishes to fix this mess for the 2007 "archival" editions would be this plan of action:

1. In ROTJ, delete Luke's line of "I have no memory of my mother." As a test, I edited the scene so that the line is removed, and it works surprisingly well without it. In fact, it makes it appear as if Luke does remember his mother, but that he is only asking Leia.

2. In ROTS, re-edit the Padme death/Luke and Leia birth scene so that Leia is born first, and make it appear that she is the one who spends the most time with her mother and is with her at death.
