...Wow is all I can say... honestly, when I heard the choir and strings melody when Luke charges out to confront Vader for the last time... I got shivers down my spine! A serious well done, can I ask how you managed it? What software did you use? I honestly don't know how you managed to get such clarity from such... rubbish.

I'm glad to hear you on this cue! As I said, this rubbish as you call it, as a good or would I say a great potential for remastering. Don' t trust what you see, nor what you hear ;).

The main softwares I used are 1). My ears 2). My feelings !... though the 1) and 2) may invert during the process :). A third point I noticed that would go with the ears is a good memory of the sound, because you won' t hear the same thing with your headphones while remastering than on your Hi-Fi ect... As 7FN said on the previous thread: one must be sure it will really improves the sound, not just give him a beautiful "look" or design.

Otherwise it's a secret.... A disappointing one! Lol! However, I worked step by step (making pre-remasters) and it asked to be well planned. And last but not least, I took all the time it needed.

(RSO ESB) The one problem is that some tracks have pops or hiss or a crackle.

I forgot them quite fast. It is not a problem... But should you say "my problem..."?! :) Anyway, thanks for the comments.

Thanks guys !... And take your time to explore this stuff. I'm especially curious to know how far the remasters of ESB and ANH make a difference to your ears... The changes are a little more subtle than they are for RotJ I think.

@ Beatho: Ok, thanks. I'm about to make this mention in the first post... So, was this Lightsaber Duel the "icing on the cake" as you expected? (Big smile on my face).

THE OT SOUNDTRACKS SALVAGE - SWESBROTJ -"remastered"(so far)+ LP's (Released)

Hi,

This topic is dedicated to the preservation efforts of two people, presented here together.

THE 7FN RSO ANH & ESB LP’S TRANSFERS (PURE VERSIONS)

Let me first introduce the work of Seventiesfilmnut (7FN), who had the generosity despite what he was going through, to achieve his work and ship it by airmail to the galaxy where I live!

Indeed I received from him both his transfers of the RSO Recordings LP’S of STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK wich he originaly made in 24bit / 96khz ( … 2x2,5GB… Please don’ t ask for it !).
Here is presented for convenience the 16bit/44khz versions in Flac Format as a 2CD set, with a restoration of the original covers in 300dpi resolution, from high quality arts.

I won’t discuss the sound quality here: this topic has been made to let us know about your experience of it. 😉 Just be aware that the sound has been cleaned by 7FN, but not as much as you would call it “pristine”. I am however a purist myself regarding the sound, but in the way such as these kinds of details are part of the pleasure.

A lot of thanks 7FN !!! This set really captures the true substance of Star Wars in all its simplicity !

THE OT REMASTERED SCORES (ANTHO+SE’S)

The second object to be related in here is my own restitution effort of all the three original trilogy scores through remastering. Its goal was to bring back most of the sound qualities the original transfers may have given before they were hidden trough the desastrous Special edition and the average Anthology, though I’m not a specialist to these scores in particular (refer to Goodmusician’s “complete scores” thread for detailled infos about this mess… ).

Let’s be clear on what it is expected to be found in these recordings:
You may find more dephts, unexpected details and clarity compared to the CD’s you already own. Some around have already experienced RotJ from this set and were amazed and very happy with the result. It is to be said I don’t cheat with any software effects and don’ t use any other way than equalization, what leads me to the following point…

By enhancing the qualities of what the source may be, it was obvious that it enhanced its faults too as some hiss and rare cracklings from the master tapes (RotJ), or a few noisy saturation in the highs -rarely too- (“Luke Pursues The Captives” on ESB). But listen to carefuly the same track on the Anthology and you’ ll hear that yet, the remastering was dealing to hide such unrepairable faults.

ESB has also a lot of cuts that you will hear easily with headphones, as you will on the RSO recording version besides.

… These last points are part of the scores though, and are noticed to your attention as a warning for some “perfection” runners who would dream of something completely glossy without a fault.
The main challenge of these remasterings was to give the best as possible the same temper to all the cues on one entire score, what I consider in the end, and despite a couple tracks remaining quite flat on ESB and RotJ, successful enough to be truly worthy of interest. I didn’ t want to use any “normalization” filter, so all the volumes have been equalized one by one to fit all together.

REMASTERING NOTES & INFOS:

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE

(From the ANTHOLOGY, the SPECIAL EDITION + some tracks from GoodMusician’s 3CD set)

First I’d like to thank GoodMusician for allowing me to share my version of this one: I asked to him twice, and in my country a silence equals a Yes ! 😃 Indeed, I borrowed some of his tracks for their clean ending + some extra tracks you’ll find on CD2.

However I considered all of this needed to be remastered too and notably the highs of the cues wich belong to the score to be calm down. Please, note that this is only my opinion that I share to inform on what I did…

This score was the easiest of the three to work with because it has not been as “butchered” as the others. But there was still work to do with it. Between others, your ears will probably thank me not to be blown away by the trumpets, far too high on all the versions I heard before, excepted on the RSO recording.

I hope you’ll forgive and forget the mistake I made while editing “The Walls Converge” to have the clean ending: the volume of the four last seconds is to low. Otherwise, it seems all good to me.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
(From the ANTHOLOGY + the SPECIAL EDITION)

Here is a score that was very difficult to deal with, due to a certain lack of flexibility in its sound. It is to be said I wasn’ t satisfied with the result until I’ve heard the RSO transfer from 7FN, though its qualities remain at a different level.

The RSO provides a strong consistency and clarity for instruments like flutes and triangle what is not the case of my version where they are more “hidding” behind. However, the real surprise is that my remastered version brought sounds that are nearly absent on the RSO, as for archers stroke on cellos on some cues for exemple, and even gratings from the musicians chairs during many silences. This one version has finally a far better dynamic, more relief, warmth and depth than the previous CD releases. I would be very curious to know what listeners may think about it…

Be sure I made nearly all that I could to give it the best.

RETURN OF THE JEDI

(From the ANTHOLOGY + the SPECIAL EDITION)

On the contrary of all of what people may think, write and observe about this one through the so poor CD releases we all know, I noticed this score had, excepted for a very few tracks, a very strong and interesting potencial for remastering, what was not obvious at first glance.
With this one I somehow have the feeling to have “undone” what the SE’s and Anthology had done. I don’ t know if it is the best result of all the present scores, but it is my best work on them anyway and possibly the more surprising… I leave it to your appreciation.

Note: No “Parade Of The Ewoks” concert version on this set.

As the previous set, all of it is available - and only - in Flac format.
All covers are included (Style A, B or C posters digitally restored in 300dpi).

How to get it:

I rely now on people who would have found in these versions of the scores what they waited for so long - if they did - , to be kind to preserve and share them again for the ones who will be willing to give a listen (Beatho is already OK for taking care of it, see post below. Just PM him).

The set is also foundable on the alt.binaries.starwars thanks to ryanvb.

You may also try this temporary key 😉

Please note that once you get them, they’re yours ! It is useless to ask me if you may share them by torrent, to post them elsewhere, to use them for your edit etc… The answer is already YES !

My only wishes may be:

 • That you give feedback on the actual topic to keep it alive and preserve it from beeing forgotten in the dephts of the forum. Just be generous: let people know it exists.

 • That you give credits to 7FN RSO transfers (present on the infos.txt).

 • That you keep the burning infos that are important for the 0 sec pause tracks on the remasters.

 • That you fully enjoy this whole set !

PLEASE !.. We’re not machines ! Thanks to formulate your request with more than two words (= minimum of politness.

Also check this topic: RE-SCORING EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - THE 1980 FILM VERSION SCORE !

Help Wanted: Original Scores - Resquest for the RSO SW & ESB 2-LP VYNIL SETS audio form for remastering work (completed in March 2009)

I finally made my mind for it. Both the RSO and my remastered 2CD's versions from the soundtracks are uploading right now, and I' ll introduce them in a thread for both of them. Watch it out this week-end.

The RSO recording versions I choosed to post are the pure versions (untouched).

The problem of this actual thread is the title... It is not a search any more ! ;) ... And there's so few to remaster on Seventiesfilmnut's recordings that I' m now more in the idea to share the pure versions.

@ Beatho - I may start a new topic to present my scores, giving the right warnings about them (I mean for those who think you can hide every loss, like a painter would hide the underlay ! Dreams of perfection !!!). I can upload them to Megaupload and share the links by PM and rely on you to make it so, but once the links will be over I won' t upload again.

Then I would rely on you and on any people who would be kind to preserve and share the links again. I' m sure there will be always a person present from time to time on the topic to help others, as some did for me on Adywan's edit topic. Whatever it is shared by torrent or other ways, I don' t mind. I don' t ask for special credits neither: I' m just passing through, like anyone on the Internet ;) However, I will be calling that the XS versions at least for the topic because of the logo I put on my backcovers. But mostly credits to 7FN for the LP's will be appreciated, especialy if it is shared outside the place.

I'm going to prepare this for soon, the time for me not only to upload, but to find my remastering notes, and to find the right words to tell what is to be. Cheers !

Beatho, what is this PM in your box ? ;)

Have to say, this is sounding amazing guys! And although I really can't wait for your remastered scores ABC, I would also like the original LP recordings as I'm a bit of a collector. I don't mind uploading them myself if you can get them to me somehow. I could either torrent it, as I've got a pretty good repor on demonoid.com, or possibly FTP.

Obviously all credit would go to you, I would make it very clear that I was simply a host! :)

You just give me an idea... Would you like to conduct the new topic for this remastered set ? Time is the reason I haven't make any for these scores. But first you have to listen one of them to see if you consider it is worth ;).

Agreed. As told by PM, my tiny correction on your ESB transfer was to give a little wideness to the sound and a bit dynamic to the highs. My Sennheiser headphones really don' t improve the aesthetic of the sound, so it preserves me from beeing caught by a "wrong sense of beauty", or "power". My hi-fi is a Marrantz player with a Sansui amplifier, and the speakers are Phillips F9412 three driver system. However I use to compare my work on both a cheap mini player and the other computer I have, sometimes. I tend to remain honest considering the result.

However, I may post your original 16bit transfer if you or anyone here prefers. Any of the two version worth the listen anyway - there's no such a difference ! ;)

Would anyone tell me what is better between Flac and Ape ? (I use to think it is Ape, but I may be mistaken).

Define "better"? They are both lossless, so identical in audio quality.

Well, I'm thinking about the way the encoding is working... I thought there may be a difference because it happened many times that the Flac files I downloaded had some saturation (basses mostly). Ape files are always perfect, and you can choose the degree of compression quality (high or extra high etc...).

tlbauerle said:

Might I suggest FLAC. It seems to be the more popular and that was the feedback I had doing SYMPHONY FOR A SAGA.

I'm totally interested in what you can remaster. How much tape his and other pops can you clear from an LP rip?

I won' t clear anything, bud ! I' m not of the kind who wants all perfect without a pop. Just let me tell you the guys who work the SE's for exemple, tried to hide a lot of faults and in the same time have hidden all the qualities of the original sound. I beg you to hear this one thing: my work only targets to unreveal all that was hidden!!! I always stopped playing RotJ ten minutes after the beginning because it was too much efforts to stand this poor sound. Now I can listen and appreciate it in its entirety and play it again once it is finished ;) I mean since I remastered them: it is really the first time I listen these scores in their entirety. I use only equalization for my remastering, no noise reduction, no stereo enlargement (though my equalizations take care of that) because I want to hear the sound the closest as it looks to be at the origin. All have been remastered track by track, never isolated parts, though sometime I had to cut a track into pieces (rarely) when it was obvious it was the reunion of different pieces with different sounds. In this case, I inform when there are 0's pause tracks for burning if the cut doesn't use any fade. But don' t worry, I didn' t buchered the scores.

You may learn to apreciate these scores in their own juice (as we say in France). ;) The biggest problem I encountered was a saturation of the highs on the track "departure of Bobba-Fett" from the ESB anthology. Just give a listen to the original: you will hear it, hidden by the way it has been remastered, but here however. You will notice it quite better on my remaster... So bit !

PS: Different commentaries about RotJ:

- From Possessed: "Wow... I haven't listened to them all yet but what I've heard so far is fantastic! The clarity and high end sound of the 1997 special edition soundtracks but with the warmth and depth of the 1993 set... great work!"

- From DarthBo: "I still haven't had the time to listen to everything, but what I've heard is amazing. I've heard instruments I never knew were there. Thank you so much for that!"

- From 7FN: "Have listened to the first CD - great work!!! It sounds alot better this way :) Just one thing I think the Main Title needs a BIT more bass? Just a bit, but the rest sounds perfect!"

... Only Adywan was bothered by hiss and cracklings (and I guess, as he listened to only the last part of the download at this time, he was talking about "Darth Vader's Death" track wich is a hard one... He didn' t explained so far).

I downloaded Episode IV and Noticed that Episode V and VI were missing on your site GoodMusician.

I would like to hear them and see what fixes you made to the botched special edition cd releases, you know music missing on empire strikes back, and return of the jedi. Sound channels reversed or poor mixing.

Return of the Jedi had a bad frequency response on the 2 CD edition i have read because of dnr.

To me Jedi was the biggest dissapointment out of all the 2 CD releases in 1997. The sound quality for a score recorded in 1983 is just plain apalling, even 1977 star wars sounds better. And Lapti Nek and Yub Nub were missing from the cds and replaced with jedi rocks and some new celebration music.

In my opinion i wish the scores for star wars and indiana jones were treated better with all the music presented and uncut.

Return of the Jedi's original session tapes were found and still have not been transfered and released to CD.

I have remastered Return of the Jedi, and so the other ones. I still don' t know about GM's ones, but I can tell you my Rotj had the congratulations of a couple of dudes around... I've restored the sound such as it is perhaps now the best of the whole bunch, despite some anavoidable but not disturbing faults (some rare crackles and hiss that may however be unoticed).

I plan to open a new topic to share my OT remastered scores... However RotJ has been uploaded yet. Just PM me.

@ GOODMUSICIAN : do you mind if I share my ANH remastered score, knowing that I borrowed you some tracks (for the uncut endings) + some of your extra tracks that I remastered too ? Thanks.

Help Wanted: Original Scores - Resquest for the RSO SW & ESB 2-LP VYNIL SETS audio form for remastering work (completed in March 2009)
Time

I've received the very good transfers from 7FN this week. Great sound.

In an other hand it made me notice that the work I did with my remastered ESB (anthology + SE) is pretty good too.

I have to say the idea to upload the 24bit transfer doesn' t make me really enthousiast (too huge - 2x 2,5GB) mostly when i think only a couple of dudes will have interest and courage for such an download. Then, what I'd like to propose for compensation would be to upload my entire re-remastered OT collection in lossless 16bit form:

- Remastered from the anthology + SE's:

.STAR WARS

.EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

.RETURN OF THE JEDI

- From the 7FN LP's (They are more "corrected" than "remastered"... a bit nothing)

.STAR WARS

.EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

... I may start a new topic for this stuff. I' ll come back to this page in a couple of week to check your feelings about it. Anyway, I may say that this collection is of a quality easily above what has been released in the commercial area.

Would anyone tell me what is better between Flac and Ape ? (I use to think it is Ape, but I may be mistaken).

Help Wanted: Star Wars / Empire Strikes Back - 24-bit LP preservation - request for help
Time

Off-topic: I sent to John my own remastered version for RotJ (complete) and I got congratulations from him. I won' t open a new topic for it because I probably won' t take time to follow it, as to discuss it. However if anyone is interested, just PM me for the links... I give full autorisation to anyone who wants to torrent it, topic it, or whatever ! ;) Indeed it was a huge work and it would be a mess that so few people got it while almost everyone paid for the poor commercial SE. Notice that my files are in APE format and artworks in 300dpi (at last ! the original posters as covers ! :) ) are included.

Do you think you could release this as a dual DVD-Video/Audio and standard CD set? I'd love to have both (the CD mainly to listen to with my iPod when I'm reading on the train and whatnot).

Allow me to remind you this topic (see my signature)... So we can consider it will be done by John or by me ;) !

I don' t know if such score will need to be remastered, unless if there' s a way to compensate the lost from the 24 to the 16 bit version, in term of power for exemple. We' ll see. However we agreed with John that I' ll care for the upload because of his connexion... Unless he plans to ship the score to anyone interested! :)

By the way, should I keep the original track order, or should I make it match with the original score order? For now I' m in the idea to keep the records order. Any suggestion... ?

... Artworks are ready yet.

;) All the best !

Star Wars Prequels/Original Trilogy: The Complete Scores (Released)
Time

Ooh... I should have been more precise: I was talking about the ANTHOLOGY. Fortunately when both are combined to remake the score, only a few SE cues remain...

Do you remember wich tracks have their stereo flipped ?

I' m quite sure all the violins are on my left on about the 20 first tracks. Though, I have to give a listen to my CD2 now.

... And yes, it is sad.

EDIT: Oh wait... It seems that "Departure of Boba Fett" has been inverted...
