Good stuff.
Good stuff.

OK, I hate to be a pain with constant posting of more problems but I’ve just been re-watching the Space Battle of Endor a few times and I’ve come up with a wonderfully unrealistic wish list of fixes.
The effects suffer from bad lighting and color shifts due to the way they were composed.
On top of that you have a terrible BlueRay grading that makes everything flat. Look at the original trailer.
The space scenes are much darker and look immediately better: https://youtu.be/p4vIFhk621Q?t=102
I think that the only thing fixable is grading. 1983 effects are what they are…

I tried turning a still of the Death Star into “3D” using a displacement map to make it look like it was turning slowly and it seems like it could be pretty convincing.https://vimeo.com/360161256 (password: fanedit)
Great stuff 😃 Perhaps even better if you pan it to the left it a bit while rotating.
I think the Maiden disguise is so obvious that it needs no explanation.
Amidala switches places with her maiden frequently for security reasons.
Qui-Gon’s expressions makes it obvious, but he goes with it. So should do the same 😃
So you can cut the reveal to the Gungans. They appear because the Queen asks Jar Jar to bring them. That also gives Jar Jar a reason to be in the movie 😉

I don’t think the Empire is an “equal opportunity” kinda regime…
Second that. The Empire = Nazis (even the uniforms have the same color).
So those guys must all look the same.
You only get some diversity with the First Order 😉
Looks good, colors are well matched. Quite good for what it is 😉

The Death Star has been in orbit for minutes. Maybe they all understood what was going to happen (Bail went back to Alderaan to inform them about the DS), and they are panicking.
Good! So show the Death Star in orbit (Rogue One footage), as an establishing shot before we go to Tarkin and the Princess perhaps. That would give the people time to assemble 😉
The Naboo city shot feels disconnected. Why are people assembled ? We don’t see the explosion hitting the city.
But keep it up I like where you are going!
Less blue. The less we notice the better. Don’t repeat Lucas SE mistakes 😁
Great work on the shield.
- Making the style not clash with the material, making a bad pan&scan.
Don’t take me wrong, but for me about half of your examples (2, 4, 6, 8, 9) look cropped.
The framing looks off, with the interest points too close to the edge of the frame.
Sorry for the necroposting, and please move this to a better thread if needed 😉
Has anyone done color correction using the stills as reference ?
From my tests it’s doable and it looks much better.
Is there any interest in this ?
Here’s an image that shows how off colors are (current at top, reference frames at bottom):
Another question: any stereo source for the music ?
How about going from the window jump directly to the foot chase using a wipe ? You can use Anakin holding to the drone as you wipe. We get that the drone is taking him back to Zam…
Thanks for the comments. Yes, focusing on the main heroes is always better, so the bunker struggle feels more intense like this.
There are a few more things I’d like to try, such as adding the original Jaba’s palace entrance arch.

It ended up on TFA, so there’s some usable footage there 😃
I also need to show Luke’s hand waving while 3CPO is telling the story 😉
But I haven’t located any usable footage yet.
And it would be nice to show the Empire retreating to hyperspace after the Death Star is destroyed…
But no rush, I’ll get to it eventually.

This is some of his work, it’s phenomenal.
Not bad but the camera work is nothing like ROTJ. Unless you replace all of the effect shots it will not blend, in my opinion.

It’s so funny that you bring this up, because I’ve been working on a montage scene like this for the past week, and I’m posting up a rough edit now. …
The problem here is continuity regarding places and characters. But yes, some fan films might work. I’ve tried having the rebels fake capture using fan film footage (see my thread) and it can work.

Any advice to help make the final product all blend seamlessly…
It’s hard to blend because the cinematography is different, specially CGI.
My best advice is to work with the deleted scenes from Jedi and perhaps a few takes from the Ewoks movies.
It’s possible to restore the original space battle sequence, and that changes the pacing a bit - see the link to my thread below. You can also throw in General Madine and add the Jerjerrod subplot to add more scale to the movie.
Please take a look at some of my ROTJ experiments, might be helpful:

Looks great ! I dont notice any problems.
Interesting, it has a sort of Tarantino feel 😃

Very interesting and that explains observations I’ve made whilst watching the current DS9 airings on the Horror Channel. 😃
Sorry for the OT but I think it’s relevant regarding preservation.
It’s easy to spot the effect on saturated colors. Here’s something from Season 1 (1993):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jguxZgKyLo4
Pause at 0:09 and look at that red/orange background (on the left), at 2:36 the green lights and at 3:12 the wormhole (a bit violet). All are washed out, light and a bit off. So if you see this, these are not Hue or saturation errors. It’s just a different colorspace being used.
I mentioned shaders, so here’s a link about that: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-home-theater-computers/912720-color-correction-htpc-simpler-solution-now-really-works.html
Have fun 😃
Any ideas about Zardoz ? I guess it’s possible to:
For I’m just looking for ideas and direction.
I feel this movie is overlooked but has a lot of potential for fan editing 😃
I like it VERY MUCH!
For reference, here’s some fashion in real 2 strip Technicolor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-39gpG0nxM
It matches really well 😃
My suggestion here would be to edit the movie into a serial.
One interesting aspect of old NTSC sources is the wider colorspace. This was only changed in the 1990s:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTSC#Colorimetry
For example the first seasons of Star Trek DS 9 use the old colorspace. This was not corrected for DVD release, even on the PAL versions. That why the colors look so unsaturated and off. We are viewing them on sRGB / EBU displays with a smaller color space!
https://color.viewsonic.com/asset-files/images/what-is-color-gamut-3.jpg
Interestingly, this NTSC colorspace is very close to the current DCI-P3, used for 4K HDR TV.
Just something to take into account when preserving NTSC masters. If the colors are really off, it needs colorspace conversion. There are some Media Player Shaders that can handle it for playback I think.
Been toying around with something, applied a 2 strip technicolor lut on TPM.
Nice! Now go full 1920s with 4:3 aspect ratio and low fidelity mono sound 😃

The colors were never that consistent throughout the OOT.
It’s simple, they where basically white and what we see are color shifts due to the special effects.
With each photographic pass the film shifts a bit towards yellow, magenta or cyan… Here’s a random image that shows this: https://i0.wp.com/www.coffeewithkenobi.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/A-wing-ROTJ.jpg?ssl=1
Notice the Cyan window supports and specially the magenta A-Wing. Each element has a different shift.
Jedi, having more complex effects, suffers a lot from this.
Looks animated and in slow motion… Try some blur to simulate fast movement 😉
