Help Wanted: NEED ISOLATED BITS AND PIECES of dialogue and sound effects sequences from A NEW HOPE
Time

The center channel from a 5.1 mix usually has music mixed in (specially if it was just upscaled from a Dolby Surround track…) so it’s not the best option.

Your best bet is to try something like Adobe Audition’s Center Channel extractor on a lossless Dolby Surround track.
That has some chance of really separating dialog from stereo music.

Quality is normal SD / DVD quality, a bit soft but with decent color. I’ve matched the colors and contrast of the extended Naboo arrival, dissolving from the deleted to the theatrical footage and it works well.

I agree that some effects are too rough, like on the Jedi archive. But the essential ones (senate, padme’s house) are decent. Anything that centers AOTC around Padmé will do, since she’s the main character.

Well, the time span is about a day on Dagobah and the Palace. So Yoda dying in the morning and Luke departing in the afternoon is not a problem. Of course, you need to accept really fast travel times 😉

But we need to recolour R2-D2 to make him another droid! Having another droid could also be a nod to the prequels.
In there some dialog where Luke mentions a number or a letter ?

Rejoining the fleet briefing would need some extra work.

Anyway, these are very interesting ideas 😃

You could cut at the point where the gamorrean guards appear, so that the audience thinks they captured 3PO and R2, maybe?

Great idea. Jaba then gets introduced when Leia comes in with Chewie 😃
I’d also cut the trapdoor, it works better as a complete surprise for the viewer (and Luke).

I’ve seen a few attempts to trim down the ‘water pipes’ gag with BB8 during the opening sequence, and tried making one myself, but never saw one that really felt right.

Can anyone recommend anyone’s work on this scene? Perhaps there’s a good one out there I haven’t stumbled into, but you have.

Just use the deleted original opening. Solves the water gag and the General Hugs prank.

My ROTJ fixes & changes project thread
Time

An attempt at Luke using his Jedi powers on the Ewoks, at end of the story scene.
I added some hand ( fingers 😉 ) movement and the Force theme. This also connects to Luke sensing Vader.
This way he senses him while doing mind control on the Ewoks.

It’s a bit fast perhaps, but as always, just trying some ideas.

The matte paintings from the Ewoks movies could be used.
The large planet is there and the style is in line with other mattes on ROTJ.

Changing all Jedi displays to monochrome will improve things immediately. Two colors at best 😃

As for the hand yes, just crop it. There’s button pressing a few seconds later from another angle.
So the viewer would still see how the console is operated 😉

Smithers' Prequel Fanedits (a Work In Progress)

 • removing kid anakin from the end battle (painting out any glimpses of him running around)

The best option is to edit out the kid stuff (get rid of the “whoops”) and show him activating the autopilot on purpose!
That makes his character much better, and in line with his force abilities.
Also disobeying (by going into battle) explains the reservations to his training by the council.

 • many scenes with jar jar painted out (all scenes on tatooine and coruscant at least)

For me the only good scenes are the dinner at Anakin’s house and when Amidala asks him for help.

Even without painting him out, just removing his noises helps. As with Anakin, remove all those exclamations and little screams. They are there only to keep very young audiences interested.
You will see that the movie immediately improves just with sound editing.

OK, I hate to be a pain with constant posting of more problems but I’ve just been re-watching the Space Battle of Endor a few times and I’ve come up with a wonderfully unrealistic wish list of fixes.

The effects suffer from bad lighting and color shifts due to the way they were composed.
On top of that you have a terrible BlueRay grading that makes everything flat. Look at the original trailer.
The space scenes are much darker and look immediately better: https://youtu.be/p4vIFhk621Q?t=102

I think that the only thing fixable is grading. 1983 effects are what they are…
