Dune - radical fan edit ideas
Time

That Gurney footage might be used as if obtained by the Guild somehow. Satellite or a miniature “fly” drone or something.

A guild report would then explain that sprice production is low, and Paul has reunited with former Atreides house member Gurney Halleck. We see them reuniting, but only hear the guild narration.

Great ideas 😃

Yes, the TV cut is sort of a censored workprint, and needs editing.
I just checked it again and they go with the male narrator to bridge the missing scenes.
But it doesn’t work because it’s still rushed and out of place.

I wonder if we could retool the male narrator’s voice into Guild or Harkonen reports… visually you could have it over establishing shots, ships and reaction shots from the emperor, baron, etc.
Just move away from Arakis for a few minutes and have time pass. Must try this someday 😃

Been quiet but I’m enjoying all these images and ideas! KEEP POSTING!
I love the idea of compositing new mattes based on paintings, instead of CGI.
Very interesting the Conan connection…

The thing stopping me from working more on Dune is that we lack scenes for the ending.
No matter as much as I try, it’s always lacking. Alia comes from nowhere, and time has passed.
(Time skips also happen when Paul is with the freemen. We need to break that up more).

Perhaps we do need some “narration” (titles over images) to move things along and offer some exposition.

“Feeling” is important.
I come from Star Trek (with multiple movies, alternate universes and series) so yes, I’m familiar with some things feeling right and others don’t.
But that’s to be expected as they try new stuff. And you need to new things to keep the franchise going.
The key is to appreciate it as best as possible and don’t’ overthink it. Afterall, it’s supposed to be a fun adventure.

And here’s an attempt to integrate another Vader deleted scene with Luke going to Dagobah first.
So the first time we see him he’s basically the same character as on ESB.

Again, it needs some more audio work, etc, etc.

I think it’s a bit rushed for an introduction, but makes more sense character wise. Really depends on personal preference (spectacle vs substance).

Playing a bit with the Jerjerod & throne room sequence.
Dialog was edited to make Vader more active and worried about the rebel fleet.
(disregard Vader’s voice on the deleted scene of course, I’d need to replace it by some close up with just his breathing sound)

As always, just an idea to see how it flows.

Final scene of the film.

2019 master:

Looking at that image I think I understand why it looks somewhat desaturated. They went for natural skin tones and it looks fine there. I guess film aging has affected more cyan and yellow…
Anyway, I prefer this conservative approach. Seeing bright pink persons it worse than desaturation.

Did a bit more on this one back in September…

Sorry, I see no improvement over the official version.
Anyway, this might help if you are trying to redo the matte:

Also, why not contact this guy ? Very good model (and photo) I think.

'Privateer 2 - The Darkening' upscaled sequences... (Released)
Time

I’ve been upscaling and deblocking “Privateer 2: The Darkening” Full Motion Video sequences, from the original .TGV video files. These are 320x132 @12 fps highly compressed videos.
There’s a better 30fps VHS capture of the cinematics, but unfortunately it doesn’t have all of the sequences.

Here’s scene 24 upscaled to 640x264:

Not brilliant, but watchable. If someone is interested in this, PM or say something here 😉

I’m not sure I understand where that scene would come into play, or how it would relate to finding Luke.

Both the Emperor and Vader are after Luke. That’s the only reason I can think off for Vader to go to the Emperor unannounced. But the Emperor has his own plans, so he denies entry to the throne room.
I feel that this would give more substance to Vader’s actions (for example letting Luke land on Endor).
But I agree that it’s hard to show all this from a short scene. It’s there, but not obvious 😉
