Dune - radical fan edit ideas
Time

You know here is a radical idea… Use Battle Beyond the Stars Ships shots which have been in about 5 films in Dune!

😃 Some of those might work, specially this one:

Really similar to what we already have on Dune…

But the Guild has monopoly on space travel. This is important and we need to show it.
So a similar style for all craft is important.

Thanks again for the great suggestions.
I was thinking of having parts of the princess narration on Paul’s visions.
I’d like to avoid narration at all if possible. I think the story is clear enough if you order the scenes logically.

I suggest this sequence:

» the Prophecy
» Paul at Caladan. No film book, just introduce his training, the Atreides staff and let him have the conversation with the Duke.
» Secret Report within the Guild and the Emperor.
» Paul’s test by the reverend mother

This is very self contained and avoids introducing many places and characters at once.

Yes, some scenes are out of sequence.

Played a bit with the opening sequence. This can go right after the credits.

It’s a mix of the deleted scene with the theatrical and TV version.
Disregard the fades, sound, etc, etc. Just a test.

It needs some shots of the Freemen assembled, the planet for orbit, etc…
But shows that there’s enough material to do something different!

I’m a big fan of Spicediver’s version.

My main problem with Dune is that the ending has a very different editing style.
So perhaps I could try to edit the beginning in that style.

Most of the scenes can be shorter with no dialog loss, if edited properly.
He have enough reaction takes for that.

Perhaps internal monologue could be moved to Bene Gesserit mind reading or Paul’s vision sequences.

Let’s discuss radical edit ideas for Dune.

To start we have Lynch’s original idea of ending the film much sooner, with Paul’s dream in the desert.
This opens the door to play with dream sequences, visions and non-linear elements to complete the story.

Another route is to restructure the story.
Starting with Paul and the prophesy might work. Perhaps only show the emperor late in the story?

How about forgetting the book and making Arrakis a desert area on a larger planet, with each house on a different continent? Might work better since we don’t have many space effect shots.

I’d like to know what you think about this

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **

Yes, those shots are from Jedi.
You can see Luke walking behind Vader on this shot:

Idea: a 'Prequel Trilogy Edit: The Reincarnated Edition' - a Wishlist thread (* CANCELED *)
Time

Start with Phantom Menace and remove all childish stuff + badly acted scenes.
No Jedi droid slashing, no underwater sequence, no extended mother goodbyes, etc etc.
Remove Jar Jar, Anakin and the Droids “funny” noises.
And above all, make Anakin go on the final attack intentionally!
Aim for a 1H30 movie.

Those changes are easy to do and will put you into a more “radical” frame of mind.
The other movies are harder to tackle thematically. So warm up on TPM 😉

Yes, it was related to your post. I feel it’s best to connect the PT to the sequels, not the other way around.

An example:
You could have Anakin cover his face when he tries to save his mother.
The garage scene with Padme is cut, so the killing becomes his secret.

That would establish his conflict visually and give dramatic tension to all his future scenes.

Of course you could do the same later, when he his killing the younglings, etc, etc.
Ideally Anaking should welcome the Vader mask, not scream “nnoooooo”…

For me the connection with Kylo Ren’s conflict is obvious.

I think Adywan will not do any major changes. The single DS is a nice idea for fanedits, but not for a revisited edition.
And since we have TFA with yet again a super weapon, I think its just part of Star Wars!

There’s a lot to fix with the movie as it is, specially regarding effects.
Just doing a good regrade and adding some effects to the original shots makes a difference.

Thanks for the nice comments!

The hologram is a simple overlay with some color tweaking of the Death Star plans with no extra effects.
Less is more 😉 But I was really just following Snooker and his execution is very good!

I like the idea of the Dooku hologram, and it’s somehow doable.
But it would reduce mystery a bit and perhaps confuse the Jango sub-plot.

Another idea would be to show Jango on Coruscant receiving a hologram from Dooku or the trade federation dude.
It would improve Obi-Wan vs Jango confrontation.
Creating extra scenes from scratch is very difficult, but let’s see what I can do.

The deleted scenes are DVD sourced and up-scaled the best I can… It’s a shame they are not in HD but I guess the source is really SD. Basically those scenes are mock-ups for Lucas to play with editing 😉
