Star Wars: Remastered - A New Special Edition (* unfinished project *)

What was said above. The updated version doesn’t work, I felt lost almost immediately.
You should respect the original timing and reveals.

You do have some freedom regarding composition and speed I think.

It could work with the Tantive coming from below the camera perhaps a little slower, and then have the camera move down to reveal the Star Destroyer passing above. Make both ships closer and add more damage effects and more firing.

As always, just an opinion, it’s your show 😃

It’s not a still shot, since the camera tilts down to frame the scene…
And the original framing is perfect 😃

Anyway… perhaps you can give the camera some forward motion, so that we stay closer to the Tantive at the start and then we slow down to reveal the Star Destroyer ?
Seems to be enough time for a slow camera movement there.

I’m not a blender expert bit if you need something, just PM.
Have you thought about the amount of effect shots you need for the entire movie 😉 ?

Trying to reconstruct the space battle sequences. Following the reconstructed dialog available on the web, but going mostly for visual continuity.

This is “Chapter Two: Protecting the large cruisers”
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1GTgy37xmDEGUPDw_ZNWoMQD534al5STU

It’s still lacking the extra Falcon crew, but you can see that it will integrate nicely.
For example, the repair scene should be right before “pressure steady”.
Also no sound editing yet, other than restoring the female pilot’s voice.

I have the rest of the battle restructured (including “Chapter Five: Taking out the jamming Star Destroyer” ) and it can work using Rogue One Y-wing footage, but more on that latter.

Ships animations are done in Blender (cycles engine). Planets are created from the combination of several NASA/Google Earth images in Photoshop. So they are basically 2D objects. At the end I mix it all in After Effects, apply some filters to make it look more like a movie and that’s it.

Nice Blender work, I’m also a fan of it. If you stick to simple camera and model movements, it will blend nicely with the original where needed.

I like your option to composite the scenes and not do it all in 3D.
That makes it look like the original. You are on the right path !

It’s possible to color correct it a bit better. But for Jedi a lower resolution helps to hide the rushed effect shots and bad mattes. I’m working at 720p and it improves things a bit.
I have 4K83 and on that you notice that they are walking over paintings… and you can’t suspend disbelief.

Just a quick update on the story scene: I added a music cue to Luke and it sort of works, but you do need a hand shot to make it clear he’s using the Jedi Mind Trick…

I just came across this short video:

I like shot composition better shows how the death star is not yet in range. Plus the extra fighters.

The composition is nice but the CGI is very basic and dated (basic light, depth of field and materials).
For decent CGI take a look at “Star Wars: Destroyer - A Star Wars Fan-Film” or “The Lost Starfighter - Star Wars Fan Film”. Your own Falcon replacement was also quite good.

Great that you like it 😃

I must work on the 3CPO story scene.
If you look closely at Luke in the end you can see that he is using the force to get the Ewoks to help.
This ties in with their sacrifice on the battle and with Luke’s temptation towards the dark side.

The key here is that he only goes to Vader after this happened. Don’t think he would stay just to listen to the robot!

So I’ll try some rescoring on that scene. Perhaps I need a close up of the hand waving, let’s see how it goes.

It takes A LOT of time (which I don’t really have) to work on every single element.

I understand that from personal experience.
And once you change one element, you have to do it on all the effect shots.
But for ANH you are lucky: the movie has less effect shots and you can use stuff from Rogue One directly.

No rush, take your time!

Here’s a rough ground battle sequence, with the changes I described above.
This needs better sound editing, but it’s good enough to get the idea of how it could work.
Of course, you would be cutting away from this to the space battle and throne room.

Extra footage comes from the Ewoks movies and the Bucketheads fan film. Explosion shots are from TFA.
Also using the “bunker redux” reedit by section33.

I like the CGI, but an interesting option would be to recomposite the effects.

It’s time consuming, but you can mask each element in separate, and them apply some filters. For example, you can add some bloom to those star destroyer lights, engines, etc. Create some depth of field, add shadows, etc.

So for the falcon departure, I’d try to keep the original model, but change or improve the planet.
For Tattoine I’ve seen great photos of the actual filming locations, taken from similar angles, so again perhaps you could use those to reassemble some effect shots.

Getting the CGI anywhere close to the level of the original models might even take longer.
Once I tried to better Star Trek TMP’s Enterprise… well it started to look similar with about 12 lights… and 2 hours to render a frame… But it never looked better!

Anyway, good luck!

As such, I believe the third act would benefit greatly from reducing the alternance between Endor, the space battle and the throne room scenes.

An interesting possibility is to change the ground battle: the rebels surrender (as a deception), Ewok ambush, bunker door opening, deleted interior bunker fight, bomb placement and explosion.
This is simpler, and most of it can take place earlier than the throne room.
Also makes room for the Death Star firing on Endor subplot.

The main problem with the ground sequence is the disconnect with the space battle. The ground team should be in radio contact with the rebel fleet and tell them that the shield is still up.

I’m working on a reordered bunker sequence. For me that’s a low point of the movie, and looking hard at the footage we get, it seems like the original idea was a bit different.

So as I have it, the rebels give themselves up to attract all the imperial troops, setting up an ambush.
There’s footage to support this and even dialog (Han telling 3CPO to “stay here”, the Ewoks talking to 3CPO). Fan film footage of hidden rebels can be used here.

As a result of the ambush the Empire goes after the Ewoks, and you get the door opening sequence.
Then they infiltrate the bunker (extended sequence) setting up the charges. Once they set the charges up, it blows.

Overall it makes sense and our characters look smart (even the Ewoks).
Above all, you get the notion that the battle moved somewhere else, and not that the Ewoks defeated the Empire.

Where do I look, as far as top quality is concerned?

Search YouTube and you will find excellent quality.
But search for “cinematic” or “cutscenes”. Normal gameplay visuals are too different in style.

Give it a look you might find something usable there.
