Okay, seems like I always get stuck without much time to use the computer right when I went to get things done, but I'm about to encode some test files on the lossless tracks to see what works best for Harmy's upcoming efforts in Bluray authoring.

Probably not at least not in Harmy's package it seems as if Harmy is going to use almost every last Gigabyte of space that a 25GB Blu-ray will give him so if you want any non-English you will probably have to do it yourself

Hey guys! First, hello! I am brand new here and i am stoked about what you are doing. Great work. I come from germany so i hope you will forgive me my bad english.

Actually, i already have some questions. I have trouble playing the v2.1 avchd on my macbook. i burned the iso file to a dvd and i am able to play it on my bd player (although it does not run it in 24p but that's a player issue).

So i already downloaded vlc and other stuff. I just cant open the iso file. Is there a problem with mac computers? If anyone can help id really appreciate that!

If I'm running an ISO off my mac, I usually double click to mount the ISO, then I open DVD Player and it should play automatically...

Nood question here, but are there any instructions on how to correctly burn these to DVD9 for playback on Bluray?  I can watch these on laptop, but I want to gift them to my cousin on disc as well (yes he has official copies).

cdburner xp or other freeware preferred.

The special characters are not a property of the language, but of the character set that's been used to create the file. All languages on this planet can actually be expressed in more than one character set: at least in UTF-8, UTF-16 and UTF-32. Then you also have all the legacy charset (e.g. ISO-8859-1 or Windows-Latin1, CP1450 etc. etc). You'll have to tell mkvmerge that as well. You can use mmg's "subtitle charset" option for it.

There is generally no way to auto-detect the character set used by text file. Programs can take guesses with some measure of certainty, but that's always prone to a lot of false positive -- which is why mkvmerge simply opts not to do that.

In you case:

•The files with "UTF-8" in their names are encoded in UTF-8 (duh!).

•The Polish file is encoded in UTF-8 as well.

•The French and Spanish files, however, are encoded in ISO-8859-15.

•The English file doesn't use any non-ASCII characters, therefore you don't have to select anything special for it.

So, what I take away from this is that for improved compatibility with MKVToolNix (and perhaps other applications) the French and Spanish subs would likely benefit from an ISO-8859-15 to UTF-8 conversion.  A quick Google search, a few lines in Terminal under MacOS X (using the "iconv" command), and I just sent off (what appears to me to be) 100% working, MKVToolNix compatible, UTF-8 format French and Spanish versions of johnlocke2342 and Vali's subs to HanDuet for proper vetting…

That's about it for now! ;)

They wouldn't have to do anything. NO ONE would have to do anything but scan the film and make sure it wasn't damaged. If ILM had to recreate all of the original effects, they'd end up making another SE, as recreating the effects was the original plan until George saw Jurassic Park.

 

Well, things likely also depend on just how far back they go with their film elements, would they be transferring from negatives with optical effects already composited, or would they have to separately scan then arrange the live action film with the effects footage?  It'd look good being put back together from scratch (with every layer of the final image cleaned/corrected individually), and possibly end up reasonably close to how it was in the original, but likely they would introduce some sensible "improvements", as they did in ESB where they made snowspeeder cockpits no longer see-through (and more often likely introducing many unintended differences).  It kind of comes down to what there is left to work with and what specific film elements it was that Lucas claimed to have "destroyed" when he made the SE (if he wasn't lying about that, as well).

that's the problem. It just does not. I finally found a software that can play it. its called DVDFabMedia Player. I just have the test version and it runs out soon. I wonder why it does not work with the standarf dvd player software. i have osx mountain lion and the latest updates are on my system. its so frustrating...!

Well, DVD Player is... a DVD player. For DVDs. Harmy's DeEd is an AVCHD, aka a shrunken down Blu-ray. VLC works fine for me on OS X 10.8.4, as long as there's no subtitles.

That's it! I also tried VLC but it did not work. I will unpack it again and reinstall VLC. 

EDIT: I got it! I can not open it from the VLC, i have to click on the BDMV, open with VLC, then i get some warnings and it starts playing. Thanks guys!

Wow, I watched most of ANH via VLC on my high pixel count notebook last night.  Really, really amazing work.  The scene in Ben's house to me showed the Kurosawa influence that GL was under, it was like golden silverlight.   Most impressive.  I can see how the films really captured the imaginations of you 1977 youngsters!

Another thing was the whole analogness of the movie.   In a digital world, I can see how that might want to suppressed by some, but analog is "real" and digital is "not."  The new versions of the movie are not "real" anymore.
