I think the initial confusion is that you mean rotj 2.5* (not 2.7) is still listed.

And I think that’s a valid question (which might have a good answer/justification):
Why is rotj 2.5 still listed when rotj 3.1 is released (and presumably supercedes it)?

Exactly my point. I wonder if it’s because ROTJ 2.5 is made like all the others DEED (by adding different sources together), whereas 3.0 and 3.1 are from a 1983 source, and demand a different set of skills.

No, ROTJ 2.5 also used 1983 film scans mixed with the Blu-rays. 3.x uses 1983 films scans mixed with the UHDs. It’s the same general process, just with better-quality sources in 4K. I suspect 2.5 wasn’t removed when 3.0 came out because 3.0 had a major error, and 2.5 was the fallback. Then by the time 3.1 came out, failing to remove it was an oversight.

This is mostly correct. Ready access to ROTJ v2.5 was maintained due to the errors in ROTJ v3.0. Those issues are resolved by ROTJ v3.1.

Currently, I’ve still kept ROTJ v2.5 listed for two reasons:

  1. It’s included in the “bundle” torrent with SW v2.7 and ESB v2.0 (though it can be selectively not downloaded with a torrent client); and
  2. ROTJ v3.1 is currently only provided in MKV format while ROTJ v2.5 is also available in AVCHD (BD) or NTSC DVD5 formats.

I’ll probably remove ROTJ v2.5 from my guides if v3.1 becomes readily available in additional formats (like other DEED releases) or after enough time passes. Thanks all for the feedback!

Why do you keep ROTJ 2.7 now that 3.1 is out? Is it because 2.7 was the last “classically made” despecialize and 3.1 is from a scan? Thanks and keep up the great work!

The previous DEED releases for Return of the Jedi were ROTJ v3.0 and ROTJ v2.5, neither of which are being actively listed. You might be thinking of Star Wars v2.7, which is the current and color-corrected version of SW v2.5.

has anyone else encountered an error that part 2 of the RAR is corrupted, when trying to extract the 3.1 UHD MKV? I’ve tried redownloading part 2, and still get the error.

The multipart downloads also include a .SFV file that contains the checksums of each individual multipart RAR. If you use a checksum verification program to open this .SFV file, it will verify if part 2 (or any other part) is truly corrupted or not.

If all parts pass checksum verification, you may be getting this “corrupted” error when something else is wrong, such as using the wrong extraction password. This depends on what extractor program you’re using and on what system.

I just want an older version of the google doc because I forget how to use the Unarchiver 🥺

Once you’ve downloaded all the files, even if out of sync. Right click on the first one and press “open with” then click unarchiver. (Only right click one file, Don’t highlight all of them) Then unarchiver will do its thing and wham! Return of the Jedi!

Glad it sounds like things were all sorted! I’ll consider adding back in a few more details about manual extraction of the multipart RAR files. Note that the new recommended download manager, JDownloader 2, should take care of the extraction, although I haven’t verified that this works on macOS.

P.S. I do archive each version of my guide, so if anyone truly needs info from an older version, send me a PM on these forums and I’ll send a shared link!

Harmy and others were having trouble with the public torrent website, which may display prompts to download some bogus VPN before allowing download of the magnet/torrent. While a privacy-focused browser and/or good ad-blocker extensions should prevent these predatory ads, we’ve now added a “Direct” download link for the .torrent file so that those having trouble with the torrent website can bypass it entirely.

Please don’t share those links directly. Ideally, refer people to the HDG (https://goo.gl/1WGHBA). If they can’t be bothered to read the guide, link directly to the Download Sources page: https://goo.gl/5Sif60

It’s important that people read the legal requirements (i.e., you must own a copy of the Star Wars films to download fan edits of them) and other cautionary notices!

There is a typo on the download page I noticed when it was updated yesterday. The Star Wars and ESB movies files are listed as 1080p but are only 720p. Is this a hint at a future release of both in 1080p. I’d love to see them both in 4k to go with ROTJ.

Thanks for the feedback, I’ve fixed those typos in the Download Sources guide. The correct resolution is 720p for SW v2.7 MKV and ESB v2.0 MKV. I do believe Harmy intends to provide high resolution releases for future DEED version of Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, but I’ll let him to speak to that in his own time. 😃

Thank you, Harmy!

With this latest version of Harmy’s Despecialized Edition for Return of the Jedi, I’ve also published a HUGE update to my guide! HDG v7.0 features completely revised download methods graciously provided in collaboration with other fans of the Despecialized Editions. This includes use of a more modern download manager and a public torrent option!

As always, my guide is available at this persistent URL: https://goo.gl/1WGHBA

Check out the Change Log at the bottom if you’re interested in the details of this update, and please feel welcome to message me if any errors or issues are discovered with the guide. I hope this guide update makes it easier for those who own copies of the Star Wars films to enjoy Harmy’s incredible projects!

I will keep the old links up for today in case someone’s already downloading them and then delete them tomorrow.

Getting links up on mega is being worked on, like the with the other files in the Introductory (Handuet) Guide from the first post.
Of course mega also sometimes puts the bandwidth limits on…

My guide (specifically, the Download Sources supplement) now includes Harmy’s new GDrive links and additional links from MEGA.

My Internet’s a bit slow these days, so I’m still pending independent verification of successful download and file integrity from Multipart RAR sources, but I’ve confirmed SnooPac’s uploads to the Spleen match Harmy’s checksums (UHD & 1080p). 😃

Thanks, Harmy! I’ve updated my download guide with these new releases. I’ll continue to make revisions as new information/sources become available.

P.S. I’ve decided to re-title this document to “HanDuet’s Guide” (or “HDG” for short) in place of the former, unwieldy title of “The Ultimate Introductory Guide” (“TUIG”).

As always, the guide’s URL remains unchanged: https://goo.gl/1WGHBA

Updates to my guide for Harmy’s DEED are upcoming. This document is intended to help answer the common questions on how to obtain Harmy’s releases, but is admittedly outdated at the moment. Expect minor updates today and refinement over the next week or two.

When an alternative, verified download source becomes available for ROTJ DEED v3.0, I can provide direction to that. Feel welcome to DM me if you are aware of such options.

Harmy: Can we get checksums for the successfully-extracted files to verify the integrity of downloaded copies? Thanks for your continued amazing work!

WinRAR is the problem.

I just downloaded the ESB MKV, checked it with the sfv file, and extracted it 100% with WinRAR with no problems or errors.
So not sure why. Maybe a newer version of WinRAR is needed for some reason? I just downloaded the newest 64bit version from their website for this test.

Likewise, I successfully tested extraction using WinRAR x64 (64 bit) 5.71 on MKV and AVCHD releases of SW and ESB with no issue. Without more information, I can only assume the extraction errors some people have encountered is a local issue (installed software version, hardware limits) rather than something systematically wrong with the files. If anyone else is having persistent difficulty with extraction, please send me a PM so I can get a better understanding of the problem.

Bluto’s comprehensive and quality ’Guide to Downloading Projects from Usenet’ thread, in the How-To’s and Technical Discussions section of the site, may also be of interest for those members looking to acquire Harmy’s Despecialized Editions - or TN1’s 4K OT Preservation Projects.

solkap’s ’NJVC Custom Blu-ray Set of Harmy’s Despecialized Editions now available on Mega’ thread - with helpful and concise step-by-step guide - is a great option on how to acquire this particular Set.

I thought the above is also worth mentioning in here to help people find another method of obtaining projects on here.

Those are truly superb guides Bluto and solkap! Well done and thank you both 😃

Thanks for sharing! For everyone’s awareness, I anticipate that TUIG will be updated within a month or less with new sources for multi-part RAR downloads of Harmy’s DEED, restoring relatively simple access.

That said, I’ve also been investigating alternative download methods that can be pointed to in the guide so that people will have multiple download options, allowing people to choose the method they’re most comfortable with and maintaining access in case one source goes down. I was aware of availability on Usenet, but not of the method to access it freely, as described by Bluto. Another option to look into!

I’ve seen some slight tension on here over people’s inquiry about how to download the DEED files. Side A thinks that Side B is exclusionary because Side A can’t find the downloads while Side B thinks that people in Side A aren’t quite as computer literate as they could be. I believe some of the problem and confusion that people may be having over how to acquire the downloads stems from the fact that the link to the Ulozto site in the Ultimate Introductory Guide (Section 3) is broken. The URL should contain an https:// tag instead of the current http one.

solkap said:

Bantha_Tracker, good eye! Yes, that link is incorrect. However, I seem to find that eliminating the “www.” works better than adding the “s”.

I have contacted HanDuet directly about this mistake and hopefully he will soon correct the error.

Thank you solkap for contacting me, and Bantha_Tracker for pointing out this broken link. TUIG has been updated to v5.0.2 to use the URL <https://ulozto.net>.

Anyone who discovers TUIG errors is welcome to contact me through PM here or my Facebook page:

Either way, I should receive your message and be able to make corrections promptly!

Hint: Use the ultimate guide. It will help a long way.

I looked through it briefly. Unless I missed something, I think the only current place other than spleen was uloz. Anyway, have a myspleen account now and downloading.

This is the first I’ve heard of Uloz.to being ISP blocked. TUIG (https://goo.gl/1WGHBA) provides a way to circumvent tehP (https://goo.gl/5Sif60), but I’m not sure if that will resolve the issue. SnooPac, using the supplemental guide I just linked to, are you able to successfully start downloads with FRD (Section 4 of TUIG) without visiting Uloz.to, or does FRD give some sort of error because of the ISP block?

Feel free to send me a PM to further troubleshoot this issue. Perhaps we can find a solution and update the guide accordingly!

Acknowledging that current version is a workprint that most are choosing to not burn onto a disk, I decided to try creating a BD anyway since I’d like to watch this version with some friends.

For whatever reason, the BD creation with tsMuxeR (2.6.12) results in files that are not functioning correctly. MPC-HC will start playing the video, but freezes if you try to change anything (skip to another track time, enable subtitles, etc.). BD players won’t even open the file, saying that it’s not supported.

Confirmed that I’m able to make functioning BD folders from the official MKV’s for SW (v2.5) and ESB (v2.0), so this seems to be an issue limited to ROTJ (v2.0 workprint). Not sure if there’s something off about the file itself, or if I’m doing something wrong, but I thought I should go ahead and raise awareness to this potential issue.

A newer and more complete 20 minute version of the documentary.
Still work in progress but it will have to do for a while, I think, so I'd welcome it very much, if people made English SDH and foreign subtitles for this, so I can add them :-)

https://youtu.be/QXifjbxZDAM

Hi Harmy! I know it's been awhile since you posted this; sorry I'm late to the party! The additional background information provided in the first half of this extended "Sources Documentary" video is excellent. I'm excited to see the final version of this short documentary in the future!

Since it's still a work in progress, I'm sure you'll eventually improve the pacing and remove repetitive shots (such as explaining problems with the GOUT at 5:30 and again at 12:15). Let us know if you want feedback on any of this, but you already have my complete trust in such matters!

I do have a question for you. As you may remember, I uploaded your first version (let's call it "v0.1") of this documentary on your behalf to my YouTube channel and coordinated efforts to provide subtitles in multiple languages. Over the last 2 years, it's gained nearly 700,000 views and is nearly always embedded or referenced in online articles talking about your project. Additionally, I provided propulsion links to instructions I wrote explaining how to (legitimately) obtain copies of SW DE v2.5. I don't have much to offer in the ongoing improvement of your project, but I like to think that I can at least served my best as an ambassador introducing your work to the masses.

Now that this next version ("v0.2"?) is complete, would you like my assistance in increasing its public visibility? I can offer my help in three ways:

  1. Provide a link to "v0.2" of the Sources Documentary on your YouTube channel in the annotations, description, and comments of the popular "v0.1" video on my channel.

  2. With your permission, upload a copy of your extended "v0.2" documentary to my own YouTube channel, allowing me to continue monitoring comments and pointing people in the right direction to discover your project.

  3. Once again coordinate efforts to provide subtitles to the documentary in multiple languages. At the very least, I can transcribe English subtitles with time (if you have a transcribe available, I can add the timings for you).

---

Either reply or send me a PM if you'd like me to help in any of these ways. My preference is to link people to the video on your channel so that you clearly get the views/credit, but I'd also like to save you the time of deleting comments linking to SW DE on ThePirateBay! I'm here to serve in whatever capacity I'm capable.

The Force will be with you, always.

Hi all! It's been awhile (almost a year, in fact) since this list was last updated, but Harmy sent me Czech subtitles to add to the Sources Documentary video, bringing this featurette's count of available languages to six! If you don't know what video I'm talking about, you can view it on YouTube (with any available subtitles) using the link in my signature. Keep up the good work, everyone!

[P.S. Please tell me if there are any display issues with the Czech subtitles. In the past, we converted all non-English .srt files to UTF-8 encoding to ensure proper display of special characters, but I have retained the original ANSI encoding of the Czech subs as Harmy provided them.]
