Pre-ANH bootleg telecine - a widescreen version (Released) — Page 7

I'd be interested in any screenshots or a short clip to see how the quality compares with the source I had. You say there are no dropouts in your version?

BTW the restored mono mix is available to download - see this thread.

the film quality is not bad (for a bootleg) a little hazy and oversaturated on the colours;  some white flecks on the screen every now and then, no loss in picture though (as on one of your screen captures) so im guessing this is a first geneartion recording? I have sent a copy to ReverendBeastly, Im sure he will put some screen shots on once he has received it.

Any updates on this new find?  If it's an improvement over Moth3r's copy (which I thank you again for sharing with us, Moth3r!), then it's definitely worth preserving.  And if you have to ask why, you're probably on the wrong forum.

Rev, did you get a copy yet? If so, could you please grab some screenshots (ideally the same frames as in the first post) for comparison?

I managed to find out a little more info on the source I used - the generational chain goes like this:

[unknown] -> 3/4" U-matic tape -> VHS copy -> DVD recorder copy -> my Xvid

I suspect that catnap's version comes from a completely different source.

I did get a copy, I will post caps when I get home tonight.

Catnap, send me another email, I can't find your previous one that I'm fairly certain had an address to send a disc to in return.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

So here's some screencaps. Sorry there aren't of many of the commonly-capped shots. The DVD is one of those that you can't actually skip around in the navigation aside from the chapter marks, so that's mostly what I stuck to.

Ah, that takes me back to 77.

It appears to be both better and worse than the previous at the same time.  Much blurrier, but also somehow clearer IMO.

Thanks for the screenshots.

From glancing over the images, I can say that on the plus side this source doesn't have the huge halos/shadows on vertical edges, or the wobbly horizontal field misalignment that plague my source.

It does however suffer from a severe loss of detail from being too dark and very blurry, and is also more heavily cropped along the bottom.

is it me or is there a little error with the aspect ratio, too? (look at the cap with ben, d3bo and luke)

maybe it's a silly question, but isn't there a possibility, technically speaking, that the two sources could somehow be "merged" together?

The aspect ratio is definitely off.  But that can be corrected.

I was going to say exactly the same thing as bkev: it's both better and worse than the original widescreen version we had.  Certainly better in terms of color and image stability, but worse in terms of clarity.  It looks like what I would see if I wasn't wearing my glasses/contacts while watching the film.

It would be great if these two sources could somehow be merged.  I understand that Laserman had some kind of hardware/software technology - "Black Magic" - that could do something like that.  But apart from that, I don't know if we have any such solution.

Has anyone ever attempted to blend two different sources together to create a better quality version?

I ask this because I am currently attempting to combine the video from both KCCI and WBBM and so far the results look pretty good...

I combined both video layers into one using Sony Vegas

My great intellect has stumbled upon this solution which is currently being applied to the... wait, there's a Holiday Special? If "Battle for the Planet" hadn't failed, I would consider trying to use one of those to take over the world; however, I must digress. Perhaps if I suggest this process be applied to these two sources, it would aid in my attempt for world domination! I could start with underground fame, and then work my way up to the top... brilliant!

Didn't Alan Dean Foster say right out he made up the grappling hook miss out of whole cloth?

"Right now the coffees are doing their final work." (Airi, Masked Rider Den-o episode 1)

Pretty much. I emailed him that question, and he responded that he probably made it up. He said it was a long time ago and couldn't remember exactly.

None has kindly re-posted my Xvid version to the newsgroup. However, the NFO file got corrupted somewhere along the line - here is the "good" NFO.

Also posted for the first time are the source discs, for anyone who wants to take a shot at devising a better filter chain than I used.

You've got some characters in that .nfo which don't play well with things.  I believe i've included a .nfo and .html version this time, so they should be intact...  even if the ones showing up in search engines is funky.

Here's a before and after, to get a sense of the work accomplished:

So what came first the inverse telecine or the chroma shift/avisynth filtering/video noise reduction?  It's been awhile, but do you recall the process?  And with all the color discussion of late, do you think the colors you modified towards were overly influenced by the laser disc?

And here I thought the colors were untweaked... anyway, it seems Moth3r did an amazing job improving the source.

True, there are some code page 437 characters present, but NFOs are intended to be viewed, not "played with".

I can't remember in what order the filters were applied. The IVTC would have been early on, and noise reduction towards the end of the script. I may still have the script sitting on my hard drive somewhere, I'll have a look.

Looking back, the noise reduction was way too aggressive. Tatooine's sand came out looking flat and textureless.

It's quite possible that I reduced the colour saturation to be in line with the laserdiscs; it also may have been an attempt to reduce the effect of the shifted chroma.

but NFOs are intended to be viewed, not "played with".

They were not intentionally modified.  For instance these code 437 characters are not well liked in binsearch's .nfo preview.  That's where i'm seeing them not showing up properly.

Thanks for the process descriptions.  Would like to see the scripts, but don't have a good understanding of that at the moment.  Thinking that since the Catnap source has colorbars that if a similar methodology was applied relocating the colors to match a definition colorbar sample, a better understand of what the original colors were like could be found.  Or it could just end with a poor telecine transfer.  But that's doubtful, since it's widescreen which wasn't done on VHS in those early days.
