Has anyone considered cutting the Palpatine hologram call to General Pryde from later in the movie? Then reusing that footage for a Palpatine return message to Pryde earlier on, almost like he’s in on it. (Pryde almost does just show up out of nowhere)

All that would need to be done is hiding Palpatine’s mouth which it does fall under the darkness/of hologram a lot in the shot.

That could work, though I think Pryde was elevated partially because of the animosity between Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and General Hux, especially after Hux’s failures and attempted assassination of Kylo…

Which also gives Hux motivation to aid the Resistance against Kylo and Pryde.

(If only more of that was laid out in the film…)

Oh I agree. Personally I’m leaning more towards IIFaneditor’s concept, except I would change the dialogue so that it goes like this.

“what’s the message?”

-holographic/transmission sound-

“At last the work of generations is complete, the day of victory is at hand, the day of sith.
Send the fleet to the galaxy…let it burn.
The Final order begins”
“Yes my lord”

All that transpired regarding the rise and fall of the repulic is addressed as the work of generations. Same reaction shots, more context to the story. Spy plot is teased. Best of ALL, no half arsed introduction from Poe.
A few birds with one stone, if you ask me.

Sounds great on paper! Any option that drops “Somehow Palpatine returned” is a welcome change.

+1 Hard agree here.

While I sit firmly with the majority in having a rather colourful opinion towards a good chunk of TROS’ narrative choices - particularly with how villain-of-the-week Palpatine’s role ultimately ends up being - I still can gladly accept the base story that we were given and try to go along for the ride with it.

But man - that line… Perhaps it’s only me that has as an extreme aversion to it, but every time I get to that point I always without fail get pulled out of the film. It just… doesn’t work? It feels so “real-world” and un-filmic.

As I pitched a few pages back, even just making the line “…It confirms the worst… [Pause] Palpatine.” It would tame how jarring it feels at least partially (not fully, mind you).

But honestly, I’d be happy with just about anything that keeps the moment from feeling like a script editing intern accidentally labelled one of the screen directions as a character line but nobody higher up noticed until it was way too late into production to feasibly fix.

This is really my only major gripe against what will otherwise assuredly be my definitive version of TROS. Seriously amazing work Hal and everyone else involved.

Have made an extended version of the musical cue for the “Rey Skywalker” moment at the end.

I took some strings and flutes from a cue in The Last Jedi and transposed them to A# which play underneath the horns until the rest of the orchestra comes in, as well as copying that starting note and transposing it down a fifth so you get the nice complete statement of the Force Theme (even though it’s in a different key than usual to make it fit with Rey’s theme, which thematically I actually quite like here.)

I’ve also subtly doubled the orchestra for the very last statement of Rey’s theme before it hits credits. The cue as written in the TFA suite is fairly subdued in terms of arrangement for what’s supposed to be a big, cathartic “end of a 9 film saga” shot. It should just sound like the rest of the orchestra naturally swells in, but let me know if it needs massaging, or you want a version without that.

Hopefully it’s useful, I welcome any feedback!

The added A# definitely helps! If you can find it, try using a different source for the first F note. The dynamics of the first two notes go soft-loud to soft-loud in a way that sounds really artificial (at least to me).

I tried my best to eliminate the sounds of “March of the Resistance” already. Here’s the link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iPpp_tUBev3tFt7hAPHVohAIu9SJR4__?usp=sharing

Yeah, that’s the kind of thing! Feels a lot less sudden. 😃

And so the Palptine speech we have without music isn’t actually McDiarmid? Even so that may be the best bet: use it to recreate idir’s dialogue choices and start the scene with it playing to replace Poe’s opening lines. Idir’s version feels much better than the original dialogue.

I don’t mind putting that together but it may be more expedient if anyone wants to do that for me. I will if no one beats me to the punch, whenever that’ll be.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I’ve updated this with a version that’s cleaned up the first note a bit and doubles the orchestra for the final statement. Sorry for the barrage of posts! Just excited, I really love the idea of using the Rey/Force cue at the end here, kudos to whoever’s it was!

This is the best quality I can find of the actual Palpatine broadcast file. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaqWN3Orb9Q

If I can find the audio of the actual cue that’s playing underneath it I can probably isolate it out fairly well without messing with Palpy’s voice too much.

If someone wants to give it a shot, here’s how to create the new dialogue
Send the fleet to the galaxy, let it burn”

-“Send”

*Palpatine and Pryde: “Send a ship to a world they know”

-“The”
*Palpatine and Pryde - “The Princess of Alderaan has disrupted…”

-“fleet”
*Palpatine in Kylo’s head - “do not make me turn my fleet against you”

-“to”
*Palps and Pryde - “Send a ship to a world they know”

-“the galaxy”
*Kylo and palpatine - “you will rule all the galaxy

And if some wants to replicate the new dialogue from my mockup here’s how:

idir_hh said:

I’m out of the editing game for a while cuz of ma computer but if anyone is interested here’s how I made Palpatine’s new lines.
Skywalker is dead!
The Republic, Destroyed

Skywalker” - Return of the Jedi - The Emperor’s arrival. “You have done well lord Vader, and now I sense you wish to continue your search for young Skywalker

Is” - Rise of skywalker - Rey and Palpatine. “Luke Skywalker was saved by his father, the only family you have here is me”

Dead” - Rise of Skywalker - Sith Sacrifice. “And with a stroke of her saber, the Sith are reborn. The Jedi are dead!”.

The Republic” - Revenge of the Sith - Palpatine creates the Empire.“In order to insure the security and continuing stability, the Republic will be reorganised in to the first galactic empire”.

“, Destroyed” - Return of the Jedi - Palpatine zapping Luke with lightning. “If you will not be turned, then you will be destroyed” .
😉

Adding Palpatine’s theme over the dialogue would help cover any audio issues or original unwanted background music that may arise.

What if as Kylo enters the First Order conference room, they are listening to the message; when he throws head on table it switches off immediately, the two stormtroopers could perhaps hear palpatines message from outside the room. (Basically could be muffled as Knights Of Ren and Kylo make they’re way over, stormtroopers make comment about it instead of ghouls)

Test: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqgxZj4Medo

Someone else can probably do this a lot better, maybe a blue light could shut off to represent a hologram.

That’s such a good idea. It demonstrates to the audience that Boolio was executed as a consequence of leaking Palpatine’s discussion with the first Order. Alerting the resistance to his existence and risking the secrecy of The Final Order operation. This gets rid of a huge problem in TROS, that Palpatine announced his plans to the entire galaxy before even executing them. As if he announced that Order 66 was going to happen prior to all the pieces being in place.

It also shows that the high command are perhaps trying to hide their allgience to Palpatine because they shut off the transmission just as Kylo arrives.

Even just the existing audio from the music-less version being added to the nighttime Resistance scene would be better than Poe’s intro lines. And harkening back to it as Kylo heads into his meeting hits home that this was a leak rather than an announcement.

I like it! The clip we have to work with has a hologram or radio filter on it, so that may make it less than ideal to modify.

In that clip, after Palpatine says “the work of generation is complete” there’s a few seconds with just the hologram filter and no dialogue. This could be looped over whatever modification you want to make 😉

I’ve isolated Ian Mcdirmids Palpatine dialogue

V2 Test:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPdX9HVX-go&feature=youtu.be

I’ve made it so as Kylo enters, Hux and Pryde abruptly look in his direction, dialogue is isolated can send the message without music and hologram sounds through if needed.

This is cool! If you could send the audio w/o music I’d like to have a go at making a version of the Resistance briefing with this as Hal’s suggested.

I really like this, but it bothers me that the speech seems to end in the hallway and then we hear the last bit again in the conference room.

What seems kinda odd about this approach is … are they playing that message over the ship’s comms so everyone on board is listening to it? I feel like I’m walking in a hallway at school during the morning’s announcements.

If there was an extended scene of all those generals and whatnot sitting in the room to have them listen to part of the message could work, but we don’t have that kind of footage.
