New HDTV Broadcasts?

Right, but when I say its "not news" I mean that its a generally trivial matter that wouldn't be something he would be aware of. Its not his job to police home theatre forums and see what people are saying. That's the job of the home video department of the distributor. His interest in the release is probably to ask "how's the Blu Ray done?" and a distributor rep tells him, "great, we sold 18 million units in the first month of release", and he says "terrific!" and goes back to making Robin Hood. When he gets to the home video production of Robin Hood and meets with Charles Lazaruka again, he'll probably catch wind of the technical deficiencies of the Gladiator release, but I doubt he would be able to put out a new version so soon, and I especially doubt that the home video department would be interested in a recall given the projected sales of it as it is.

I just wouldn't expect the director to be so on top of things like this.

Peter Jackson's take on film-revisionism on the example of Lord of the Rings
Time

The SE is kind of neat when you view it as it was: a 20th anniversary special for the fans to show how the films might look with modern effects put in and some of the dated effects re-done, plus some things just for fun's sake (i.e. Jabba, Han's run-in with the stormtroopers), along with restored picture and digital surround.

Fun concept--plus a theatrical showing? No wonder I saw it six times in theatres in 1997.

Where it crosses the line, as was said, was when this becomes an excuse to literally let the original film rot to death.  And where Jackson is different than Lucas is that he can accept that his film was made at a certain point in time and certain time in his life--the SW SE is fun, but it should never let you forget this. It has, and thats why the original is no more. Lucas doesn't have to acknowledge that SW was a film he made in 1977 when he was 33 years old, because he can just look at the SE and live in the fantasy.

Um, the EU really isn't up for debate on its definition, its the "expanded universe" which makes it everything that isn't the films. You can chose to ignore whatever films you like, for instance the OT is clearly a seperate story reality from the PT to some, but this is a different matter. To say defining something that is "EU" as "EU" is "following the herd" is a bit stupid since LFL are the ones who coined the very term "expanded universe" to describe the extra-film stories. I mean, by this logic using the very term "EU" is following the herd since you are abiding by the company terminology. What you really mean is that you acknowledge certain story elements and not others. EU is just the label ascribed to the merchandise that isn't an episodic film.

Discussion: Another... FAIL Star Wars Toys Review
Time

I don't understand why grown men are complaining about toys for children.

I mean...they're for children, right? Not forty year old collectors who bitch on the internet about how their children's toys are childish? Right? I miss the good ol days too Ferris, when children's toys were played with by children and not some old guy with a beard who makes videos on youtube.

I mean, seriously though! I know there is a collectors market and everything, but I think some collectors need some perspective.

1997 Special Edition Restoration thoughts...
Time

TPM had all its effects work done at 2k, because 4k didn't exist in 1997, and every shot except one had a digital effect in it--meaning the negative of TPM will always be 2k (if it is from a stored DI in the computer) or less (if it is printed back onto film and then transfered beack to video). Probably all future releases will directly use the 2k DI though.

Location of Holiday Special = Carrie Fisher's House?
Time

That is true. However, I think it comes down to the fact that some fans were interested in it, and Lucas had a more casual attitude towards Star Wars, because it was just one film he had made amongst many more that he thought he would be involved in. The Holiday Special developed a cult status as a "so bad its good" bootleg a little later, probably because everyone that was young in 1978 had now grown up and had nostalgia for it. At the 1987 10th anniversary convention though, it was just another cheesy Star Wars product and Lucas says its a release they are considering on VHS when someone asked about it.

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!
Time

I can see this becoming a new standard: films like "My Dinner with Andre" may not "benefit" in the gimmicky things-flying-at-you way, but every film in 3D does benefit from the immersive element of the third dimension being there. It's like what Lucas says--it doesn't have to be about things poking you in the face and reminding you its 3D, after a few minutes it becomes an invisible process of deeper immersion into the visual presentation of the film. This could become the next step after the introduction of color photography, or it could not--but if it did, it wouldn't be inherantly bad and unnecessary, any more than color is. Does every film need to be in color? Do most films use color in a consciously noticeable way? Not really. But color is more natural, because we see the world in color. So the same is with 3D; we percieve reality in three dimensions. Who knows, 2D photography could in the future be seen as self-consciously stylistic, like how black and white photography in movies is today.

Well, the CG Yoda would be on the negative, which is essentially a 2K digital intermediate. You wouldn't want to paste it onto the DVD transfer from 2001, which sucks even for its time. But yes, I would say a new master has been made with CG Yoda in it, or, if they just edited the clip into the concert footage, that it will soon exist since the scene is now officially endorsed.

They were probably taken directly from the digitized 2K master that serves as the negative, since they had to be projected on a large screen. Its impossible to say if CG yoda is part of the actual master yet (since they are just random clips), but if it isn't then its safe to say it will be when they start getting it ready for the next release since it is now officially endorsed as a proper version of the scene (most likely for blu ray).

The films were transfered in HD in 2001 with the blue line because that's on the negative; the 2003 Lowry HD master either had the same problem or painted it out; the re-releases either continued to have it painted out, or if it was previously in, painted it out; this version was given to SkyHD; shortly after, the truck matte shot was re-done and given to Sci-FiHD.

the sky version was at least a year after the sci-fi HD version (was broadcast in august 09 iirc) but has the original truck shot not the new CG version shown on the sci fi channel! this is the sort of thing that the official sites should advertise as "news" even some of the indy fan sites didnt pick up on it (i guess its just me being sad ha ha!)

That's true, but for whatever reason they didn't use the newest Sci-Fi master, but the master from the previous releases. Maybe Sci-Fi network had an exclusive deal, or maybe Paramount was charging more money for the "enhanced" version.

Basically, as I understand it, there are three different masters: 1)The original HD version from 2001. 2) The Lowry version from 2003 without the blue line (Lowry likely painted it out). 3) The altered version from 2008.

Maybe SkyHD purchased and recieved the film before the latest enhanced version was ready but simply didn't show it until a year later. There could be many explanations, so for me it's not all that weird since the master was changing every two to three years (there might even have been a fourth master, created in 2007, if the original 2003 Lowry release did indeed have the blue line still in it).

I've wondered about that. In the end of ESB it clearly sounds like they don't know where Jabba is. The mention of Tatooine there confuses the matter slightly, but nobody asks why Lando is wearing Han's clothes, except in Family Guy.

Lando had just evacuated Cloud City. He left his wardrobe behind. That's obviously Han's spare clothes that were haning in the Falcon's closet.

No, No, No, No!

They are Lando's clothes. When Han won the falcon in that sabacc game, he also won the clothes of Lando's back.

Lando walked away from the sabacc table completely bollock naked. That's why he's less than pleased to see Han on Cloud City.

Lando's just taking back what's his.

It's all in EU people.

Or maybe I might have made it all up!

Both of these are actually pretty good explanations, actually. :p

Of course, in real life it was because Harrison Ford wasn't going to do a third film, so Lucas set up Lando as a replacement for him, even giving him the Falcon and Han's attire. Which might not have gone over so smoothly with the fans in film three. Good thing Ford came back, so he could mumble stuff blankly through various scenes of dancing puppets and midgets.
