Please explain "Bit-Perfect Audio Capture" for LaserDisc PCM
Time

i'm a bit confused because to my knowledge capturing the pcm audio of a laserdisc through optical (toslink) is bit-perfect. i mean what else can one do? increasing the capture from 16bit to 24bit wont do anything, except a higher filesize. increasing the samplerate from 44.1khz to 48khz on capture wont do anything either, in terms of quality.

i mean, the laserdisc pcm is 16bit @ 44.1khz - what more can you do?

so what do people refer to when they talk about bit-perfect and saying that a normal digital capture wont be enough?

please enlighten me :)

Help Wanted: for an... E.T. (1982) - LD PCM Preservation
Time

digitalfreaknyc brought up a search for the 2002 version of the movie and that’s where it clicked for me. i have to get rid of the 7.1 upmix and get the original mix. now before jump and go all nuts, the mix is included on the blu-ray as dts with low bitrate of 448kbps and it sound pretty good. but when a lossy dts can sound good, how would a fully uncompressed track from the laserdisc sound like? well, even better and you wouldn’t have the problems of dts not triggering the proper surround mode, which is exactly what happens for me on the blu-ray sighs

so long story short: i’m requesting the untouched (16bit, 44.1khz) pcm from thx signature laserdisc.

can anyone help out a fellow e.t. fan?

thanks in advance 😃

the original mono mix can only be found on the old us laserdisc and japan laserdisc. the mono audio on these ld is also analog. so to get the best quality, someone with a good capture setup would be need to capture the audio.

everything after these laserdisc had the circle surround remix, up to the dreadful 7.1 remix on blu-ray. at least they included the original mono mix as a lossy dolby track.

someone made a comparison of the itunes movie store version (1080p at 1.33:1) vs the blu-ray.
please note that the itunes version has been resized for a closer comparison.

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/33385

Is that legit?  It makes the blu-ray look like somebody used temporal noise reduction, an edge enhancer and pushed it out the door.  It's doesn't look like real HD at all.

it's legit. i have the itunes version and brought that topic up on another board. after that, this comparison was done.

How do you encode a matrixed 2.0 PCM audio track, exactly? I have the PCM stereo file from Jonno but I need to author it with the surround flags.

don't touch it. the audio is already properly flagged. just add the pcm to your project. if you're going for a simple remux with tsmuxer, run the pcm through eac3to and export as .w64 or tsmuxer wont recognize the audio file. don't worry, you're not re-encoding. you just change the container. if you use mkv, then this step is not needed.
