Please explain "Bit-Perfect Audio Capture" for LaserDisc PCM
Time

Darth Mallwalker said:

When you made those recordings, did you press Record button before pressing Play?

no, there was enough time before the audio started. but usually i would press record before pressing play.

anyway... i tried to use the -s cmd with synced test-files and i get another weird result

/bitperfect_test/shntool cmp /bitperfect_test/ww1_mixdown.wav /bitperfect_test/ww2_mixdown.wav
Comparing [/bitperfect_test/ww1_mixdown.wav] (0:14.21) and [/bitperfect_test/ww2_mixdown.wav] (0:14.21) :  21% ERROR
shntool [cmp]: error: WAVE data differs at byte offset: 1

when i use the same files without the -s cmd, then i get this

/bitperfect_test/shntool cmp -s /bitperfect_test/ww1_mixdown.wav /bitperfect_test/ww2_mixdown.wav
Scanning [/bitperfect_test/ww1_mixdown.wav] and [/bitperfect_test/ww2_mixdown.wav] :   0% ERROR
shntool [cmp]: error: these files do not share identical data within the first 529200 bytes.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) - Original Theatrical Mix Preservation (Released)
Time

i don’t know the details what the 5.1 audio on the dvd/blu-ray is sourced from. but i would guess it’s coming from the 70mm 6 track magnetic masters. it’s not a bad mix at all, but after listening to the original 35mm mix from the laserdisc, i have to say that i prefer the laserdisc audio. it sounds much better and it’s not as harsh in some scenes then the 5.1 mix. i didn’t do a full-blown comparison, but during the syncing of the audio, the ld waveforms alone looked better - more dynamic if i can say this - i’m no audio technician, so please excuse me for lacking the proper terms 😉

anyway… the laserdisc is synced and ready to be shared to those who have interest.

source: ntsc laserdisc - special thanks to PDB for providing the pcm audio
synced by myself to the blu-ray using adobe audition
release format: flac, 16bit 2.0 (dolby surround) at 44.1khz
download: -

why do you use flac instead of wav?
flac is a lossless codec and saves spaces. you can transcode it to wav easily, if you need it.

please note: if you share this on another place, then don’t forget to give credit to the people making this release possible.

Please explain "Bit-Perfect Audio Capture" for LaserDisc PCM

i've downloaded xACT, which comes with shntool and i get the following result on a testfile

shntool [cmp]: warning: WAVE data size differs between these files -- will check up to smaller size
Comparing [/Users/zeropc/Desktop/wav-compare/Audio 2.wav] (0:17.867) and [/Users/zeropc/Desktop/wav-compare/Audio.wav] (0:15.963) :   0% 18% ERROR
shntool [cmp]: error: WAVE data differs at byte offset: 466847

is that okay or bad?

Time

so i did a few testings, like you guys suggested.

i'm on a mac btw ;)

playback testing

1. i tested a dts-cd wav in vlc (latest version) and it plays fine through system speakers

2. the same dts-cd wav in vlc through toslink was a no go. the system settings simply switched the output device for an unknown reason

3. muxed the dts-cd wav to .mka and then vlc played it just fine through toslink and my amplifer saw it as dts and playback was fine

4. same mka file in mplayerx gave me white noise - could be because of an older version i'm using, as the newer version gave me serious playback problems on some movies

digital capture testing

1. i cannot change the gain level when i plug in my optical cable. adobe audition would always jump back to 0db

2. multiple capture of the same file - 3 to be precise and they all looked the same. there was no change in the waveforms hight or what not...

conclusion

i guess the mac is doing bit-perfect capture and output (if used in certain container formats like .mkv/.mka). maybe i try to get myself an external capture device. would the M-Audio Firewire 1814 a good choice?

#update#

i fully watched mad max 3 with my synced laserdisc audio and from time to i switched to the dts-hd 5.1 audio. i like the ld audio better. the mix feels more natural. mind you, i didn't do an extensive comparison ;)

anyway... special thanks to pdb for providing the source file.

Evil Dead 2 (1987) - Original Mono Preservation (Released)
Time

i’ll make it short 😉

the original mono audio for evil dead 2 was never released on dvd and blu-ray for unknown reasons. after numerous re-releases after re-releases it’s clear that we will never get it. however, it doesn’t mean we can get it at all. luckily the good old laserdisc releases where always fortune to have it. with the help of jj666 and myself we can finally enjoy the original monaural audio of this classic movie with the high-def video presentation - if you have the u.s. blu-ray that is 😉

source: evil dead 2 s.e. blood red laserdisc - pcm captured via toslink by myself
synced by jj666 to the u.s. blu-ray (25th anniversary edition)
release format: flac, 16bit dual-mono at 44.1khz
download: -

please note: if you share this on another place, then don’t forget to give credit to the people making this release possible.

Info: Recommended Editions of Disney Animated (and Partially Animated) Features
Time

a sort of preview review for the upcoming blu-ray of the little mermaid was posted on blu-ray.com forums and some screenshots

Hi all,

In all my time as a DVD/Blu-ray reviewer, I've never been more excited than when I came home to the review disc of the 2D Little Mermaid Blu-ray (Region B European) last night. I'm a huge Little Mermaid fan, so it's particularly exciting for me.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I'll be uploading some 1080p PNG images in the next few hours and happy to answer any questions you might have. For now here's my initial thoughts.

The new transfer is exactly that - definitely a new scan and one that shows some big improvements over the last. This has created the slight downside of cel mattes visible around some characters in certain scenes, but this is part of the pre CAPS animation process and unavoidable. Textures are much finer and there is so much more detail in background animations.

I have been particularly dismayed by the use of DNR on some Disney catalogue titles, but I just can't see that much, if any has been used here. It's truly a beautiful image. Some of the animation is crisper and clearer than others - the opening has always been particularly hazy, although in this instance I've no doubt this is by intention.

The new colour timing is fantastic and far more balanced and I dare say accurate than previously. Its as if the white balance has been re-set as a point of reference throughout, as the image looks a little whiter than before, replacing some of that yellow hue that permeated the platinum DVD.

Additionally, I have an original animation cel of a scene of Ariel and Eric and compared to the same frame in the new transfer, its incredible faithful - I'd say just about spot on.

Moving to the new extra features, they are more bountiful than I think we had assumed.

All of the original DVD features are included and to whoever was asking about "The Little Match Stick" girl short - that's in full 1080p now (intro still in SD). The documentary is still presented in window-boxed 480p strangely enough.

The new deleted scene "Harold The Merman" is very short at just a few minutes, but includes the newly recorded audio with Pat Caroll reprising the voice of Ursula. So that's that mystery solved.

The best new feature is the 17 minute long "Howard's Lecture", which includes large snippets of Howard speaking to the assembled disney animators with recollections interspersed from animators and co-directors John Musker and Ron Clements the former of who chokes up while recallsing one Howard anecdote. He is truly missed.

The Carly Rae Jepsen rendition of "Part of Your World" is pretty bad I'm afraid to say.

There is only one new pre-movie trailer is for the "Disney Infinity" game. I would think the U.S. release would have more.

Anyways, hope this sates some of the Mermaid fans. Back in a few hours with PNG's.

Cheers
Ben

blu-ray has the original 1982 theatrical cut with another 7.1 upmix :(

Well good then the audio will be good a couple of ways, so if the theatrical is on BD why the interest in this 1080i file then? this is getting confusing.

i have no interest in the 2002 version. the op has ;)
i only have interest in the ld audio.

Is there a theatrical LD for some better audio? I assume the Signature LD audio I have already is for the longer cut Special Edition.

longer cut? afaik there are only two cuts of the movie. the 1982 version and the 2002 s.e.. unless there is a third version, then the signature edition has the original 1982 cut on it.
