Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

I’m actually thinking about releasing the next version with english tracks only and then including links for all the different dubs and instructions on how to add them.

For 3.0 this I think would be a good choice going forward, if you’re considering it for ESB v2.5, I’d recommend keeping the usual vast array of audio and subtitle choices one last time so as to stay consistent with the final v2.x versions of the other films. If Star Wars v2.5/7 and Jedi v2.5 all have these audio options built in and only Empire doesn’t, it would really stick out. And you know how people can be, we’ll just end up with even MORE questions to answer about what version is correct and why, how do I put this track in, how do I listen to that, how do I mux/demux this or that, I want to watch Empire on my refrigerator’s LCD screen but listen to the Austrailan audio thru my USB phonograph setup and it worked on the other two movies, etc.

There’s AVCHD versions that should each fit on DVD9s I think.
I think there’s also DVD5 versions (not sure how ‘official’ those are).

The DVD5 versions are generally sanctioned by Harmy, BUT once you get down to that point it is not HD anymore, but authored DVDs (as in 480p MPEG2 for playback in standalone DVD players).

I have the 2.7 19.9 gb. Would I be able to burn it into a format that a blu ray player would be able to read?

Yes, you can easily get this into a format that will burn nicely to a Blu-ray recordable disc, though if you intend to play it on that PS4 you mentioned, I remember hearing that it refuses to play any Blu-ray recordable discs… So that’s another hurdle if it’s your only Blu-ray disc player…

Nope, that’s Xbox One!

Thanks for clearing that up for me! Obviously I got the two mixed up, I’ll make sure to keep the correct distinction from now on.

I agree, I have purchased the trilogy on every damn format, multiple times.

I think if you are going to watch it in hi-def, then at the very least go buy the Blu-ray.
You also then have a case to keep your disc in 😉

And a case to replace the cover with 😉

At that point, is it still the same axe, though? Wait, what are we talking about?

While Harmy’s MKVs are often known to push unexpected limits and challenge playback methods that generally seem otherwise capable, it would help greatly for us to first make sure what files you are actually working with. With Star Wars, for instance, did you get it from less controllable public sources like piratebay or our normal sources like the spleen or TP? Is it a 17GB+ sized MKV and is it called v2.5 or v2.7?

When you say you access your networked drive, are you doing so via DLNA, SMB, NFS, etc.? Does the computer access the networked drive in a different listed protocol than the TV/PS4 does? What model TV?

Would you happen to be capable of burning to a Blu-ray disc or connecting a computer straight to your TV (and A/V equipment)? Do you have a Roku, FireTV, Chromecast, etc.?

Anyway, just give us as many specifics like that about your situation as you can, so we can better know how to help you.

Ok. So there is an Empire Steikes back version out there somewhere. Does anyone have any information as to where I can find it?

Team Negative 1 has done a 35mm grindhouse scan of Empire Strikes Back. It is really done well despite some questionable colors.

If you were to download it, as always just make sure you have already legally bought the blu-rays for the films.

Strictly speaking with regards to the 35mm sourced ESB Grindhouse without any Blu-ray footage, would a person honestly STILL be expected to specifically own a Blu-ray copy of the film? Certainly makes sense with Harmy’s work, which heavily uses Blu-ray footage, and to have a copy of the film that uses that source, you should own that source. But for something like this, wouldn’t owning any version of the movie do just as well, or, really, would owning it at all even be necessary, since there’s no true element used for this version that a person could realistically own? Just food for thought, really.

3.0 and up.

Thanks for the quick response. While I will help as I can in Poita’s efforts from here out (LOL, I’m only ever aware of new things here if I see links in the few threads I follow), and would love for you to have better sources with as much of a reduction in delay that donations could allow, after seeing what improvement we could be getting in the short term from the sources you do have at your disposal, I’m elated to know that whatever the wait is for a quality Poita scan won’t be a barrier to v2.5’s release.

While I’ve already got your attention, might we get you to share what tricky scenes you have ahead of you after this Hoth battle? Are the cockpit shots color correctable enough from the Grindhouse to replace the GOUT zooming fixes? Additionally, are there any compositing changes you expect not to tackle in v2.5?

And a question on a completely different level: in v3.0 and up, are you planning to try to restore original scene wipes throughout the trilogy?

When in doubt, duct tape, WD-40 or sharpie it, I guess.

And yes, file this one under “can’t unsee”. Haha, that’s about my only problem with the hands-on aspect of us all having to make up for what Lucasfilm won’t give us, we keep stripping away the magic more and more all on our own by having to over-analyze/scrutinize these classics. Hell, there’s probably been more work put into saving/preserving/reconstructing these films than the man-hours that actually went into the original meticulous creation of them (case in point… these marks).

Holy crap, Harmy. This stuff is looking amazing. I was hopeful for ESB v2.5 before, but seeing just how much of an improvement this update can promise, I now have a burning desire. It was okay before, and better than watching the official releases by far (actually that should go without saying), but this is on another level.

Really looking forward to it. Let us know what we can do to help.

I’ll give it another day or two before creating a private thread, because as far as I know, there is no way to add somebody to a private thread after it has been created. So if you haven’t posted something here by the time I create that thread, you’re out of luck… In other words, speak up now if you want to be included.

i want to be part of the thread

Thanks for quoting that list so I can point out you’re on it.

LOL… man, I’ve been trying to hold my tongue during all of this until it goes private, since all these posts (or should I say increase in posts) accomplish exactly the opposite of the request to drop the thread from the front page. But stuff like this, it is just too much for me.

Since I’m posting anyway, I’m glad to be on the list and am looking forward to the private topic. But seriously, we should probably try to start respecting the request to keep things quiet and all try to hold our thoughts till the private topic starts (unless something hilarious is said, of course). Would anyone be opposed to an official person to send PMs to to get added to the list? I’m not responsible or attentive enough to volunteer, so I’ll leave that to someone else to decide, but anything is better than flooding a thread that doesn’t want attention.

Due to er… new developments over on the Legacy Edition Site, I’ve decided I’m going to take this project underground for a while. Work will continue as normal, just not so publicly.

I’m not really sure if projects like this one will help or hinder Mike’s quest, but just in case it might do the latter, perhaps we should let this topic slide down the list and off the front page for a while…

Don’t know what new concern there is, but I 100% agree in general about this sort of stuff best being done on the down low… Doubly so we should avoid publicly dragging Mike’s name into anything that could hurt his efforts.

Still, what front page do you refer to? Have stuff about the project not be front and center on thestarwarstrilogy.com project website or cease traffic on this thread for a while and get it off the short list of active OT.com threads?
