Not sure this was worth all the sfx work required, but at least it’s done.
I like the Batman music.

Okay then, one last thing. We’ve put off taking the Christmas tree down for a while as the 16 month old just loves it, but tonight ended up being the night, and traditionally we watch The Star Wars Holiday Special while we tear into the remainder of Christmas stuff (it seems fitting), and even though I watched this randomly the other day, the wife insisted we watch it tonight… so, I’ve got two viewings under my belt in 2017 already. Take that how you will.
Edit: By the way, my kid is going to freak out in the morning when she sees all the Christmas stuff is gone… should be interesting.
In no way whatsoever did I expect this to be the current topic once I FINALLY caught all the way back up in this thread. As a resident of Oklahoma, I feel for you when it comes to sudden violent weather. I hope all ends up well and that the substantial home damage is mostly superficial or just looks like it’d be bad but doesn’t end up actually being catastrophic structural damage.
All right, but I still think ending Ridiculous 4 with the full Holiday Special memory haze recap of '77 SW complete with Chewie’s lifeless stare bookends, would be pretty funny (even on redundancy merits alone).
But I think we’ve said as much as is necessary about the canon status of the Holiday Special (I’m not even arguing either way in this post), and since most all I had left to say about the subject is in regards to a different Ridiculous episode, this should really be the last post on the subject (and honestly, a pretty amicable resolution to a Star Wars debate, as we all know how these things can go).
Specifically @TV’s Frink, if you haven’t watched the Holiday Special with Rifftrax, I recommend giving it a look. The shock of the show itself is pretty rough, but the jokes at its expense are great AND they even riff on the original '78 commercials, which is gold in itself. We watch the riffed special at least once a year now, and the pain of the horrible parts is pretty much gone; overall the experience is actually good.
At the same time, it didn’t get the same direct death strike as the rest of the EU, and occasionally even gets a lifeline tossed to it.

"Despite its absence from the relevant press releases, this was widely interpreted as applying to The Star Wars Holiday Special as well. This was partially negated in a 2015 interview with J. J. Abrams."
Also, I assume most of us here aren’t 100% happy with George Lucas, I for one want this to stay canon just to continue to piss him off. Anyway, let’s just agree to keep the Holiday Special in our hearts year round however we choose (with Rifftrax, I think it is pretty classic now), and not muck up Frink’s thread any more.
Frink, thanks for those couple of answers, both make more sense now.

http://www.starwars.com/news/the-legendary-star-wars-expanded-universe-turns-a-new-pageThat has what exactly to do with the Holiday Special? It is supposed to still be canon, and I stand by that until you provide proof other than various fan writings having been invalidated as we all know. Obviously we shouldn’t keep on that here, unless you have some concise example to offer.
Did you read that article? LFL’s new approach has always been very clear. New canon = episodes I-VI and TCW plus anything made from 2014 on. Where is exactly does the HS fit in there? I’d love to know.
Yes, I can and did read, it said it includes those things, not limited solely to them. I said, if you can come back with a concise example that mentions the Holiday Special specifically as part of the EU that got thrown out, that would be acceptable. If you just have speculation without much to back it up, let’s not muck up Frink’s Ridiculous thread with it.
Dominic suggested this addition.
What part? The popcorn? If so, I like it.

And Frink, I mentioned that it was (and is) canon because I didn’t know how to take “for reals”, I wasn’t sure if you meant it wasn’t related to the “real” movies, or if you meant it in a slang way to indicate your own disinterest.
And, in all fairness, it is not.
According to?
I’ve kind of made an unofficial decision to ignore the Holiday Special, both for reals and for these edits.
Though, in all fairness, it is canonical…
Is the despecialised edition fair use?
Not strictly… Lucasfilm (and all related companies) doubtlessly knows about it and has not taken any measures against it, they’ve been pretty lenient toward many kinds of fan productions, but no it is not exactly legal, though it isn’t competing directly with anything they’re actually selling (which is the whole reason this exists, because they WON’T sell the theatrical versions) and we take a very firm stance that anyone who gets the Despecialized Editions should own the commercially available sources used here (the Star Wars Blu-rays) so as to further distance ourselves from lost sales on Lucasfilm’s part. But in the end, justify it as we will, there is no safe provision this is operating under, just Lucasfilm probably not wanting to piss off their fanbase any more than they already have.
I like this scene, TV edge doesn’t strike me as a problem, and the blown out whites really sell it as a dreamy, ethereal sequence (memory haze wouldn’t have the same effect).
Speaking of memory haze… I wonder if somewhere you could work something in from the Holiday Special, where near the end Chewbacca is thinking back with a big ol’ memory haze effect (and everything in his memories was from the perspective of someone observing Chewbacca)… It has been made fun of in other Star Wars parodies and in South Park making fun of the Holiday Special. I’m not sure what you’d use as memories in this case, though… perhaps it would be best saved for a Ridiculous EpIV, and just put the entire sequence in straight from the Holiday Special of his memories of the '77 movie (probably when they’re giving out medals in the final scene). Anyway, more Holiday Special references in Ridiculous would be welcome.
Edit: The part I refer to (his lifeless stare is what really makes this scene gold) https://youtu.be/wJDAmBQ1u2g?t=1h33m2s
At about 01:47:39 I always thought the AT-ST gun positioning (down at Han, Leia, 3PO, R2) sound went longer than it does here on the 5.1… Anyone agree?
I’m enjoying this, though I feel the vehicle sounds significantly overpower the dialog. (Love the David Cross line at the end.)
Also, it should be said, I really like what you did with the Mace Windu lightning scene, I think the effect worked well enough to mix it in, and it is all pretty funny. The Wookie blurring scene works great, and would be fine as a one off, as it looks like they’re all showing their junk on purpose as a group thing, it doesn’t have to imply they’re balls-out-naked all the time.
Is Vader’s last line legible? And anyone have an idea of how to Vaderize the last word?
“Rock” comes in clear enough for me, and I was complaining before… Is this from that Conan scene I found?
I’ll stand corrected on that. But honestly wouldn’t have expected that to be the go-to source.
Harmy, will the shots in the Millennium Falcon cockpit that are overcropped on the BD be replaced with 35mm scans instead of the 97SE in the 2.5 update, or re-done from scratch in 3.0?
The current v2.0 used upscaled GOUT footage to repair the cropped cockpit scenes, not 97SE footage. Harmy has said he’ll be fixing those edges with 35mm scans for v2.5.
Seems appropriate: http://cheezburger.com/1348101/guy-cant-find-his-screen-in-star-wars-return-of-the-jedi-and-its-hilarious
Actually, I may be mistaken, I don’t think they had C-3PO blinking in the 80’s series, it was probably the animated special in The Star Wars Holiday Special (you know, the one where Boba Fett originates from) I was thinking of. Either way, he does blink in a vintage cartoon, worse yet, the Holiday Special is still canonical.
Edit: Okay, let me re-revisit this… Apparently animated C-3PO can’t help but blink, whichever version. I checked the 80’s cartoon and he does blink, but not in the extremely weird and creepy method he does in the Holiday Special. That version of blinking is really, different.
I’m still getting used to having 3PO blink at me. I can almost sleep at night.
He honestly does that in the 80’s cartoon series, it is creepy and weird.
@Faithwyn
So, you’re telling me they can fix the colors of this scene, but not Obi-wan’s creepy leering at Luke?
Go clean up your room.
(Jeez, Star Wars Holiday Special quotes, even from imperial officers, just never fit anywhere…)
That’s pretty much it. RoTJ had a barely distributed temporary v2.0, but it was pretty much just for previewing and then became 2.5 by the time it was actually released.
I don’t know about the exact release dates (and it would be just as much work for me to dig through the threads as you 😉 ).
Ah, I see.
Yeah, no, I wouldn’t expect anyone to look through the threads for me! I was wondering if anyone had the information readily at hand. Sounds like probably not.
That’s OK, I was just curious! Thanks!
Let’s not forget about v2.1 of Star Wars.
Or was this all a ploy set up to bait Frink?
