Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

For those not enjoying captchas, etc. I found that Mega worked surprisingly well (and tons faster than uloz, compared to the free tier), and didn’t deal in captchas. The only issue I had was that after about 3GB downloaded, I’d get an error that chrome ran out of HTML5 storage space. Under Linux (and I’m sure this would work for most OSes), I just had to in Chrome go to chrome://settings/cookies search for Mega and then kill what I found there, then I was good for up to another 3GB. This being due to Mega through “browser downloads” storing stuff in a cache before writing to the destination, and not clearing out completed downloads. Apparently their app doesn’t have the problem, if one is so inclined, though this really is the only time I’ve used their site (impressed, overall, actually), and I’m not about to install extra stuff for just one download. Anyway, hope that helps someone.

Hello,

To have so many email addresses you’re sending to that a site designed to announce something to many email addresses flags you as possible spam, that’s really only a good sign to the popularity of the OOT… And those of us in-the-know here are really only a subset of those that care about the originals. Kind of makes you think.

Since this isn’t a normal broad release, but rather something quick for frothing purists who are in-the-know to consume before TFA (and also give feedback on, of course), I don’t see much reason to go out of your way to make concessions for patching in foreign language dubs. On the other hand, burning to disc doesn’t matter as much to me now as it once did, though I’m sure there’ll be some people who either want to bring it and show it somewhere, or continue to toil with largely dead-end alternatives to having a good media player attached to their screens and would need a disc to fall back on; so instructions for making a disc would likely be worthwhile (though we should disclaim that there is an expected level of technical competence with this preview release and limit how much effort we put into supporting the burning process, until something more official comes out). My only question is, if you’re encoding this as you did the AVCHD, did you really mean it when you said it would be for burning to a Blu-ray disc (what about DVD9)? Or should I say, is a BD ISO just for burning to BD, or would it also work with a DVD9?

I’d be very happy with a nice, straightforward mkv.

Her only complaint was the lack of female characters. I quote:
“The only other female was the aunt and all she did was put some cabbage in a blender and then got killed!”

OMG spoiler alert!!! 😉

In all fairness, her death was unrelated to the cabbage. Unless she offered some to the stormtroopers off screen…

I'm not saying it'd be worthy of an official boycott, but it would certainly be worthy of a sizeable collection of uninterested shrugs, to the same effect.  Why would you watch the official release if you've already had something for years that's better in every way?

Don't forget, even if it isn't us rushing to buy a perfect release, those of us that support the ideals of the Despecialized Edition would buy an official OUT as a legal-peace-offering against outright piracy, since it would probably be a primary source for a future DeEd.

Looks like variety used clips from trailers, I think documentaries and entertainment news coverage are allowed to use trailer clips without going through the clearance stuff.

Crap, hadn't considered that... and it would explain the aspect ratio differences between the SW and Empire clips.  But still, it would be nice to hear that straight from them.

Even if they just said out loud that they were happier using something that wasn't SE footage, it'd still help the cause ever so slightly.

Interview clips from D23 about TFA. But the OT clips used, while definitely not HD (and in fact are quite grainy), are definitely not the SE's from what I could tell from a quick watch.  Interesting...

Good catch.  While not something straight from Disney or Lucasfilm, so it isn't as telling, they usually only want approved SE footage used, so I am really not sure where Variety got these clips.  What I will say, while not sharp and pretty grainy, it is obvious it is both non-SE and from an uncleaned film scan (with nicks, scratches, dirt and other damage).

No idea what the story is with this source, but I will say the color timing looks pretty darn good.  Take the falcon cockpit at 1:07, interior at 1:10, and the cleaning/hologram scene at 1:23 seems to get things right in the background that I've complained about with Harmy's...

Well, I just put a comment on that video, go give it a "like" if you want to get our questions some attention.

Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

A lot less blown out, I think this is a pretty good starting point.

BTW, has there been any mention anywhere of the white tape on the arm of the foreground trooper on the left?  I've never noticed that detail before...  I wonder if it is something to keep the costume together or if it was to cover up something problematic...  Do other Stormtrooper costumes have this?

The question of course is, whether the detail was actually visible in the 1977 prints. You can of course bring out more detail by altering the color palette, but that's essentially doing another SE.

I think both Harmy and I have the intention to try to match the colors of the original negative, working from reference prints or in my case a reference frame provided by Mike Verta. The results can be quite different, as is evident from the following comparison:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/139124

Which is closer to the colors of the actual negatives? I leave that to your expert opinions/tastes, although I'm aware Harmy's been at it a lot longer than I have...

While that doesn't look bad, I will caution that the guys in the extreme background are starting to tip toward looking like the legendary "Lobsterman" SE mess up.  Color corrections always have these little give and takes (especially with a screwy source like the SW BDs), so it is really hard to know when to cut your losses.  I've also been wanting to point out that in your examples, while brighter and maybe more natural of a palette overall, the white Stormtrooper armor is more often than not getting blown out, resulting in quite a bit less definition.
