If you want another angry doctor, maybe some clips from Doc Martin…
If you want another angry doctor, maybe some clips from Doc Martin…
Almost a shame that 3P0 is Gob, as that would be a fun fit for one of those medical droids “I’ve made a huge mistake…”
Abbott and Costello?
50GB M-disc Blu-ray is a hell of an impressive archival jump to take (are you going to do something that expensive for every version bump?), I didn’t even know till right now that they’d succeeded in making double layer M-discs, much less in Blu-ray. I bet I’d need a newer M-disc burner to do double layer Blu-ray…
Edit: Jesus… they have 100GB M-Discs, too…
I know.
I agree with Frink - though I must say your guestimate is surprisingly accurate. 😃
Well, I think they were so coy about how they referred to the GOUT release originally for a few reasons, namely deflecting the backlash of selling an inferior product as the featured film, and not least of all George’s distaste for the version and not wanting to admit he was giving in at all (and possibly trying to win people over to his version by “quality” comparison alone). Disney, if they don’t put out anything as relatively shoddy, doesn’t have any need to save face, they can boldly pronounce that they are bringing back the version we’ve asked for and be the hero. At the same time they’ll be in a tough position on what to call it, considering how many (or, rather, few) people know and care about the title change from before it hit home video, but, at the same time, knowing what is right. If they want to be correct, they’ll revert completely to what was on film in '77, but their options are somewhat open as long as the rest of the film is fine, as they’ll still be the hero to the majority. If they do, in fact, do it right and use the original scroll, they can pretty easily compromise on the case/set naming if they include the 2011 version (even more fitting if they were “Bonus Discs”), as they could, without much conflict, say Episode IV and A New Hope to refer to the film in general while a version carrying that title is included. That would probably be the best, easiest route for them to go.
This is thread for Episode 3 not 4.
Agreed, this is just how I inspired… myself.
After posting this in the SSE thread, I realized we really need a spaceflight to go plaid in Ridiculousness… Let’s make this happen.
No one gives me the raspberry… Oooooh, Pi! Yum!
While yes, there may be a bit too much yellow (in the star destroyer, mostly), I think this might be about the best attempt yet.
Okay, I give up, what is FE?
The recently released official Celebration itinerary has the screening listed as “Star Wars: A New Hope”. All that can really be inferred from that is that they want to be consistent with TFA’s downplaying of the episode numbers, but the fact that Disney isn’t squeamish about switching around the title of a film from before they acquired LFL gives me a small amount of hope that they’d be willing to walk back more the extreme Lucasisms in the future.
Related to all this (in that, I wonder what is even available for them to play at the event), does anyone know what version of the OT was played in those theatrical marathons when TFA released? I’ve been wondering if it was fairly new DCPs for the 2011 versions, or if they still have to theatrically distribute the '97 SEs.
Heh heh… Gob3po out of no where… very funny lines there. And I’m liking the idea of the scene so far.
Yeah, his effort was a great proof of concept, but color correction really should be done as far up the line as possible.
Exactly the other reference I had in mind.
That colour correction looks way too blue.
You blue it up!
Well, I’m more hopeful of Legacy as a proof of concept than as a final commercial product. That is, to show what is capable to produce with what nth generation prints are still out there in public hands, and give the rights holders a tangible baseline to realize how good of a product they could have on their hands if they were to restore from their original elements, especially with the resources of a competent and dedicated restorationist (whether they’d fully entrust that to Mike, which his work may justify, or, probably, use him as a consultant in conjunction with seasoned or in-house restorationists).
How many numbers-weighing execs do you think look at the aggressively shiny and colorful Blu-ray video and understand how much room there is to improve on it (video/audio elements alone; I think even Hollywood laymen know of the general SE controversy) without stark comparisons shown to them in the brief moments they have when their attention isn’t being pulled between who knows how many other seemingly more pressing and important projects? Show them succinctly what is wrong with their product, how much better of a product they have available right now and how even better than that they could make themselves, leading to an understanding of just how much such a strikingly improved product they could have would be worth (well above any restoration costs, and, of course, the comparable “loss” of just continuing with the status quo of their current product).
I’m not saying I think Mike’s version will be the next official release, nor do I necessarily think he’d land a gig restoring the film for real, but if he does get his presentation and even a few execs, with solid facts laid in front of them, come to realize just what possibilities are open to them and it starts some wheels turning, it would still all be worth it.
Well, that’s just an insane difference. Congrats and thanks.

I’m mostly liking it, I think showing the assassin prepping builds things up pretty nicely, and it mixes together well, though I also liked an earlier suggestion of showing a few assassins setting up. With the single crosshair view, I guess one assassin makes sense, though it would be funny if you could get like two or three crosshair circles wandering around the screen and settling on him (though it sounds like you had grief enough getting the effect to where it is, so I’m sure this would be asking too much), but the ultimate pay off of this approach would be the additional humor of hearing a few extra and distinct gunshots, to make sure he’s dead. Anyway, I’m pretty pleased with where that is going.
Actually, here’s a different thought… what if after the first gunshot, you put in some Jar-Jar audio clips that might make it sound like he is shot and disoriented and then another shot puts him down (immediately followed by the thud)? Along the lines of * BANG* “… icky goo…” * BANG* * THUD*. Or him screaming hysterically or something. Him being annoying one last time would seem fitting.
Watching this cut, I don’t know why but it kind of feels like something is a bit off with the “weesa free” party transition… What do you guys think? Maybe it is the party music going too long after transitioning back to somber footage.
The angel carving bit is spot on, btw.
I’m sorry, killing him that way just takes me out of the comedy. A blaster shot is more funny.
JEDIT:Showing the assassin before the deed may also be giving away the punchline of Jar Jar’s death.
Maybe, but with the assassin he’s currently going with, I’m liking the subtle story layer it suggests that she’s killing him for the good of us all due to foreknowledge of a terrible future he’s at fault for.
Maybe they were getting the walls redone that day… You know how those government contractors are…
Guys it’s not like he wrote the damn movie. Sometimes when you work as a creative, you end up doing some projects that aren’t exactly Oscar worthy. The guy needs to make money somehow.
Being in a forum birthed from a love of Star Wars, this is the best place to bring that up, since no one thought Star Wars could amount to anything of worth before it was done. You can contribute the most amazing, professional work to a project, but you never know how the eventual product containing your efforts will be received… except for the fact it was done by Asylum, of course…
Guys, you are trashing Mike’s work on his own thread.
Honestly the opposite of how I was hoping this would go. I try to ignore the track record of his day job and focus on Legacy, which is work in a league of its own.
Speaking of mverta (shocking, I know), does anyone know what he is up to in addition to Legacy? Is he on an actual work project that’s keeping him from talking here, or have there been no updates purely because he shouldn’t talk about it right now?
He did the music for Independents’ Day. Oh, and some VFX for it. WAIT, he’s also IN it! Now I have to watch it.
Other than that, he could be doing anything.
Sometimes I try to ignore the kinds of things that make up his filmography… Other times, I differently hope that this Legacy project actually gets accepted or gets him to be part of a real restoration, so he can have a crowning jewel in his career, or a launching point into higher profile projects…
