Comics. (Not the comedians)

I've just started reading Uncanny X-Men.  I've wanted to for years, and now the time has come.   I just got myself the Marvel Masterworks collection, so I'm starting with the Giant-Size X-Men Second Genesis Issue (#1 from 1975).

While everything you said was technically correct, it is a little confusing.  Giant Size X-Men #1 is a great place to start with Giant Size X-Men as it is the first of two issues of Giant Size X-Men (unless you count #3-#4 that came out 30 years later).  What you're really reading is (Uncanny) X-Men starting in issue 94, but not before kicking it off with Giant Size X-Men #1.

Which is a great place to jump into X-Men.  I said this on the first page somewhere, but 100 is about where the Phoenix stuff starts and it stays, in my opinion, really good for a couple of years through that section.  Hopefully you stay on through Inferno.

How many MMasterworks did you get?  They can be pretty pricey, and I can't remember how many collections they did/how man y issues they reprinted.

What do you LIKE about the EU?

I have a question, Anchorhead. Do you have any interest in exploring the comics side of the EU, or are you strictly going for the novels?

I'm really just interested in the novels. I very much prefer that depth-of-story that novels provide.  I've seen some comics that seemed interesting for their stories, but I'm not really a comic book guy.  Even when I was a kid it was only a peripheral interest.

That said;  There is one exception.  The newspaper strips from the late 70s\early 80s are an everyday read for me.  I really like those.  One of the members here has an excellent site devoted to their history & preservation.

In fact, I'm pretty sure the two lesser Star Wars nerds in my office are tired of me sending them the strip every morning, along with my commentary.  ;-)

Anyway, in answer to your question;  Novels, with a side of newspaper strips, makes up the EU I have any interest in.

 Give him time.  ;)

I just listened to a podcast interview with Tim Zahn the other day where he talked about this exact concept, and how he purposely approaches his stories this way.

 Link, please?

The specific comment starts around 22:18, but there are interesting bits sprinkled throughout, depending on what you're into.

Thanks for the link, that was very enjoyable.  Zahn seems like a cool- normal guy.  I really wish I'd listened to this a week ago though- as he was in my neck of the woods signing his new book.  I think I would have gone and met him had I realized he was here.

Drat!

How would you have done ROTJ?

There's a part of the duel when Vader has Luke's sabre. He's got his own red sabre in a hand, but there was some mock up that showed him handing actually both his sabre and luke's both of them turned on. I think this could be more menacing; and what's more, perhaps when Luke attacks Vader in anger, he could grab Vaders lightsabre and defeat his father with that weapon just as a way to increase that feeling of "everything's going bad" you say you wanna give to the movie.

I don't think that Luke going around with Red and Vader with Blue for most of the movie is a good idea.  But if Vader had both sabres, and Luke force ripped one from him, and it happened to be red, and Luke used that in his rage to beat down Vader...

That would be pretty cool.  This is Dark Side Luke.  If he happened to grab Vader's dark side sabre... it would be a powerful moment.

Good idea.

Certainly by the end of the story I don't think we're supposed to be sure that Luke "falling to the dark side" was more than an act that Palpatine sort-of didn't really fall for.

I think Luke investigated the Dark Side, maybe put himself in a position to be seduced by it, but never really strayed from his mission to infiltrate the Emperor's confidence, learn his secrets of immortality so that he could take him out for good.

At least that's how I made peace with it.  If I'm supposed to think that Luke really did turn dark, then your argument is 100% valid.

Actually, it's probably to put the screws to me.  I really do want to be ignored by him so I can be one of the cool kids...  He knows IT'S TEARING ME APART, LISA!

After all, I did make the DTS 4EVA thread: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/DTS-is-teh-best-Dolby-and-John-Tesh-is-TEH-SUCK/topic/11838/
