How did you imagine The Star Wars Prequels before they came out?

Go look in the rewrite forum for threads with this exact same (give or take) title as well as many other that will answer your question.

Oh, snap!... I wasn't aware of this forum section: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/forum.cfm/Script-Writing-and-Re-writing/forum/21/ . Never noticed it...

I'm sorry. And... now I feel kinda awkward...

Can I somehow delete this thread?

I'll confess- the rewrite forum maybe isn't the most natural place to find "what did you originally expect" kind of threads.  But, if you think about it, their placement there sort of makes them more constructive as opposed to just general whining/pining.

The Darth Vader/Anakin reveal
Time

I think this is a relatively important thread for this forum and no one really ever engaged with Johannus.

My take on the unreveal is this, and if you're paying attention it will more-or-less look like the one that I have posted here in other threads.

Anakin is very Lancelot-ish.  It's not that he appears to be a little shady or a little less dedicated than Obi-Wan... he's almost too dedicated.  He's the shining star and the unfallible one.  He's the greatest among them... Until he falls to the Dark Side.

But this post is more about the reveal.

Again, I've said most of this before... but here it is again.  There is another Vader.  As Johannus said, not Vader exactly as we know him, but a close prototype.  Anakin fights him (for reasons I won't go into here, but they're not that good- it's clear that Dark Anakin wants to kill him), damages him, but Obi-Wan stops him from killing him.  They argue, Anakin's view being distorted by his turn to the Dark Side.  This is when Obi-Wan realizes the depths to which he's fallen.  He tries to talk Anakin down.  The argument leads to a fight.  This fight then leads to a duel to the death.  The fight brings Obi-Wan to the brink and he taps into the Dark Side which gives him a slight upper hand (the theoretical high ground) and he delivers a fatal blow to Anakin- knocking him off a catwalk above a molten pit.  Obi-Wan realizes what he's done- what he's momentarily become- and reaches for his friend.  (Or does he?)  Perhaps Obi-Wan says that together they can bring him back from the Dark Side.  Perhaps Anakin realizes that he will never be free from it.  Perhaps he let's go.  Instead maybe Anakin doesn't trust Obi-Wan as he comes toward him.  Maybe also, Obi-Wan, crushed with grief, decides to put his friend out of his misery and cut the railing supporting him.  Maybe he simply does nothing.  I'm not sure yet.

But the important bits- Darth Vader gets away.  Anakin dies.  Obi-Wan is responsible for his death.  Obi-Wan, returns to his friends- to Mrs. Skywalker.  To preserve the memory of his friend (and just maybe to ignore his own guilt in the matter) he begins the lie- Darth Vader murdered the Jedi hero Anakin Skywalker.  Anakin's lightsabre is placed somewhere for heroes.

The tragedy is complete.  The end.

11) "I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine" and then........nothing.

I spent a few minutes searching because I recall a decent conversation on this point a little while ago. Not finding it, I will quickly summarize:

Ben's death catalyzes Luke. That's what he meant, and that definitely came true.

It's an interesting point but I always thought it was even simpler than that. By more powerful, I always assumed Obi Wan was telling Vader that he will survive death and have greater but unknown influence through the Force.

I think the soundtrack proves my point.

If you compare the list of disavowers here against the list of saga folks here

I must protest. I am not "saga folk". I don't hate the prequels (once properly fanedited, still below par, blah blah...) but I disavow the "saga", the "tragedy of Darth Vader" and showing the movies to others in episode order. I realise that without completely disavowing them you will get some PT in your OT, but I do my best to ignore that. It's not black and white for most of us (and I find it hard to believe it ever really was).

Hey, I'm not the one that volunteered to be on that list.

12) "Idealistic crusade" - what exactly?  The Clone War was not a conflict based on idealism.  And "crusade" seems to imply a conflict based on religion.  You could argue that this refers to Jedi vs Sith, but this was never made public knowledge (the general public do not know the true nature or identity of the Emperor).

Hmm... good points! I'll have to add that to my list of PT questions.

But I really don't think you have much to worry about as far as OT.com becoming more Saga oriented.  We're still pretty much a minority here.

Depending on what you mean by "pretty much a minority" I don't agree. Unless by "pretty much" you actually mean "Not really, but sort of close. From a certain point of view." If you compare the list of disavowers here against the list of saga folks here then you'll see it's about equal. In fact, you'll see that both lists even both have a TV's Frink. Wait, what? (He voted against the PT before he voted for it.)

Anyways, it's probably gone from <10% to closer to 50% in recent years. Yes, maybe you're still a 49% minority... but that doesn't really matter much to me. That change has occured as older members have dropped off and newer younger members have joined the site. It's also happened as long time members have given up the fight. I know you haven't been here that long so you haven't observed that first hand. I have. It disappoints me. That's all I'm trying to say.

We read the Jedi Prince series when we were kids and I guess we just never quite fully recovered.

You're saying Jedi Prince made you daffy and unable to judge correctly?

You know, I don't take issue with skyjedi or Puggo coming over here and sharing their distaste for the prequels because all they are doing is sharing their opinions of the movies.  I don't hear either of them calling our opinions wrong though.

Sorry, I thought I was riffing off of your comment about the Jedi Prince series. Perhaps I mistook your meaning. What did you mean by bringing up Jedi Prince?

I'm sorry but I didn't take too kindly to being told that I'm unable to judge correctly because I like the prequels.  I don't think it's anybody's right to say who's judgement is correct but you may have just been being sarcastic and if that's the case than I misread your sarcasm and may have over reacted.  If so then I apologize.  My Jedi Prince comment was intended as a sarcastic response to your initial comment because I really didn't want this thread to turn into a argument about the prequels.

Many apologies. As I said, I thought I was more or less repeating what you said. I certainly wasn't trying to offend you. I thought you said something funny and I was just restating it.

Except that it's a little smaller than that and not that color and doesn't say DELL on it anywhere. But other than that it is very similar.

You mean smaller as in for midgets?

Having 178 games permanently installed is nice. Around 40% or more of those are torrented. Actual computer games, not emulators such as Dolphin.

So you're a dick and a pirate?  I just want to be clear on who we're dealing with here.

Easy! Bingowings is reading this thread!

In those terms, I think the notion that no one has made a better film than Citizen Kane in the past 70 years to be ridiculous.

No one has made a more energetic or more complete film. That's it's staying power. Probably the most "complete" film ever shot. The cinematic kitchen sink.

What do you mean by "complete"? Because I, for one, feel that it is too short. I would like to see more of Kane's life. I feel like he gets old too fast and even so, we don't get to see more than a few moments from each phase of his life. I would love to see more of Xanadu, both the building of it and the completed structure.

And I can't say I follow you to 'energetic' either. If energetic were a category, I think the Fred film would have won something. Fred Movie Trailer

I know you said feral, but obviously it would kill the intelligent ghouls as well. Eden explains that it will kill any mutations, including just about everyone who wasn't born in a radiation free environment like the vaults. Which explains why it kills you if you drink it.

Well, I obviously didn't think it through. Good thing I accidentally turned it in. :)

How would YOU re-do the prequels?

2. I've been trying to figure out how to have Anakin turn into Darth Vader without it being particularly obvious on screen. An idea I had is for Anakin to go into a cave ,like the darkside cave in 'Empire'. He would enter as Anakin, but exit as Darth Vader. I'm not sure whether or not that could be conveyed visually though.

I think any attempt at preserving the surprise that does not feature the on-screen apparent death of Anakin is wasting its time.

If there is any ambiguity about Anakin's fate, and if there's any mystery as to the true identiry of Vader, then any audience over 5 will have it solved in a parsec. (<- space/time joke)

That is, unless you avoid the Anakin turns to the Dark Side bit all together which begs the question of why are you telling this story in the first place?

Someone else has to be around that you assume is the Vader that Obi-Wan mentions in A New Hope. Or else Obi-Wan won't make any sense. You have to frame you Episode 3 so that Obi-Wan's notes in Episode 4 at least ressemble the truth.

Unless your last name is Lucas.
