Space War, Hyperspace, Fuel, etc... How it all works (or doesn't)
Time

Excuse me while I carry on this conversation with myself.

RE: Unlimited Space Travel.

I guess it does take "time" and "some kind of measureable energy or fuel" to get around in the Star Wars universe, but a lot of other Sci-Fi does seem to take advantage of "worm holes" or "jump points" etc... to make space warfare a little more like earth based warfare.  So, is Star Wars nearsighted for not thinking this through, or is it bold to peel back the layer and skirt the direct translation of 1-1 earth warfare to space warfare?

2. The Star Wars galaxy seems to be full of "land" but not all of it is good.  I know they were going for a Wild West motif there, and maybe there's something to be said for that.  I was about to say "Whatever the star 'Wars' were about, it wasn't about 'land!'  But maybe the nice hospitable planets are full of people and it's just the wastes of Hoth and Tatooine and Dagobah that have so much available real estate.

Where did the Mon Calamari come from?
Time

Where did the Mon Calamari come from?

My first guess is: The Art Department.

#2 is: The Marketing Department.

and D, of course,

D: The Appetizer menu.

But seriously, when you see the fleet at the end of ESB, it's kind of sad and small and lonely.  The rebels are on the run- they have no home.  But then, in RotJ, they seem to have been bolstered by some fresh meat (appetizer pun not intended, but welcome) having joined up.  It's hard to say who else besides the Mon Calamari have joined the fight since we last saw the rebellion, but it is safe to say that they are recently on board, right?

Would that be a cutting board?  *snigger*

Anyways, I'm not going to be surprised to hear that the tale has been covered in some kind of EU story, but it had me thinking the other day...  It's a rather large plot point and the movie doesn't stop to talk about it at all.

How very non-Prequel like, not to bash us in the face with it and all.

How have you fine gentlemen (not to mention the ladies) interpreted this in the past?  Or, like me, did you not really think about it for the past 29 years?

(notice I already made all of the calamari jokes, so you don't have to!)

Which pre '99 EU Book is this?
Time

The scene starts on page 65 of the 1996 paperback Black Fleet Crisis 1: Before the Storm.  Han goes to visit Luke in Vader's Magical Shrinking Happy Family Castle (not really called that, but close enough) and Luke explains why Yoda and Ben were hermits and how they were so powerful in the Force that they couldn't take out Vader or Palpatine because it would be too close to the Dark Side to exert their powerful will on the Universe that way.

Interesting stuff.

I checked books 2 and 3. Book 2 is the odd one where the different characters get different sections of the book. That is to say that the first 120ish pages are about Lando and whomever is with him. Luke is in section 2, but it starts with him already in the thick of things. Book 3 starts with Luke on some freighter on his way to somewhere. (Amazing, my attenion to detail!) So I think I've ruled out Black Fleet Crisis. I also cracked Crystal Star, which starts with the Solo kids being kidnapped, so I thouhgt it might be that one. But Luke magically appears on the MF for his first appearance in the book. So, no dice.

I was talking to my brother and he pointed out something that seems rather obvious now that he's said it. The battle wouldn't go to ground unless you had intention to occupy. Maybe you want to use it as a staging base or maybe there's a resource there you want to capture. Maybe you want to hold the inhabitants hostage or slave... But if you just want to neutralize the enemies encampment... you'd just bomb it. Probably from space.

I remember a scene at the beginning of an EU book where Leia finds Luke hanging out on Coruscant in Darth Vader's secret castle bemoaning the fact that he's now too close to the Force to go off and do anything irresponsible like have an adventure.

At least that's my memory of it.

Does anyone know what book this in?  I thought it might be the beginning of the Black Fleet Crisis or the Corellian Trilogy, but I just checked those and I didn't find this this scene.

Thanks!

I cannot disobey my master
Time

Sorry, I tried to google the quote but that was as close as I could come.

I've never fully understood the leash that Vader is on.  Without ever getting into it, the OT makes it seem that there is some kind of magical or legal binding on Vader to keep him from betraying Palpatine.  This line in particular almost makes it sound like an explanation would be forthcoming at some point in time...  I've heard they were working on a Prequel trilogy... I'm sure a totally satisfactory explanation will be given therein.  :)

Palpatine implies in this scene that if Luke used the Dark Side to destroy Vader, that Luke's will would be magically sapped and that he would be his new apprentice.  In my opinion, Luke does tap into the Dark Side to defeat Vader, but stops short of killing him.  It doesn't seem to affect Luke in any immediate kind of way.

It just makes me wonder what Lucas/Kasdan meant by that line.  I'm fine with the assumption that they were, at this point in time, just putting in pretty words without a lot of meaning... but I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt.
