Skyfall Discussion (Spoilers Big and Small)

Wow, didn't expect my joke to get such a big response.

What joke?

I'm responding to how the 3rd act of Skyfall was dumb and doesn't make as much sense as Home Alone.

TV's Frink said:

Wait, is this a serious discussion comparing a James Bond movie and Home Alone?

...

Or am I missing something, other than the silly poster?

Have you seen the movie?  If not, and this is the spoiler thread, the last 45 minutes of Skyfall is essentially the last 30 minutes of Home Alone.

Well M and Kincade were with him so the connection isn't that good.

I don't think the comparison is the bit that he was the only one home, but that he rigged his house with what was in it, just like Kevin did.

But here's the stupid thing- Kevin's just a kid without access to anything other than paint cans, string, and micro machines.  (and the other stuff he rigged his house with).  He does the best he can... because he's a kid.  Now, I can't remember- is there a reason he doesn't call the cops?

Skyfall- Bond can lead Silva and his thugs anywhere, and he has (apparently) some amount of time to plan it out and get the suplies he needs.  I'm sure whatever guns, bombs, tanks, exploding pens he wanted he could get... he's James Bond.  Q is helping him.  And he doesn't even show up to the house with guns?  Or ammo?  WHAT?!?  They have half a box of shotgun shells and one shotgun.  Because Bond, who apparently doesn't want to or deserve to live, didn't think to bring guns to a gunfight.

Most Bond movies end with Bond having to improvise on the spot with what he's got (including at least one gadget that Q gave him 2 hours ago whose use now becomes apparent).  The odds are often against him, and he always wins, but he'd be an idiot to intentionally create an impossible odds scenario.  He usually has an hour or less to save the world, so he doesn't really have time to get whatever resources he wants...

But in Skyfall, he has EVERY opportunity to get whatever resources he wants.  He stops to get the car (which was beautiful and fun, despite the fact it makes little sense) but he didn't bother to get anything else?

And why was M actually in the house when this happened?  Couldn't she have retreated to the church as soon as the baddies showed up?  Couldn't she have been in New Hampshire?  Silva didn't so much as track M to the house as follow Q's bread crumbs there, so she didn't have to actually be there, right?

Anyone make the move yet?

I bought 2 new W7 laptops this summer and I'm eligible to get the upgrade for $15.  Has anyone done that yet?  I'm curious if I can dual-boot the upgrade to check it out a little before I commit to it.

Other than that, check this out: http://www.redmondpie.com/this-extensive-list-of-windows-8-keyboard-shortcuts-will-help-you-adapt-to-the-new-interface/

I think you guys should really spin off into a skyfall thread [spoilers allowed].

Because it isn't!!

However (this is where I get positive) I did think that it was extremely clever and totally surprising that while I thought I was watching the continuation of a James Bond prequel, I was actually watching a stealth reboot of one of my childhood favourite series. When they showed Bond's parents' graves and they said Peter and Kate Mccallister, my mind was literaly blown! So, they finally confirmed that Bond is, in fact, a code name given to each 007 they recruit and that this Bond was, in fact, once Kevin Mccallister! GENIUS!

Nobody took the bait in the other thread, so let me just post this:

THE PRESSURE TO COME UP WITH GOOD SPOILER TAGS IS GETTING TO ME

Want to watch the world burn, or want to watch M die?  I'm fine with a villain that wants to watch the world burn, but that's a separate goal from killing M.

If his only goal (I'm not saying it wasn't (nor am I saying it was)) was just to kill M, and then himself... are you saying that he won?  Give or take 5 minutes?  What kind of Bond film is this???

I think a villain that kills M in the middle of the piece, and then goes on to do whatever else he has planned is a scarier villain than one that walks up to an old mansion in daylight with 10-15 goons and a helicopter.

LET'S JUST FACE IT, NOBODY DOES SPOILER TAGS BETTER THAN 005

STOP MAKING FUN OF MY SMALL SPOILERS, 005, IT'S JUST COLD IN HERE

You are mistaken!  The names on the internet bit was all part of his revenge on M.  Once he had his revenge, and she was dead, there was something else he wanted... right?  That huge operation of his had more to do than just kill his old boss, right?  I mean, I've had some terrible bosses...

I THINK MINE STILL HAD SOME LEGITIMATE SPOILERS, AND NOT JUST SILLY SPECULATION

GIANT SPOILERS OF DEATH

But why would Bond be followed home if the bird was the target?

END SPOILERS OF DOOM

EVEN BIGGER SPOILERS THAN 005's

He wouldn't have... Silva could have continued with whatever his other goals were (did he have any?), and a refocused Bond and Ralph Fiennes could have worked to stop him.

I know we would have lost the Kevin Mccallister reveal, which would have sucked, but I think the movie as a whole would have been less ridiculous.  Maybe you can have Tim Curry follow him around and ask about his parents.

OKAY, THE SPOILERS WEREN'T THAT BIG AFTER ALL, BUT IF YOU'RE DISAPPOINTED, IT'S YOUR FAULT FOR BUYING THE HYPE

MINOR SKYFALL SPOILERS AHEAD

The third act saved the movie. Otherwise I would have put it below Quantum of Solace. Silva was an interesting villain, but we barely go to know him, and his motivations felt a little underdeveloped/rushed.

Really?  I thought the third act was the worst part.

MAJOR SPOILERS

I think it would have been much better had the old bird died at the courthouse (or whatever it was) and the third act could have followed from there.

END MAJOR SPOILERS

I figured it would be safe when I saw a lot of the spoilers marked. It's all right though, I tend to do this a lot by accident anyway.

You're right, that does send something of a mixed message.  I started putting the spoilers in line, but figured I was in dodgy territory and just needed to mark the whole thing.

And I'm totally kidding about the Kevin Mccallister thing, so don't worry about that one.

Dude, you have unmarked spoilers. Thanks for that, I expected to be able to read the parts of your review that didn't have capital letters preceding the parts :/. Whatever, I'm a glutton for punishment anyway.

Dude, it says MINOR SPOILERS FOLLOW at the very top.  I think that covers the whole thing.

Sorry about the Kevin Mccalister thing, that was epic.

Skyfall (2012)

...was a movie warning its audience that they were going to go to hell.

*SPOILERS*

They said "Sometimes the best way is the old fashioned way."

"What's your hobby?"  "Resurrection," says Bond.

"Like most great ladies, she has her secrets."

Bond gets wounded in the chest, slits it with a knife and blood comes out.

"I look at the world...and it frightens me."

Then they said something like "It's never too late to turn back."

And then the villain (who was a demon), said "You're hurt!  Let's end it together" and aims the gun at both of their heads.  But it doesn't work- Bond comes in to save the day.  The villain screams and collapses on the floor and Bond holds the wounded person- in a CHURCH.

Edit: They put crosses in the opening credits.

*END SPOILERS*

I'm intrigued and trying to follow your logic.  The above bullets don't form a complete thought in my head... what did each have to do with the audience going to Hell?

Skyfall- Maybe a 6.5/10.   MINOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT

I'm not very upset about this one, but it didn't really do much for me.  I thought some of the scenes were done well, and others not so much.  I had the same reaction to MINOR SPOILER bond girl's past as a sex slave as 005.  It made me think of the scene in the shower with Vesper in CR where he MINOR SPOILER, just sits in the shower and puts his arm around Vesper while she cries.

This was my reaction to it: either James Bond is a fantasy character that hits every unnamed target he shoots at (boss fights last longer) and survives 300 ft falls into shallow pools, can drive/pilot anything, shrugs off bullets and never ages- all in a Tuxedo with perfect hair... or he's something more real, who gets old, gets shot by accident, only gets a gun from the quartermaster, and has the PM asking whether he's relevant in today's cyberworld.  In other words- he's Jason Bourne.

In this movie, he seems to alternate betwixt these two and you're never quite sure which one you're seeing.  Back to the sex-slave girl- in one scene, the gritty reality of the dark and nasty things that real bad guys do to real people in our real world, and in the next scene she's just a hot chick that's wanted Bond since the moment she saw him.  (Just like every other chick.)

Do these movies take place in the real world, or not?

However (this is where I get positive) I did think that it was extremely clever and totally surprising that while I thought I was watching the continuation of a James Bond prequel, I was actually watching a stealth reboot of one of my childhood favourite series.  When they showed Bond's parents' graves and they said Peter and Kate Mccallister, my mind was litteraly blown!  So, they finally confirmed that Bond is, in fact, a code name given to each 007 they recruit and that this Bond was, in fact, once Kevin Mccallister!  GENIUS!

As I said on facebook- not better than Casino Royale and not more enjoyable than Battleship.

I could go on about the plot holes and contrivances that took me out of the film (I think, due to the mixed tone of serious real world/fantasy) but you can find those elsewhere.

Conclusion- too silly to be serious, too serious to be fun.

P.S. "Haha! Take that! He's ROBIN, FRINK'S MOTHER!!!" Didn't work for me here either.  But the last 10 seconds were cool, if a bit headscratching when accounting the logical implications.

The ultimate downfall of the prequels is that they were completely subservient to the OT.

While the new movies will pick up threads from either or both sagas, it's important to not constrict them to trying to explain or connect every little detail to the OT like the PT did.

 My monacle just fell out.
