Original Trilogy Reception 1977-1983
Time

Return of the Jedi's value, in my opinion, comes from the subtexts of the film and then the action content.

RotS tries to have a lot more going on on the surface.  But that all fails for me and there are no good action scenes.  They try hard, but they just don't work.  The opening scene could have been old school good... but it dissolved into "Oh no! Buzz droids!"

A better question would be Weta versus ILM.  My vote would go to Weta.

Read ALL THE WORDS in the thread title - "Who Makes Better USE of CGI?", not "Who Makes Better CGI?"

Hmm... I prefer to answer the other question:

Who has made the best CG?  You could use several different measuring sticks to judge this question, however I think I will go with Size and Viciousness.

Is the T-Rex or the Jurassic Park 3 dinosaur the largest/viciousnessest beast in Spielberg's arsenal?  If so, then I suggest it fights the giant sea monster from Phantom Menace.

CRUNCH!

Lucas wins.

What's the tally now, Frink?

2d movies. dvds.

Not gone yet but they will be in a few years.

You'll be able to watch 3D Blu Ray movies in 2D if you want.  It might be a small consolation, but it's something...

Come to think of it - MST3K.  I know there is now The Film crew, Riff Trax, and Cinema Titanic.  But still.

I liked MST3K okay.  Everybody but that git TV's Frank.

Lucas v. Spielberg, Round 3 - Who Makes Better Use Of CGI?
Time

I went to one of Lucas's websites and the Common Gateway Interface code (CGI hereafter) was very well implemented.  I was able to search and sort and never did the code residing in cgibin give me any trouble.

I have yet to come across a Spielberg website containing any code inside of a cgibin subdirectory.

RESULT: Lucas x 2. (with both hands)

Its just so much fun to speculate and discuss that I have to watch the episodes one at a time.  Watching the first season straight through was great, but I wouldn't give up these discussions for anything.

I used to watch it in clumps too.  We started watching after season 2, so we watched the first two on DVD.  After that, we'd let several buffer on the DVR and watch 2-3 episode marathons.  But then we started this group at work, and I have to agree with 005's assessment: discussing it is way more fun than watching it, so you're missing out on too much if you don't watch it in realtime.

Regarding the differences between the 815 flight in Lost2004 and Alt2004.  It would be my guess that the differences surrounding Locke's knives and Christian's casket etc are part of fate manipulating events to get them back to the island one way or another.

But the Island is underwater.  It throws a monkey wrench into all of my "we have to go back... again/for the first time!" theories.

True.  But the ocean is wet... we could dry up the wetness with a heating fan, but it would have to be larger than the ocean.  Hmmm, yess,  Imagine that!  A heating fan the size of Africa.  That. Would. Be. Something!

Star Wars Comics

Original post *snip*

Tales of the Jedi had a good overall storyline but the execution wasn't that good. Rogue Squadron is crap. Bland as hell. Legacy is good but not very Star Wars. Dark Times has some good and some bad. Knights of the Old Republic is good. I don't see what's so bad about any of its sidekick characters. Rebellion/Empire is kind of bland and can have a revisionist take on the OT period. There are various other Star Wars comics, but I can't list them all. Go to wookieepedia and look up "list of comics" if you want to find out what Star Wars comics there have been.

Anyway, Dark Horse Star Wars comics is just the come-lately stuff. The comics of the OT era, the true Star Wars eu, are the Marvel comics.

Lolz.  Isn't this the same response you gave me back in November?  Waaaaaay back in post #6.

Well, at least you are consistent.  :)
