Maybe it's all one island with a little water separating two parts of it?

So... did anyone get a little bit of a "Dogma" feeling from last night's episode?  The "If the MIB executes his loophole, we will all cease to exist (potentially due to proving God a liar and undoing all of His creation?" bit?

And, I guess, whether they like it or not, Ben and Widmore are now on the same side?  Or is Widmore still on his own side...?

And what do you make of Patchy getting shot in the eye?  Alternate universe parallel or actually the reason he's got the patch on in the regular-verse?

It was nice to see the Kwon's back together even if it was only in the alt-stuff.

And what's the point of Sun only being able to speak Korean?  Is it just a time waster, or is there going to be something significant here?

I know you've still got them!!!!
Time

I have lots of Kenner figures, vehicles and playsets.  Most of them I had as a kid, but I picked some up in the r.a.s.s.c. newsgroup back in the day.  It was ebay before ebay!  And I have an eye out at rummage sales and the lot.

I used to think I was saving them for my kids.  I have kids... they're not getting anywhere close to my toys!

It's mostly in boxes in my basement.  I have a few vintage Transformers, Mask, Voltron, toys down there as well... but it's mostly Star Wars.

Like my recommendation for Neal McDonough, I have to recommend Michael Biehn for: Anything.  He just wasn't in enough...  But if I were casting, I would put him in almost anything.

Don't know what specific role he'd play, but I think he's got that Star Wars look that he would fit in well enough.  Almost shares a ressemblance to Mark Hamill, so if you needed someone to play an elder member of the Skywalker clan...

If the prequels would have been made in 1986-1992, he would have made a great Anikan.

Probably.  I'll need to go watch the Abyss again, because I currently just have Hicks in my head.

How about Fey'lya?

Perhaps one Tim Curry?

@ Jaitea: I agree Lapti Nek isn't as bad as Jedi Rocks, but it's not that great either, IMO. Anyway the link you posted is quite good, it's no doubt better than the SE.

Anyway I think we should go away from the whole musical/Broadway like thing.
It's too old-fashioned and corny. We need to go back to something that sound ancient, out of time (if you take the nuance), after all, Star Wars is meant to have occurred a long time ago, right?

@Bingowings: that my friend is amazing, a good point to start from.
(Discarding what's at range of a fan edit)
I think taking Oola back to the center of the scene in an mysterious/Oriental/Spanish/sensual/lustful kind of dance would be a good idea.
Plus Oola is a beloved character among the fans (why do you think everybody like Aalya Secura ;), she's sexy, she could dance like the Salomé in your vid.
In fact the whole Sultan thing fits like a glove to Jabba, isn't it?

NO WAY.  More Fat Dancer, or get out!

If I recall, C3PX is in Central, and I'm in MDST.  We're all on Daylight Savings, or are you really on Standard time, 005?

Thanks to the glorious state of Indiana, I am on Daylight Saving, thank you.  Can never keep straight when its on or off.

I took a picture to remember:

My wife's dead body in the foreground, I think I'm dead on the other side of the map, my friend is getting shot in the back while a teammate runs forward to plant the flag at the literal last second.  I think the video is on my fileshare, if that's still around.

Nice!  Did you composite several photos together to get the panorama, or is there a way to take those superwide photos?

I took a series of photos and photo-merged them in Photoshop.  I tried to do something like this several times, this is the only one that worked.

Double-nice!  I'm always looking for HiRes double wide background images.  Maybe I'll go back through my fileshare and find some good moments to do the same.

I'll give it a shot with MS ImageCompositeEditorTM. http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ICE/

Does anyone here besides C3PX have/play Halo 3?  We should set up an OT.com night sometime and get a bunch of players.

Hmm, are you excluding me? I suppose I could take what you just said as, "Does anyone here besides C3PX, because he totally sucks and I don't want to play with him, have/play Halo 3?" ;)

Of course not!  I just think we should... see other people.

~or~

Of course not!  You would be a member of "the group" and I'm still up for playing Halo 3, Halo Wars, or L4D together, just you and I, as long as it doesn't feel like a man-date.

A New Hope - Trading on Promises ~or~ Trailer for the SW Universe
Time

Perhaps there's another term for this, but I know it as "Trading on Promises."  For example: a movie trailer itself is rarely "awesome", but it trades on the promise that the actual movie will be "awesome"- therefore the trailer is "awesome."  If that promise is "broken" by the actual movie (by being non-awesome) then the trailer also assumes a non-awesome state.

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is a trailer for the rest of the SW Universe.  That is, it trades on promises that aren't fullfilled by the movie itself, but rather are hinted at in an awesome way.  Those promises are either fulfilled by your imagination- or by the subsequent sequels.

Let me give some examples:

Luke is never a Jedi.  He holds a lit lightsabre in all of 2 scenes.  In the first one, he waves it around like a feather duster... in the second one he waves it around like a feather duster while a robotic-softball shoots mini-lasers at him.  Based on the footage in the movie, Kenner had no right selling toys of Luke holding a lightsabre.  Yet they did.  By the truckload.  And, arguably, it was one of the best toys for a young Star Wars fan to own- not so he/she could recreate the scenes in the movie, but so he/she could execute scenes from his/her imagination that fulfill the promises made in the movie.

That's really the best example, so I probably shouldn't have led in with it... but here are some more:

Obi-Wan's death & Father Skywalker's Death aren't avenged
Similarly: Vader isn't defeated
The Empire isn't overthrown
Leia doesn't choose between Luke/Han
Neo doesn't free the people/destroy the Matrix*

*Obviously, this is a reference to another movie, but you can't disagree that this does not happen in A New Hope.

The key, though, is that A New Hope feels over when it's over.  Not like (IMHO of course) Fellowship of the Ring which ran for 3 hours and then called a timeout while they finished making the rest of the movie(s).  So, the contract with the audience isn't broken... somehow we understand the promises WILL BE fulfilled, even if we don't get to see it.  OF COURSE Luke will go on to finish training to become a Jedi.  OF COURSE the Empire will eventually be overthrown.  OF COURSE Vader will get his comeupance.  Somehow we're okay with this not actually being in that first movie, and I think people would have been okay with it had those events never been realized on film, but simply remained as assumptions.  (Anchorhead, would love for you to chime in here.)

Speaking of the Matrix, when I saw that movie in 1999, I immediately went home and described the movie scene for scene for my younger brother.  When I got to: "He drops the phone and flys away from the city and then some screamo-rock song starts."  He was shocked!  How could they leave the story there WITHOUT LETTING NEO SAVE ALL OF THE PEOPLE???  What was the point of the movie, HAVE HIM SAVE MORPHEUS?  His shock shocked me.  I didn't have ANY of those thoughts after seeing the movie.  But the way I retold it, he expected that promise to be fulfilled in the movie itself... and not left to my assumptions or to future sequels.

Okay, that's all for now.

My wife will play xbox with me on occasion as long as the stakes are low and she can take some dramamine far enough ahead of time...  I really meant that if we ended up with 5 or 6 people from OT.com that wanted to play... I guess you can play with as many as 8... but having one guy play zombies while the other 4 play survivors might not be much fun.  What do you think?

What timezone are you playing in, 005?

You're familair with the groups I'm referencing?  The quick-fire, moderated discussion groups?

EXAMPLE:

GAFFER: Avatar has just shattered world box-office records, what do you make of this... 005???
FRINK: All your base are belong to us!
005:  Um...
XHONZI: Spitt is out, 005!  It's a rapid-fire moderated discussion group!
FRINK: You misspelled Spit.

Hmmm... maybe this isn't such a good idea.

Besides... we'd have to teleconference by hologram.  And mine's busted.  :(

The MacGaffer Group?

I've actually just talked myself into this, and I'd love to be involved.  Have they ever done a movie/pop culture review in the style of the Maclaughlin Group of the much parodied group on The Onion Video News Network?

I, personally, think that would be awesome.  Though I have been known to be wrong before.  From time to time.

WHY we like the things we like (and why we don't that which we don't)
Time

Yeah, I think this is the problem.

When you go against the common grain, you are expected to be able to explain yourself.  And if you can't, then you are actually a bigger idiot than before.

I think we also talk ourselves into things.  Someone asks why you like Phantom Menace... you settle on "the hair" which makes you sound like a fruit.  Someone comes right out (theoretically) and calls you a fruit.  But for the rest of your life you will believe you like Phantom Menace (which was crap (except for Ewan McDonald (who was excellent (he truly was!)))) because of the hair... but it's not true.  You know it doesn't taste like apples, but you JUST LIKE IT anyways.

But the best part is when you crystalize your feelings into rational thought... and then you have other feelings that you crystalize into rational thought... but rational thoughts "A" don't mesh well with rational thoughts "B" and then your wife (hypothetically speaking) calls you out on it and calls you a hypocrite!  Yeah... that is the best part.

Ric (or '85' as you are sometimes known),

I just saw your tour-de-the-force performance in Alien3.  Just once question: Does Alien3 take place before or after Phantom Menace?  Why did you use an alias in Alien3 and why were you demoted to 1st place lackey in Space Jail?

(Tour-de-the-force: And if you look your left, you can see Emperor Palpatine waiting for us.  He is an evil-force-person.)
