Need Advice: Internet Service
Time

I had a friend who was having a devil of a time with his Qwest DSL and his Linksys router.  He did a lot of research and found that only certain models of routers work.  I'm something of a whiz at those things (name that movie quote!) so I went over to help him.  It was like pulling teeth, and a lot of blind networking...  but we finally got it to work.  And, if I recall, this was on one of the "supported" routers.

I guess Qwest really wants you to rent/buy/lease/whathaveyou their modem-router.

GoldenEye 007 Wii-make (NOW "RELOADED" for 360 and PS3)
Time

I like Craig as the new Bond... but comeon'  GoldenEye is still my favourite Bond movie and Brosnan gets a lot of credit for that.  The tone of the movie/game doesn't really suit Craig's Bond either.

At any rate, I was never a big fan of the N64 GoldenEye because I never played it.  I was into PC shooters at the time and I didn't have an N64 and GoldenEye looked inferior to what I was playing on the PC.  I feel now that I really missed out, so I might want to give it a shot... but I really wish this were coming to XBLA instead.

Also, Princess Bride.  We were trying to think of movies we had that the kids would want to watch.  My oldest is 7 and he has two younger sisters (5 and 3) and we thought it might be a good movie for the crew.  (Rushmore (1) doesn't really get factored into these things).

My kids' major problem is attention span.  I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not, but they have a hard time sitting still for 1.5 - 2 hours and just watching a movie.  Normally they watch things upstairs on a smallish TV and they play with their toys (and fight!) while something they've seen 100 times rolls on in the background.  But if it's a movie they've never seen before, they get to watch it in the basement on the 128"ish projection screen in total darkness.  They really like that for the first 45 minutes or so, but then they want to get down on the floor and roll around and play.  And switch seats every 2 minutes.  Either they're too creative to sit still for that long... (that's good!) or they're too impatient (that's bad!) or they contain potassium sorbate. (.... That's bad.)  Can I go now?

Back to the Princess Bride.  I think it was still a little too far over their heads, but they seemed to like it anyways.  I liked watching it on the bigscreen because I could pick out all of the 80s toys in Kevin (or whatever his name is in this movie)'s room.  Lots of He-Man, some She-Ra (I would make fun of a boy having She-Ra toys, but I know them because I had all of the same ones (they were just extra villains for He-Man to fight, so STEP OFF!)))))  And Captain America and others I've already forgotten.  Oh yeah, a Burger Kind Empire Strikes Back Glass too.

A good time was had by all.

Love Prestige.  Love Sunshine.  Love Clue.  Haven't watched Dances With Wolves for a decade or so... but I do have the extended version on DVD.  I guess I'll have to plan to revisit that one.  It's been a while since I've seen Tombstone too, so I'll have to make a date with the wife.

We didn't see the Illusionist for a couple of years after the Prestige... just couldn't imagine how it could compare.  They are actually quite different.  Different enough that both can coexist.  We liked it, and I'm generally a fan of Norton and Giamatti... but it is rather forgettable.  I insist everyone sees Prestige that hasn't.  I tend to forget Illusionist exists.

I love Dark City, so I looked into Proyas's other work...  I had never seen the Crow and I'd heard so much good about it, I picked it up.  I guess I just didn't get it.  It bored me and didn't appeal to me at all.  I Robot does seem to be more formulaic... but at least I enjoyed it.

Willow is really good. The last time I watched it, I had sort of forgotten that Kilmer was even in it.  I'm not sure how that happened since he is by far the best part of that movie.  I think I'll have to show that one to my kids soon.

Okay, now on to my movies.  I saw Moon... and I was extremely underwhelmed.  I thought that if this was an episode of the Twilight Zone, that it would have been "average".  Can someone explain to me what I missed?

BioShock!!! (1, 2 and Infinite and SPOILERS)
Time

Reappropriated thread:

A place for C3PX and me (and anyone else (probably pictures of ice cream from Frink)) to discuss BioShock.  Plenty of SPOILERS to abound.

Old thread:

This is an idea I am excited about and I don't know whom else to tell about it, so it's going here.  This will really only be of interest to fans of BioShock (and even then it might not be that interesting) and it only contains mild spoilers for BS1.

I've heard that they wanted 5 or 6 sequels to BioShock.  I loved BS1, and I also loved BS2 (that's for another post!) but I have a hard time thinking it all won't be played out before BS3 is done.  I had that same worry going into BS2, but I actually really liked it, so maybe my scepticism isn't paying off.

I love the world of Rapture and I thought one of the only ways I'd be really interested in returning there a third time is if it's Rapture BTF (before the fall).  This is what BS2 Multiplayer is supposed to be, but it's also very light in the story department.  No, I want to see Rapture before the fall, and not after and not during.  But that might not make a very good action game.  :(  So, I started thinking that maybe it didn't have to be an action game!  Sure, it could have action in it... just like BS1/2 have other things besides just action...  But that the story or the mystery would be centre place, and the action would be far behind.  So, what kind of game is that?  An Adventure game!  Better yet, A First Persion Private Investigator - Solve the Mystery Adventure Game.

Or an "FPPIStMAG".  Probably the first of its kind!

Well, it's not when I thought more about it, I realized that it would actually be like a modernized Tex Murphy sequel.

What do you think about that?

I really like the Shadow of the Empire ST.

Not sure if this counts, but the Rushmore ST is pretty awesome.  I think I named my youngest son (Rushmore) after it.

Russia House, Man from Snowy River, Blade Runner, Transformers 1986... these are all of the first ones that come to mind.

I'll have to check out Krull.  But I do love GoldenEye (at least, the music in the movie... not sure I've heard a CD) and Fifth Element is also awesome.

Well, I guess Star Wars doesn't. Being as we have droids used for war in the PT and for assassinations in the OT.

I can think of many other works that have droids killing people as well. So yeah, I guess there are plenty that don't use the three laws.

Was there ever an indication Lucas actually borrowed these laws? We know it is against Threepio's programing to hurt people, but that seems like just a natural safety feature a responsible manufacturer would put on a droid intended for household use. I personally wouldn't consider adhering to the three laws.

Terminator seems like a good example here too.  And Battlestar Galactica.  And the Matrix.  Blade Runner.  Cyborg 4: The Reckoning.  Soldier.  Austin Powers.

Westworld, Transformers, Alien (Ash was a G** D*** Robot, if I recall) <spoilers!>

Darth Bane Novel: A Great Exploration of the Dark Side
Time

I read the first book and quite liked it.  It wasn't the best, but it seemed to be good enough.  I started reading the 2nd, and so far I'm just not into it.  Then I made the mistake of reading Jedi vs Sith and finding them to tell the same story?  What happened there?

Should I push through the rest of two and get into three?  Or should I just quit while I'm ahead?
