So... anyways.

Did anyone want to respond to my questions here?

exactly.  this is why none of it should be allowed.   The acceptability of spankings by society has led to child abuse.    Parents start out with just spanking the child,  then it gets worse and worse and and the kid ends up looking like a punching bag.

Allow me to crib from TheBoost:

Are we actually talking about anything? What laws abuse do you mean? What cases are you citing? Or is it just a general "kids today... spanking leads to abuse.... grumble grumble"?

I don't know of any abuse that started out as spanking.  There's a clear, thick line (maybe 8pts) between abuse and spanking from where I can see it.  I don't personally know of any kids (or wives, for that matter) that look like punching bags...  And I think most of the parents I know (maybe 80%?) spank.

But then again... I don't have a temper/violence problem.  So maybe that makes a difference.

Seriously.  Are there lots of "carried away" parents that start spanking their kids and end up beating them?  Do you mean that after a couple swats to the bottom, it progresses to a point of real violence within seconds?  Or more that, overtime, gentle paddles on the rear-end lead to more violent forms of abuse as they get older?  I know of no actual real world occurances of either, but maybe I'm just blissfully ignorant to it.  Or maybe it's just rampant speculation.

When I was first married, I ended up playing a lot of Duck, Duck, Goose with my new 4 and 6 year old nieces.  The four year old didn't understand the rules very well, apparently, because she would crown one person a duck, another person a duck, a third person a duck, and then a fourth person 'spaghetti', then back to many more ducks before finally getting around to goose.

There are other adults I trust with my kids enough to let them spank them.  It's a pretty short list.  I wouldn't condone teachers spanking my kids, but I don't have much of an opinion on them spanking other kids, as long as they had the parents' consent.

Star Wars movie elimination game!
Time

You realize that you'll never get 100 individual voters to vote off TPM or AOTC, right?  You need to either let people vote more than once (once a day, once a week) or change the point structure.

I'd guess as many as 30 or 40 individual voters show up to this thread.

Anyways:

OT:

Star Wars:101 points + 1 (Puggo)

The Empire Strikes Back:105 points +1 +2 (summing other peoples votes)

Return of the Jedi:99 points

PT:

The Phantom Menace:99.665 points -.334

Attack of the Clones:95.666 points -.333 -2 (other people)

Revenge of the Sith:98.666 points -.333 -1 (other people)

ELIMINATED:

none  (sorry none, not my call)
ghostkeet

Sorry, I couldn't choose a least favourite PT.

Episode I: The Ridiculous Menace (FULL MOVIE IS AVAILABLE TO STREAM, SEE FIRST POST)
Time

One little comment:

I enjoy the ridiculous moments much more than the "normal" ones.  Take the "Are you a- person?/I can fix anything- Oops!" scene.  I laugh everytime and it seems to be quite enjoyable to anyone I've shown... until he starts talking about angels.  I'm watching this because it's funny and ridiculous... not to see the actual movie.

As a 6th grade teacher, I can honestly say I wish corporal punishment was still allowed.

I'm sorry, but it sickens to read that someone thinks it ought be acceptable to hit children.

fixed, and you're right.

I consider those that hit kids to be bullies.

Oh, c'mon, Warb.  Now, you're just putting typos in my posts to make it look like I'm as illiterate as you.

(looks like someone needed to be spanked more as a kid)

xhonzi?  You are ADM?  Did you just forget your log in and make a sock.   I gotta say, ADM, it's not a very good one.  And why did you stop making fan edits?  And your wit isn't as sharp lately.  I hope you hadn't been konked on the head with a rolling pin sometime back.

Warbler:

xhonzi is not ADM.  ADM was a liberal, xhonzi isn't.

Wow.  Massive joke fail.

It's a toughie.  There are a lot of bad parents out there, so laws that prevent kids from actual mistreatment are pretty necessary.  I think we used to trust parents not to murder their own kids in the swimming pool, or sexually assault them.  For some reason, parents as a group have lost this trust and now every little thing parents do is up for scrutiny.

I spank my kids when they deserve it.  Let me rephrase that- I spank my kids when it's for their good and not when it's just for my own.  At least, that's my intention.  I'm sure many of you wouldn't condone this.

I think my kids are pretty good.  By that I mean they are (mostly) well behaved and are concerned for the wellfare of others.  They are kids, so they act up from time to time.  But they know what my wife's and my expectations of them are- what the rules of the house are- and what the consequences are.  Seems to be working pretty well.

(For referrence, my kids are B8, G6, G4, B2)

star wars Bantam Books VS Random House Spoilers
Time

I think I told this story in another thread here, but after I gave up on Star Wars books mid 90s, I went to go work at Barnes and Noble where the entire staff, minus myself, were into "The Wheel of Time" series.  Peer pressure being what it is, I started reading them too.  I really enjoyed the series, but it was still being written (still is!) and so I never finished it.  Each book is about 800 pages in hardcover, and approaching or over 1000 in paperback.

5 years later my wife and I are about to go a 16 hour round trip road trip and we go to the library to see if there are any good audio books to take with us.  I see "The Eye of the World" which is the first book in the series and so we grab it.  It's abridged to 2 90 minute tapes- so 3 hours.  It's a long book, but I don't have a sense of how abridged this will be.  Most of my other experience with audiobook abridgements are from the 2 tape versions of the Star Wars bantam books I read in the mid 90s and then listened to later.  (It's amazing when you listen to an abridgement just how much they are able to shorten it without noticably losing whole scenes or chapters).

To make a long story short (too late!), the 2 hour tape version was terrible and I found myself apologizing to my wife for having so strongly recommended it.  It made me think, "have my tastes changed so much in the past few years?"  Upon returning it to the library, I saw that they had a 27 disc, 30+ hour version of it on CD.  I started to listen to it on my commute to work and found everything I had ever loved to still be in the book, albeit only in the unabridged version.  3 hours from 30+, meaning the 2 tape version was a mere 10% of the length of the full version.

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!
Time

This is probably the place Neptune came from:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-3D-Conversion/topic/12312/

The 2d-3d conversions sorta work.  But are not a good representation of the technology, according to the members there.

Gah, how did I miss that the first time around?  That's what I get for not hanging around enough of the other forums, I guess.

Well, so I'm late to the news desk.  I'm planning a Fall 2011 3D upgrade to my home theatre so I won't be able to enjoy them in full quality until then (if things go according to plan).  I'm 90% sure you can download them now (as I am doing) and use stereoscopic player to convert them in real time to red/blue anaglyph.

I think there's at least 4 bands in the qualityscale for 3D:

  1. On the fly converted by your tv
  2. Converted by an amateur at home with better quality than "on the fly"
  3. Converted by a professional studio
  4. Shot in 3D (4reelz)

So,  I'm not assuming these will be a 3 or a 4 on that scale.  But I'm guessing it's better than a 1, and given that the "real" #3 will be done by Lucasfilm in 2015, I'm not sure that these still won't be better.

Now just to convince Neptune to do it all over again for SW:Revisited and Adywan's pending SW Theatrical reconstruction.
