Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions
Time

Side thought...I was just going through the "Sounds of Star Wars" book released last year.  Sure enough, the sound of the Krayt dragon call was indeed the blue-ray version.  Must not have listened to that particular sound back then. The book states that GL wanted to change it because originally it sounded too much like a Raider, but also because it was an off the shelf sound effect from an existing sound library.  I actually think the new effect is better...not that it excuses LF for not fixing the millions of other issues.

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

Nice job Dark!  I mean that's putting it mildly.  I wanted to break them out first night, but our baby came a bit early, lol.  Long story short, we were in the hopspital several weeks, but all is well now.  Anyhow I got a chance to look at all 3, and watch most of STAR WARS (yes, I still refer to Episode lV as just STAR WARS).  I don't have much new to add to the "reviews", but only to echo everyone's accolades.  Just a phenomenal job.  I dropped in the GOUT for a comparison and it's not even close.  Those discs are coasters now.  Plus it's so awesome to have the many sound mixes at the flick of a button where before we would have to actually switch discs (!).  Gotta love technology. Menus are fantastic as well...great job by not going with "obvious" music for the menus.  It's easy to see the hours of work in these discs.  As stated, there's only so far you can go with the source material, but even with that in mind, the picture stands up well on a 42 display...i will soon try it on my 106" projector:)  They are hands down, the definitive version of the original unaltered trilogy to this point.  You have my appreciation!

HBO Star Wars preservations (a Work In Progress)
Time

I remember watching Star Wars on PRISM, a defunct pay service back in the day.  My grandmother had HBO.  Neither channel showed the same transfer as the FOX video version...which was definitely the version shown on CBS. I can't confirm if it was a 16mm transfer, but I watched my VHS transfer a hundred times as a kid and it was definitely not the home video version.

RETURN OF THE JEDI story LP (Released)
Time

I certainly applaud your effort.  It must have been nearly impossible.  While the STAR WARS and EMPIRE "story of" lps were based on the finished mono soundtracks of each film, the JEDI lp only used the actors audio.  Other than that the soundtrack was vastly incomplete.  Stock Ben Burtt effects were dropped in that (usually) beared little resemblance to the final JEDI soundtrack.  The pacing was way off because they didn't even have a final film to work with, and much of the music was different.

Hats off!

The Phantom Menace - general discussion thread
Time

My biggest problem with TPM (besides the obvious objections mentioned above), is that the characters were impossible to relate to.  "Star Wars" gave us dialogue by Luke and Han in a way that we would say..if not the exact words. CONTRACTIONS! People on Earth use them constantly.

If SNL or The Simpsons made a parody in 1998 about the most commercial, watered down, kid friendly character to eventually curse the Star Wars universe...I'm pretty sure it still wouldn't come close to Jar Jar.  My hatred for him is still as alive as it was ten plus years ago.  Can you imagine if his "character" was say..a renegade wookie...or any other species.  Or simpley the way he looked now, but acted differently...and didn't have a voice like the SHMOO from NBC Saturday morning cartoons of the early 80s?  Terrible.

Discussion: What am I up against trying to find a first edition Star Wars paperback?
Time

The hard cover above is indeed the book club edition.  Anchor, I found a copy of that paperbook on ebay and paid less than $20 for it.  It's in decent condition considering the age.  If you keep your eye out and save an ebay search, you may find another copy before long.  I recommend searching STAR WARS PAPERBACK 1976.  Good luck!

STAR WARS RECREATED TV SPOTS (Released)
Time

Hey there.  Thanks so much for the insight, as well as posting the audio in the first place.  i'm guess you had a pretty decent stereo setup in the late 70s because the quality of these are excellent considering that was over 30 years ago:)  It's amazing how we can remember actual takes from spots we saw once or twice on tv decades ago.

Do you think the title was from spot #1 was the actual STAR WARS logo receding, taken directly from the film...with a PG slate on the bottom?

I believe the "terminate her immediately" was form a spot included in the 2004 dvds. Lots of he sound was not from the movie, which makes "guessing" very difficult.  Thanks again for your help, and if you uncover any other lost gems, I'd love to check them out.

Max_Rebo's '97 SE superset' preservation (* unfinished project *)
Time

Hey guys.  I'm about to post an auction on Ebay.  One for the SPECIAL EDITION LASERDISC BOX SET paired with the original DEFINITIVE COLLECTION LASERDISC BOX SET.  I'm also putting up a laserdisc player in a separate auction.  I don't want to sound like I'm looking for free press, so I'm not going to post a link or anything.  If you might be interested, IM me and I will send the link.   The box set does have digital sound...the laserdisc player does have an optical audio out.

STAR WARS RECREATED TV SPOTS (Released)
Time

Hey guys.  Thought you might be interested in this project I just finished.  Recreations of classic Star Wars tv trailers.  I just finished matching 30 year old audio I recorded when I was a kid (plus some excellent sounding stuff I found in this forum), with video from a pan and scan ld I transferred.  I wasn’t looking for prestine dvd quality, but something closer to what would have been recorded from an over the air broadcast…the LD fit the bill.  Some are in the same style as those included on the 2004 dvd set.  Buy then there are a set that aired on Saturday mornings…each spot profiles a character (Luke, Ben, Leia).  Very cool stuff.  Obviously most of the audio is crap, because that’s what you got when you hold a cassette recorder in front of a tv speaker…but still a miracle the audio survived this long.

Check’em out and I hope you enjoy them!

Star Wars: The Trilogy **PROJECT STALLED DUE TO HARD DRIVE FAILURE**
Time

Hmmmm.  If you cut from "Give yourself to the dark side"...to "Never!!"....you're really missing a HUGE moment in the entire Star Wars saga.  There would be no spark to set off Luke to "use his anger' and really dance the line of turning to the dark side.  I applaud your creativity, but I can't agree with robbing Jedi of arguably it's most powerful moment.
