Editing movies ruled illegal

Actually, I'm pretty sure a lot of the censored TV shows and movies shown in Malaysia are censored not by the studios that produced the titles, but rather the censorship board or some other local entity. It's just too badly done and really detracts from the viewing experience.

It's interesting that, in countries with insane censorship laws (like Malaysia, where I grew up), editing movies and TV shows for "inappropriate" content (often with REALLY bad editing that sticks out worse than any graphic scene could), is a really common practice for TV stations and movie theaters. For example, when "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" was aired in Malaysia, every occurance of the word "morphin' " was cut out, even in the theme song (and the corresponding words in the title were blanked out), for fear that innocent kids would mistake it for the drug "morphine" (!!!). When I saw "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" in a Malaysian theater, there were very obvious (and very distracting) cuts all over the place. (The movie was so bad anyway that I never bothered to find out what I missed.) In Singapore, particularly graphic movies are often released twice in theaters -- a sanitized version first, followed by the uncut version rated R-21 (21 and above).

I wonder what movie producers would say about that.

I just read this on http://www.hackingnetflix.com/2006/07/editing_movies_.html:

Associated Press: Court Rules against Sanitizing Films. Companies like CleanFlicks, Play It Clean Video, and CleanFilms.com have been editing purchased copies of movies and renting them to customers, but a U.S. district court ruled that this practice violated copyright laws.

Editing movies to delete objectionable language, sex and violence is an "illegitimate business" that hurts Hollywood studios and directors who own the movie rights, said U.S. District Judge Richard P. Matsch in a decision released Thursday in Denver.

"Their (studios and directors) objective ... is to stop the infringement because of its irreparable injury to the creative artistic expression in the copyrighted movies," the judge wrote. "There is a public interest in providing such protection."

Hmmm . . . any guesses on what the verdict would be on fan edits? =(

Actually, it's on the back. =)

Just my two cents about the new ROTJ ending -- personally I don't think the "montage" sequence fits in quite so well at the end of the sexlogy (?), but taken on its own it's quite a masterpiece. Seeing Anakin's transformation from innocent kid to Jedi to Sith Lord to sacrificial father, summed up concisely with such masterful editing to such rousing music, is just overwhelming.

I don't know if there are other covers for this set, but I found the lovely ones by Boba Feta at http://bobafeta.kol.co.nz/ .

My only gripe with them is they're not clearly labelled "ADM Special Edition" or something to that effect on either the front or spine -- you wouldn't know that they were fan edits until you flip them to the back.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM

Well, I wasn't trying to start a discussion about LD per se, I was just going to bring up the fact that, if LD video is analog, then an anamorphic transfer of LD video to DVD would look better than converting letterboxed digital video into anamorphic digital video, right? I may be completely off the mark here, but I'm thinking that resizing analog video would not introduce ugly artefacts like resizing digital video would, since the resolution of analog video should be practically infinite (I'm thinking of a photograph taken with an analog camera, which can be blown up to any dimensions without artefacting -- versus a picture taken with a digital camera, which has a fixed resolution).

Sure, you could make a "fanamorphic" (hah, I love that word!) version of the letterboxed video simply by cropping and resizing it in AviSynth, but that's exactly what it's going to look like -- a cropped and resized version of the letterboxed video. I'm guessing that using AviSynth's Lanczos4 filter to resize the video will yield better quality than using the "Zoom" function of a DVD player on a widescreen TV, though.

I must admit I know nothing about laser discs. Is it a digital format?

Patience is a virtue, vbangle.

I've been burning the discs for the people who only requested one or two discs (I'm still waiting for some addresses -- you know who you are -- please PM me your address if you want the discs!).

The 25-message limit makes replying to PMs really difficult, because I constantly have to decide which messages to delete before I'm able to send new ones. If you want to get in touch with me in a hurry, e-mail me at ganwuiming@gmail.com (I won't guarantee instant replies, but at least it makes replying much easier).

I changed my mind about asking for payment. I know DL discs are really expensive, but it just feels really dishonest to charge for someone else's hard work, especially on something none of us even owns the copyright for. So - I'm not going to ASK for anything in return. If, out of the goodness of your heart, you'd like to offer me some reimbursement anyway, I'll accept it with gratitude. Better still, if you have any fan edits/OT preservations you'd like to offer me in return, PM (or preferably e-mail) me a list. Or if in the future you make or obtain anything you'd like to share with me, do drop me a note. And share whatever you receive with others. This community is all about sharing, anyway.

Hey vbangle, I'm okay, LOL . . . didn't mean to go "poof" . . . just been busy, that's all . . . I was going to reply each PM individually (and wow, what an overwhelming response!) when I had more time. I didn't think there was a hurry to get them . . .

But since you asked, I'll just post a general reply here for the time being.

As a rule, I don't charge for my own edits, much less anyone else's edits, but I can't afford to send out so many DL discs to so many people at my own expense, so I hope you all won't mind reimbursing me for the cost of the discs after I've sent them out. (Unless you prefer to send me blanks, but that would just be a needless waste of postage.)

I'm also going to have to get new blanks, and then burn them, all of which will take time, so please be patient.

I'm currently using Fujifilm DVD+R DL discs (I've got about 20 more of them), and a spindle of 25 Matrix DVD+R DL discs are on the way. I'll test the Matrix discs and if they work fine I'll get more. Let me know if you have any problem with those brands.

When I saw the movie, I went into it thinking of what the filmmakers were going for, which I think was to show a possible backstory to the myth that would've later become the Illiad. In many ways, it demystifies the legend and brings it down to a more human level, and at the same time the filmmakers were making a throwback to the classic sword and sandal epics.

I quite agree. It's a tale that could ostensibly be presented as history. Still, a fan edit that includes the god's interventions would be an awesome alternative.
