Taxi Driver.............Seeing all these ordinary people who obviously weren't extras walking down the street wearing these old clothes really give the film a really retro feel, and upon the first few minutes of initial viewing, you can tell what decade this was filmed in.

I don't nit-pick you guys too often, but if I may;  Taxi Driver was filmed in 1975, released in 1976.  It's not retro - it's original.  The Indiana Jones films, Super 8, Catch Me If You Can, Apollo 13, etc - those have a retro feel.

Well said.

The thread where we make enemies out of friends, aka the abortion debate thread
Time

Certainly with most things (not just abortion) people have opinions/beliefs on the matter based solely on what they were taught, how they were raised, etc. It makes sense since if they have never been through the specific life experience and so they have to base their opinion on moral upbringing. However it does make them extremely naive.

Santorum's opinion on whether abortion should be allowed when the mother's health is on the line changed after his wife's health was on the line. Yes it's flip flopping, yes he's a hypocrit, and he was an ignorant fool. But what I want to know is has his opinion on the matter changed? Is he now open to the idea of abortion when the mother's health is in danger or was his wife's pregnancy just a "special circumstance"? Because if he has changed and he's at least willing see thing's differently, then I can sort of respect that (sort of). But if his mind hasn't changed and his political stance  is the same then fuck that guy.

Dick Cheney is another example. The super Neo-Con's daughter comes out of the closet and now he's for gay rights. The irony is huge, and I had to laugh when I heard it, but part of me has to give him props for changing his mind on the issue.

Edit: Although the hypocritical bullshit could be avoided if they weren't all narrow-minded twats to begin with.

However, when I see politicians preaching against gays and lesbians and then sneaking off to get plowed in the ass by a stranger, that's not the same thing. Those guys are assholes and hate mongers. If there is a hell (and there isn't) I hope they burn in it.

Did you know that Armageddon got a Criterion release? I have no idea why, personally, I would take every copy and blow it up in space. (see what I did there #2)

I've still never seen that movie.

You didn't miss anything. There is absolutely no reason for that movie to get a Criterion release. Lame.

I'm with you, CP3S, I would not say that Abrams is a good director although I really enjoyed Super 8 at the theater with my niece and nephew.

I, like Darth_Ender, decided not to see MI:3 after seeing the second one. I'll definitely give it try,

if you so.

Yep, I so. ;)

Atheist don't rip on Christianity and then think that Islamic and Jewish beliefs are real.

never said they did.   My point is that they respect the Islamic and the Jewish faith more than they do the Christian faith.   I hardly ever hear comedians make fun of Jews or Muslims, but I hear them make jokes about Christianity all the time.

Comedians make jokes about things they know about and things that people can relate to. Comedian's who make fun of Christianity were usually raised as Christians. There are tons of Jewish comedians that make fun of Jews.

There are also plenty of comedians that make fun of other religions. Even this jackass who I don't dislike because he has a stereotypical terrorist puppet, I just dislike him because he's not funny.

walkingdork said:

The point you are trying to make (I believe) is that only Christians get ripped on.

no, my point is that is more acceptable to rip Christians than it is Jews or Muslims.

walkingdork said:

The US is a mostly Christian country AND NOT the persecuted minority you and others would like to believe you are.

I never said Christianity was a persecuted minority.

No but it seems to be the mindset of so many people in this country. That somehow everyone is picking on poor Christians while Muslims and Jews get off easy. Everyone is against Christianity and it's a tough world out there for people worshiping Jesus.

walkingdork said:

I don't have Muslims or Jews knocking on my door and trying to convert me.

I don't do that myself and neither is my church into that.  Normally it is easy to get them to go away.   I've had people knock on my door have easily gotten them to go away.

It's more a Mormon issue around here.

walkingdork said:

There aren't pushy Muslims or Jews standing in front of the local college and all but forcing students to take a tiny copy of the Bible.

again not something I  or my church do.   I don't believe they really force you to take it.

Some of them are very pushing. I've been in a situation where I just took so they would leave me alone (and then I immediately dropped it on the floor).

walkingdork said:

I don't have Muslim or Jewish friends telling me I live in sin and trying to talk me into going church every Sunday (and it should be noted that I do have Muslim and Jewish friends.

I don't talk that way to non believers either.  But if you did ask your Muslim and Jewish friends straight out, they would agree that you are living in sin and should attend services at synagogue/mosque.

Probably. Evangelical Christians might be the pushiest people ever.

walkingdork said:

Let's stop pretending that Christians have it worst in this country because that is absolutely ridiculous.

But still, there is a double standard.

There are two different standards because they are two different situations. Christians are largest group in this country and they are widely accepted. Most of my complaints about Christians are superficial. I don't hate Christians (as I've mentioned I have many Christian friends) but many Christians are annoying and others are downright ridiculous. Most rip on Christians is more or less on religion in general.

However Muslims are not widely accepted in this country. There is a lot of fear mongering and hate towards Muslims in this country.

So yes, when people complain about Christians it's usually based on personal experience and I tend to agree but when people shit on Muslims it's more likely to be based on ignorance (even though I would agree their religion is just as silly as the next).

walkingdork said:

Most atheists/agnostics in this country are either raised in a Christian home or at least have Christianity thrown in their face most of their lives.

and you don't think that could make some atheists prejudice/bigoted against Christianity?  I think it could and has.

btw, just because I consider myself a Christian, does not mean that I am like Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson.  Their brand of Christianity is not my brand.

Yeah, I realize that you are not the obnoxious style of Christian. I'm sure there are bigots, but I feel like there is more bigotry between religions than there is with atheist towards religion. I think most atheists don't care about religion and at worst just find religious folks to be silly or annoying. It's hard to hate religious people, it's easier to laugh.

I don't understand, you say your family adheres to True Christianity, yet they won't celebrate the birth of Christ?

DuracellEnergizer said: cultic lies

*sigh*  now, if I had said this in reference to the Islam or Jewish religion, what would the reaction have been?  Lets say a celebrity said this about Islam or the Jewish religion, what would the reaction have been?  I'm going to bet that he'd/she'd be labeled a bigot.   Why is it ok to insult my religion, when it isn't to do the same to the others?  DuracellEnergizer, was it really necessary to use those words?

I have no problem with someone who doesn't believe in Christ, but I do have a problem with people insulting my religion.

I'm sure he thinks that Judaism and Islam are also a bunch of phoney baloney (as do I). This is such a typical Christian reaction to any and all criticism. Atheist don't rip on Christianity and then think that Islamic and Jewish beliefs are real. All three groups believe in the first 5 books of the Old Testament and atheists therefore think that all three groups are ignoring logic and believing in some stories that are obviously untrue.

The point you are trying to make (I believe) is that only Christians get ripped on. Most atheists/agnostics in this country are either raised in a Christian home or at least have Christianity thrown in their face most of their lives. The US is a mostly Christian country AND NOT the persecuted minority you and others would like to believe you are. I don't have Muslims or Jews knocking on my door and trying to convert me. We stick up for Muslims because in this country they are the minority and there are "bigots"who hate Muslims and try to stifle Muslim culture and growth in this country (just watch Fox News). Nobody would lose there mind if Christians tried to build a church near the WTC. In fact there is a huge cross where the WTC used to be. But Muslims want to take over an old Men's Warehouse (or was it a Burlington Coat Factory?) and oh no! the boogeyman is taking over and insulting 9/11 victims.

Let's stop pretending that Christians have it worst in this country because that is absolutely ridiculous.

Ah the 8th season of The Simpsons. Good year. The Scorpio episode in the beginning of the season is one of my favorites.

Although I pretty much an atheist the rest of my family is Christian including my ex-wife in her family. So my kids and I celebrated a traditional Christmas with a tree and Bing Crosby music. I don't believe in it, but I'm not going to rain on the parade of little kids (3 and 5).

At this point I think I will never intervene on what my daughters believe. I'm sure growing up they'll notice that I'm not a Christian (my 5 year old knows I don't pray and asks questions) and when they are older they'll probably have their own doubts. I'll never try to convince them of anything, but as teenagers/adults if they ask why I don't believe I will tell them. Otherwise I'm no better than a religious man trying to manipulate people into believing what I believe.

Dark Knight Rises - Now that we know the cast
Time

I will say that I am not excited about Anne Hathaway being in this film. Sure I'd throw it in her, but I'm not impressed with her acting OR her choice in movies to perform in (stay away from Jake Gyllenhaal, he is acting kryptonite).

I really shouldn't question Nolan's decisions though. Once upon a time, I thought Heath Ledger playing the Joker was the worst idea ever. :)

Nolan is one of the next generation of directors that I actually like. When I see his films come out, I try to avoid all trailers, posters, etc because I don't need to be convinced and I want to walk into the film with no idea of the plot twists that are so often given away in trailers (why they do this is beyond me). I do a similar thing with Darren Aronofsky.

It makes me excited that we are seeing the rise of these directorys (yes I realize that neither of the above directors are that new) because for a long time I thought, "man, when Martin Scorsese dies we are fucked!"

and if he is referring to that, I find it rather offensive.

If you can't give a guy a little shit on his birthday, when can you? I'm just having a little fun, no need to get upset.

this aint no normal guy.   But yes, you can give him a little "shit". But there are some subjects that you shouldn't make jokes about.   Christ's crucifixion is one of them.    To be clear the first amendment protects your right to make light of the crucifixion of Christ.  But I just think it isn't the right thing to do.

Probably not. Sorry to offend.

If you live close to one of these, you should be close to some. A friend of mine was eating Jaffa cakes the other day and says you can get them at Aldi!

I live like 5 minutes away from one of those. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

When I lived in Detroit the local grocery stores all stocked this Turkish Jaffe Cake knockoff in the "ethnic foods" section. Where I am now I haven't managed to find anything like them.

BEAUTIFUL WOMEN NEW RULES IN FIRST POST (NSFW) UPDATED RULES

Ever squeeze a fake boob? It's strangely disappointing. I'm not shallow enough to say I would never date a chick with fake breasts, but it's certainly not a turn on. It's so unnecessary in my opinion.

I'm an ass guy anyways. I'll take the Nicole Kidman type: great ass, boobs optional. I just need a handful. :)

Getting old sucks. No one is buying me a guitar or skyward sword (although I did "acquire" it off the internet). I haven't had a chance to play it yet as I have kids and that means I get to play video games...well...not often.

I think my folks are buying me two chairs for my kitchen table since when the (ex)lady friend left she took her two chairs with her. Damn practical gifts, but I guess it'll beat wheeling my office chair over for dinner. I feel like I am a little old for my parents to be buying me furniture but I'm young enough (29) to not try and talk them out of it. :)
