Having watched the teaser a few more times, I'm going to say that my initial disappointment has softened somewhat; even the soccer droid looks okay (but only okay) to me at the moment.

I still hate that godforsaken lightsaber to the deepest inner core of my soul, though.

I've come to really enjoy the teaser, except I'm still a little concerned about the cloaked figure and light saber.  It still comes across as cliche to me.  What I didn't like at first was how grim the teaser was.  The characters were all in distress (including the droid) and the music was suspenseful indicating the film takes place in not so good times.  Even when the Falcon shows up, it's being attacked.  Hearing the main title so suddenly was jarring to me initially because of what came before it.  It seemed out of place with the rest of the teaser.

Since we're not seeing the front, there could be a center hub the head is attached to. I'm also making out seams in the "ball", so maybe this little droid can change it's body shape?

If the concept art is any indication, it looks after the head isn't resting on the main body as shown in the teaser.  It's hard to tell in the concept art, but it looks like it may have a neck.

I wonder if that soccer ball droid is going to become the "new" sidekick of the new characters kind of like R2 was for the OT characters (and PT characters, I guess).  Or, could it simply be a short lived gag moment like Chewbecca scaring away the mouse droid on the Death Star?

I highly doubt that it will be a throwaway gag, as this trailer shows most major players in the movie. I would bet money that this is Daisy Ridley's droid, on some sort of mission at the station.

That's what I'm guessing since Ridley's character is shown racing towards the station the same droid is at (or so it seems).

Just watched it.  You can tell it was shot on HD cameras because there's nothing film like about the footage.  That's whats giving it the modern look.  It looks even more video then the prequels.

It's shot on 35mm film. The video compression ( especially if you watched the youtube version) is heavily compressed which has eliminated almost all of the grain. Grain is more noticeable on the video on iTunes, but still you can see that the compression is killing a lot of it.

It isn't worth using this trailer as any basis to how the film will eventually look. The colour grading will have been done specifically for the trailer and will likely end up being completely different in the finished film; chances are that the effects aren't even finalised; you're seeing it through a heavily compressed format etc etc.

 Thanks for the info!

I have to admit I was very disappointed by the teaser trailer (even without high hopes anyway). It doesn't look like the prequels, and it doesn't look like the OT either. It reminded me of the Old Republic trailer to be honest. I know it's just a teaser so hopefully it'll grow on me as new information comes out.

I thought the same thing... it's not the PT and it's not the OT... it looks more like an Abrams films than a Star Wars film, but I'm okay with that.  The teaser and it's music has grown on me already.  The only part I'm concerned about is the cliche cloaked character in the forest and that saber.

I think it's important to note that you can also hear the sound of probe droids in the opening shot when Boyega pops up.

Personally, I don't want this film to turn out to be another Sith vs Jedi.  We already got that with the PT.  I know the teaser don't display this (after all, they didn't show any Jedi), but the character in the forest is making me wonder since that guy is most likely a Sith.

I'm wondering if we'll see much at all.  Abrams did say it will be a TINY peek of what they're currently work on.  With logos and the title, there's probably going to be about a minute of footage.  However, many of the rumors say there's going to be quite a bit of footage in 88 seconds.  We'll find out soon enough.
